v CABLE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1 1,1913.
Application filed May a, 1913. Serial No. 766,434.
ed to be employed in lumber woods for cutting wire rope used in logging, although the device is susceptible of divers uses.
It is also the object of the present invention to provide a cutter or shear of the nature indicated, which shall be compara' tively simple, durable, compact and inexpensive in construction, as Well as serviceable, convenient and ciiicient in its use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character specified wherein the cutters proper may be readily withdrawn or removed for the purpose/of sharpening or replacement, the cutters proper being so designed as to most eflectively sever or shear the wire rope or other stock, and bein capable of substitution by various pairs 0' cutters for cutting various sizes or diameters of rope or the like.
With the foregoing general objects outlined and with other objects in view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein t Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided the base 1 having the upstanding guide or socket 2. The base and the guide or socket are preferably cast integral from suitable metal, which is capable of withstanding the jars and strains to which it is subjected, the guideway or socket proper 3 opening upwardly. The guide or socket 2." is rectangular in cross-section, and 1s provided with the upwardly opening recesses 4 in its sides. I a
A pair of cutters or blades 5 and 6 are disposed or fitted snugly, but loosely, within the guide or socket 2, the cutters or blades overlapplng each other. The cutter or blade 5 is provided with the upwardly opening notch or recess 7 terminating below the top of the socket, the edges of the notch being beveled from end to end so as to provide a sharp cutting edge, the dimensions of the recess 7 being smaller than that of the corresponding recess 4:. The cutter or blade 5 seats upon the base. The cutter or blade 6 is provided with the downwardly opening notch or recess 8 similar to the recess 7 of the blade 5, the notches or recesses 7 and 8 complementing each other and being of such proportions as to snugly receive the wire rope or stock therein when the cutter or blade 6 is raised. The cutter or blade 6 is also provided with an upstanding extension or lug 9 at its upper end upon which is adapted to be impinged the head of a sledge, mallet, or other implement.
The cutters or blades are preferably constructed of steel or other hard metal, and the notches or recesses 7 and 8 are preferably U- shaped so as to properly receive the rope or stock, the recesses-4 in the sides of the socket complementing and being considerably larger in proportions than the said notches and 8.
A set or jam screw 10 is threaded through one side of the socket 2 and is adapted to contact with the outer face of one of, the
cutters or blades, in this case the cutter or blade 5, so as to clam the blades or cutters tightly within the guide or socket, when the device is not in use.
' In use, the screw 10 having been loosened, the cutters or blades are disposed loosely within the guide or socket, the cutter or blade 6 being readily withdrawn in order to permit thewire rope or other stock to be dropped into the notch or recess 7 of the cutter 5, it being noted that the recesses 4 of the guide will accommodate the rope or stock properly. The cutter 6 may then be inserted into the guide, so as to overlap the cutter 5, the wire rope or stock being seated within the complementing notches 7 and S of the cutters so that the cutting edges will entirely embrace the stock to be cut. Then by strlking the upper end or lug 9 of the cutter 6, with sufficient impulse ormomentum, the cutter 6 may be driven downwardly shearing edges of the blades or cutters com-- v pletelyembrace the wire rope or other stock so as to prevent the rope or stock from springing or buckling when the cutter 6 is I driven downwardly.
Various sets or pairs of cutters may be provided, the several pairs being readily interchangeable, it beingnoted that the cutters 5 and 6 may be readily withdrawn for purpose of sharpening or replacement.
When the device is not in use, the set screw 10 may be tightened in order to clamp the cutters in position, so that they may not be lost.
The base 1 may be secured in position in any manner, and to this end, the corners may be provided with the depending-spurs or teeth 11 to engage any suitable wooden object upon which the base is set.
If desired, a pair of jam screws 10 may be provided for preventing the blades from jumping up when in use.
What is claimed as new is A cuttin device embodying a base having an upstan ing socket of rectangular cross section, and a pair of overlapping cutter blades fitting snugly in the socket, one cutter blade seating on the base and having an upper U-shaped notch terminating below the top ofthe socket, the other cutter blade having a lower U-shaped notch complementing the aforesaid notch and having an upper portion to" receive the blow of a suitable implement, the sides of the socket having upwardly opening recesses, complementing and larger in proportions than the said notches.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. GlLCI-IRIST.
