To all whom it may concern i Be A1t known that I, ANDREA FUMO, a
`subject of the YKing of Italy, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State Vof New York, have invented an Improvement in Therapeutic Apparatus, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to a'therapeutic apparatus, and particularly to a hydro-electro therapeutic apparatus, by the use of which the scalp, the roots of the hair, and the skin on any portion of the body may be treated, with a suitable tonic and the application o electricity, theelectricity being Yapplied by completing an electric circuit through a stream of the tonic as the same is poured onto portions of the body to be treated.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a vessel divided into compartments, in one of whichthere is placed an apparatus for generating suitable electric current, and in the other vof which is placed the tonic to be used in the treatment of the scalp, hair, and
any desired portion of the surface of the body, the parts being so connected and arranged that an electric circuit is completed through the tonic and the body of the patient as the tonic is poured on the surface to be treated, as will be hereinafter more particularly described. j
' In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation andpartial longitudinal section illustrating my improved apparatus, the parts being shown as divided for economizing space. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken approximately on line w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the apparatus.` Fig. l is an elevation showing the apparatus complete. Fig. 5 is an elevation of an attachment which may be employed when the treatmentby the apparatus is given by an operator, and Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view of the electric circuits.
Referring to the drawing, my improved therapeutic apparatus comprises a casing, made of slieetfmetal or other suitable material, indicated at 10. In a suitable position the casing is provided with a partition 11 dividing the same into a lower compartment 12 and an upper compartment 13. The walls of the upper compartment, as
illustrated,are preferably dome-shape, as
indicated at 14, in order to provide, at their extremity, a suitable nozzle by which the tonic placed in the compartment 13 may be poured from acase in the-use of the apparatus. At the lower end of the casing, Aa
suitable base 15 is provided, which may be connected to the casing by means of bayonet joints, indicated at 16, or otherwise, so that these parts may be readily connected and disconnected. Extending upwardly, and preferably placed centrally upon the base 15, is a wall 17,` conveniently made of insulating material. On one side of this wall 17 is a battery, preferably a dry battery, indicated at 18. The battery is secured in position against the wall 17 by means of suitable clamp supports 19 or otherwise. 0n the opposite side of the wall 17 is an induction coil 20, which is secured in posi-` tion against the wall by means of brackets 21, or otherwise. Connected at one end to the induction coil is a bridge 22 on which there is an adjustable vcontact 23, by means of which the coil may be regulated, is customary. One terminal of the battery 18 1 is connected by a wire 2li to one terminal of the primary of the induction coil, and the other terminal of the battery is connected to the other terminal of the primary of the induction coil by a wire 25. One terminal of the secondary of the induction coil is connected by a wire 2G to a contact 28, and
the other terminal of the secondary of the induction coil `is connected by a wire 27 to a contact 29. The contact 2S is placed on the outer" or free end of 'the Wall 17 and .is adapted, when the parts are in position, to bear against the under surface of the par.- tition 11, and the contact 29 is suitably connected--to one side of the wall 17 andis adapted, when the parts are in position, to bear against a contact plate 33, which is suitably set in and insulated from the walls i of the casing 10. On the other side ofthe base 15, I prefer to employ a switch arm 30,
together with a button 31, which are placed in the battery circuit and by which, as will be understood, this battery circuit may be opened and closed at the will of the operator.
By reference to Fig. 3, it will also be seen that an opening is provided in the base 15 for the insertion of a movable core 32, which may be adjusted to any position within the induction coil to vary and control the high tension currents set up therein when the battery circuit is closed. It will also be noticed that I may employ a contact plate 34:, secured in the base and placed in the secondary circuit of the coil, the contact plate 34 lying preferably against the upper surface of the base and having connected thereto a tube 35 which extends through the base, the purpose of which is to make connection through a suitable contact of the Wire with a hand implement 36, which may be used by an operator in treating patients Wit-h the apparatus. t will also be observed that l propose to employ an air tube 38 extending down into the compartment 13, in order that the tonic, in the use of the apparatus, may ilow freely therefrom, and furthermore, l may provide the nozzle end of the apparatus With a cap 89 to protect the nozzle 40 when the apparatus is not in use.
In the use of this apparatus, the patient may grasp the casing in one hand with the fingers lying across the contact plate 33, and after having closed the switch in the battery circuit, the casing is inverted, permitting the tonic in the compartment 13 to pass therefrom and fall upon the parts orn the body to be treated, and as will be apparent, simultaneouslji7 With this stream of tonic contacting With the body, the electric circuit will be closed through the same so that the parts are also treated electrically. The apparatus may also be used by an operator, in which case the operators hand is not brought into contact With the plate 33, but the casing is held by the operator so as to apply contact Wit-h this plate, in which instance it Will be necessary to insert the plug at the end of the Wire connected to the hand implement 36, any portion ot which, as it Will be understood7 may be grasped by the patient being treated, the aperture for the insertion of this plug being in the tube 35 connected to the plate 34e and extending through the base, as hereinbefore described.

induction coil also secured to the saidA base, electricalV connections from the terminals of the said battery to the terminals of the primary ot the induction coil, a contact plate associated with the base and adapted to bear against said transverse partition Wall, a contact plate secured in and insulated from the said casing, a contact also associated with thesaid base and adapted when the same is in its normal posit-ion to bear against the last otherwise open end of the lower compart ment, a battery secured to the said base, an induction coil also secured to the said base, electrical connections from the terminals of the said battery t-o the terminals of the primary ot the induction coil, a contact plate associated With the base and adapted to bear against said transverse partition Wall, a contact plate secured in and insulated from the said casing, a contact also associated with the said base and adapted when the same is in its normal position to bear against the last aforesaid contact plate, electrical connections from the terminals of the secondary coil to the said Contact plates,
and a contact in the circuit between the secondary of the induction coil and the said Contact plate secured in and insulated from the casing.
