To all 'whom 2f may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN D. BANGs, a Citizen 'of t-he United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukeetand State of VVisconsin, haye invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engine Starters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. i
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical'and positively actuated automatic starter for multiple cylinder gas engines, its construction and arrangement being such that an auxiliary charge of carbureted air is maintained under valve-con-v trol,'having actuating mechanism in timed relationy with motion of the engine, whereby said charge is admitted to that engine cylinder the piston of which is` in a position just past its highest compression point, and is manner to impart initial motion to the engine.
lilith the above object in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities: of construction and combination of parts as fully setforth hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

The reservoir is also connected by a pipe or duct 2i to the chamber 7 of the valve-casing 6, the said pipe or ductfbeing also provided'with a check-valve 25 shown.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is the chamber 7 for each engine cylinder, it being understood that the number of cylinders and valve-controlled ports 'are immaterial to the operation of the starter and that the valve-casing convenient point relative to the engine as well as the reservoir 18. Thecontrolling valves 23 and 26 of the ducts 24: and 21,
however, should be so placed, if the envine'- is used in connection with a self-prope led vehicle, that theyare accessible to the operator. It should also be understood that the engine-is equipped with any standard type of spark ignition mechanism, which mechanism forms no part of my invention.
In the operation of my starting apparatus,
should the engine be in motion and the operator desire to set the starter, the cock 23 would be opened, this and contiinlling cock`26 as:

should be understood, is at this time also closed and all three of the engine cylinders will now be operating as under Ordinary conditions. v Should the engine come to rest and the operator desire to start the same, controlling cock 26 would be opened, thus permitting a vcharge of compressed carbureted air from the reservoir to till chamber 7 'of the vali/erasing. A'Owing tothe fact that the arbor cams are so disposed 'about said arbor that one of the valves 9 is at all times open, this charge of carbnreted air would ind its way through the open port 8, and, as shown in the diagram, the carbureted air in this linstance would pass from the open portto the rst cylinder 1b and, being under compression, the charge would be exploded by closing the spark circuit, not shown, ,which circuit isy closed just after a full charge has passed the check valve 17, whereby back firing into that por-1I l tion of the charge remaining in the pipe 16 and valve casing is avoided. Owing to the timed relation between the cam-carrying arbor 12 and the crank-shaft, when any one of the ports 8 are opened, the piston of the engine cylinder to which it is connected is just past its highest point and hence when the explosionl takes place the engine isA copies of this patent may be on: i;
