FIG. 2.
JAMES HENRY JERRIM,OF FINSTALL, BROMSGROVE, ENGLAND.
rnsrnivnn.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1913.
Application filed January 15, 1913. Serial No. 742,207.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES HENRY JER- RIM, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Clovelly House, Finstall, Broinsgrcve, in the county of lVorcester, England, merchant, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fasteners, electric cable fasteners and the like, and devices of a similar nature, constructed of coiled wire, the legs or shanks being formed integral with the head by bending the ends of the coiled wire downwardly with respect to the coil.
.ln the drawings showing my invention and forming a part of this specificaticn:- Figure l is a side view of a wire staple constructed according to my invention. Fig. a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In my invention I prefer to form the staple with two legs, one long and one short, but in any case the head is always supported by a member which is relatively narrow w ith respect to the head. 1 form the head so that it is substantially centrally located over the to which driving pressure is applied and also extends over the narrow member so that it supports this connecting part thereby preventing the rising of the supporting member or its becoming otherwise distorted or broken when the staple is being driven. in my invention 1: form the head and legs of a single piece of wire, the head being constructed of a spiral coil. of wire.
Referring to the drawings: In the wire staple shown in the drawing I einploy'a single length of wire to form the leg --a-, head -Z) and short leg c--. In forming this type of staple the wire at the top of the leg a. is closely wound spirally, each turn fitting tightly against the next. lVhen a head of the desired size is produced by coiling, the wire is then carried under the coiled head as shown in Fig. 4- and then bent down to form the leg 0. It to be particularly noted that in forming the outer leg or shank of the staple, instead of bending the eXtre1n ity of the wire straight down parallel to the inner leg as has heretofor been customstaples, carpet ary in forming this class of staples, I first bend it underneath the coil or head itself and then bend it down when the opposite side of the coil is reached so that its outer leg or shank is supported in the process of driving by means of the portion at thereof which lies under the coiled head. After the spiral forming the head has been coiled the head is preferably given a blow in a stamp or press, suited for the purpose, to set all the coils in the same plane so that a regular and rigid head is the result. The legs or shanks may then be sharpened to a suitable point.
It is my intention that the legs may be of any length desired without in any way departing from the scope and spirit of my invention.
What I claim by Letters Patent of the United States is: y
1. A staple 0r fastener formed of a single length of wire, by bending a portion of the wire at right angles to itself to form a leg and forming a spirally coiled head at right angles to the said leg and having the coils all in the same plane, and a second shank or leg formed by bending the wire from the periphery of the spiral back underneath the said spiral to the other side of the periphery, thence bending it downward at right angles to itself and the plane of the spiral, and parallel to the lirstnncntioned leg or shank.
2. A staple or fastener formed of a single length of wire, by bending a portion of the wire at right angles to itself to form a leg, and then forming a spirally coiled head at right angles to the said leg and having the coils all in the same plane, and a support for the spiral formed by bending the wire from the periphery of the spiral back underneath the said spiral to the other side of the periphery.
lfn testimony whereof, l, the said Janus l-lnmir Jnuniir, have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this third 'day of January 1918.
