Description

Unies STATES ATENT Prien.
JAMES S. CASEY, OF VOLUNTOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SADDLES FOR SPINNINGVMACHINES,&C.
Specificationforming part ofLetters Patent No. 107,758, dated September 27, 1.870.
and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a side view of my saddle.
My invention has relation to an improvement in the saddles of spinning-machines; and` itconsists in constructing the saddle with a central adjustable spring, designed to vary the pressure on the middle 'roll at will, or to remove it altogether therefrom, according to the nature of the stock. y If it be long-staple cotton, the long saddle is formed by raising the spring off the middle roll. If short staple, the spring is"V depressed and made to bear on the middle roll.
The letter A of the drawing represents the body of my saddle, made of wood or other suitable material. One end of the saddle is designed to rest on the forward roller and the other on the rear one. The under side of the saddle, between the bearings for these two rollers, is hollowed out or arched to provide room for the adjustment of the spring.
B designates a spring attached to-one end of the saddle,on the under side thereof. This spring is curved somewhat at its forward end to suit the curvature ofthe middle roller, np-
on which it is designed to rest when the sadu dle is used in spinning cotton of short staple.
C represents a set screw, which passes through the body of the saddle downward by impinging against the spring B, and serving to regulate its adjustment, and thereby the pressure on the middle roll.
The advantages of my invention are readily l apparent. The same saddle may be used in spinning short-staple cotton which is employed with long staple. For this purpose it is readily changed from a long to a double saddle, and the weight may be distributed between the middle and end rolls, as necessity may require.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl An adjustable saddle for spinning-machines,
lprovided with a spring and set-screws or their equivalents to vary the pressure on the middle roll, or relieve it entirely therefrom, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J. S. CASEY.
