To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER M. EDWARDS,
of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful SaslrI-Iolder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of a window sash holder which is particularly simple in construction and highly eflicient and durable in use; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, parts being removed, of a window structure provided with one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of my sash holder, contiguous parts of the window sash being shown. Fig. 3 is a plan of parts seen in Fig. 2, the contiguous portion of the window frame being also shown in section.
1 is the window frame; 2 is the window sash slidable vertically in ways or grooves as 3 in the frame.
4 is a fixed sash supported by the frame.
5 is a spring rollerconnected by means of a cord or chain 6 to the window sash 2, the cord or chain 6 passing around pulleys 7 located on the upper rail of the window sash 2 near opposite edges of the window sash 2.
8 are handles by which the window sash may be raised or lowered, and 9 are hand operated latches located contiguous tothe handles 8 and coacting with suitable holding means as racks located in the ways or grooves 3 for holding the window sash in its closed position or at various elevations.
There is one sash holder located near each side edge of the sash 2. Each sash holder comprises a spring pressed rock arm for engaging one of the walls of the ways or grooves 3.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention each sash holder comprises a support or base, a rock shaft journaled in the base and carrying a rock arm having means for coacting with one of the walls of the Specification of Letters PH'EGIIGL Patented- NEOV. 11,1913. 10 is the base which includes a plate 11 adapted to be secured to the upper edge of the top rail ofthe window sash, and a side plate adapted to be secured to one of the faces of the window sash, such support or base 10 also including upwardly extending bearings 12 spaced apart.
13 is a rock shaft journaled in the bearings 12 of the base or support 10, the rock shaft projecting beyond one of the bearings and the projecting portion extending into the contiguous groove3; 15 is the rock arm provided on the projecting portion of the shaft, said rock arm being formed with a lengthwise slot in which is located an antifriction member as a roller 16 for bearing against one of the walls of the groove or way 3. The rock arm 15 is formed with a hub or collar 17 abutting against the outer face of the contiguous bearing 12, and a collar 18 is mounted on the rock shaft between the bearings 12 and engages the other side of said contiguous bearing. Hence the rock shaft is held from endwise movement by the hub 17 and collar 18.
19 is the spring acting on the rock shaft, the spring being coiled about the rock shaft 13 between the bearings 12 and being connected at one end to the collar 18 and having its other end bearing against the base plate 10.
In operation the springs 19 tend to move the rock arms of the sash holders and hence hold the rollers 16 against walls of the ways or grooves 3.
What I claim is:
A windowsash holder comprising asupport adapted to be secured to the window sash and having bearings spaced apart, a rock shaft journaled in the bearings and projecting beyond one of the bearings, the projecting portion thereof being provided with a rock arm having means for coacting with the frame for the window sash, the
rock arm having a collar associated therewith for engaging the outer face of the contlg'uous bearing, a collar on the rock shaft arranged to engage the inner face of the eonnectedat one end to the last-mentioned collar and bearing at its other end against same bearing, and a spring coiled about the testing Witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county rock shaft between the bearings and being of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 10 11th day of July 1912.
