W. J. PRESLEY. PRIMER FOR INTERNAL GOMBUSTION ENGINES.
APPLIOATIO N FILED JAN.13. 1913.

INVEITOII l/Uflham Jl rasla I TTOIMEI' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
wittmn J. PRESLEY, or GRAND HAVEN, momma. PRIMER r03. IrtrnnnAr-oomrusiton enemas.
Specification or Letters i'ateiit.
Patented Oct. 28, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM J .Pntistinr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Haven, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Primers for Internal-Combustion Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to primers for internal combustion engines, and its object is to provide improved means for injecting a priming charge of highly volatile fluid into the engine, to assist in starting the same.
My present invention is an improvement on the device shown in Patent 411,044,081 issued to me November 12, 1912, in which the trip for releasing the pump plunger 15 shown connected to the switch for operating the spark circuits and so arranged that the pump is permitted to operate and inject the priming charge simultaneously with the turning on of the spark circuit. I have found it preferable to arrange the device so that the priming charge could be injected previous to turning on the spark, and thus give it. more time to enter the cylinders of the engine.
My present invention comprises improved mechanism for releasing the pump plunger, automatically operated whenever the communication between the pump and the engine is established, and it consists essentiallv of a lever connected to the latch which holds the pump plunger raised and the operating springs under tension; a stop cock betwen the pump and the engine to closethe communicating passage therebetween,
and a cam or projection on the stop cock adapted to engage said lever and move the same to release the latch whenever the stop cock is turned to open position, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 a detail of a portion of the same shown in elevation; Fig. 4a detail in horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 a detail in vertical section through the valves, to conthe priming fluid provided at the top with a stop cock 2 and funnel 3- for filling the same.
4 represents the pump barrel communicating at the bottom with the tank 1 by means of a conduit 5 in which is a stop cock 6 provided with an operating handle 7 to open and close the same. 8 is another stop cock below the pump to close the passage 10 communicating with the base 9 of the pump and with the engine, preferably with the intake manifold of the same.
11 is the pump plunger provided with a suitable knob or handle 12 at the top for manually raising the same; the upper end of this plunger is provided with a cross bar 13 attached thereto and contractile springs 25 and 26 to force the pump plunger downward and thus inject the fluid into the engine. The spring 25 at the lower end is attached to the conduit 5 and at the upper end to the bar 13. The spring 26 at the lower end is attached to an arm 24 projecting from the base of the pump, and at the upper end to a rod 14 vertically slidable in a guide 15 and attached at its upper end to the cross bar 13. The lower end of the rod 14 is' enlarged and provided with a circumterential groove 16 engaged by a pivoted latch 17 mounted on an arm 18 projecting from the pump barrel, and the latch is yieldably engaged with the groove 16 by a spring 19 mounted on the arm. To release the latch a lever 20 is pivoted at the middle to the pump barrel and connected at its upper end by a rod 21 to the movable end of the latch and engaged at its lower end by a cam or projection 22 on the plug of the stopcock 8 and so adjusted that when the stop cock is turned to open position the said cam will engage and move the lever and release the latch, and when the stop cock is closed the said projection will be moved away from the lever and permit the latch to engage the groove 16. i
The operation of the device is as follows: The pump plunger is normally in the lowered position and both cocks 6 and 8 are closed. Bv opening the cock 6 and manually raising the plunger until the latch 17 engages the groove 16 the springs 25 and 26 will be held under tension with the plunger in elevated position and the pump barrel will be filled with priming fluid. By closing the cock 6 and opening the cock 8, the return of the fluid to the tank 1 is prevented and a passage opened for the same to the engine and as the cock 8 is opened the projection 22 engages the lever 20 and withdraws the latch 17 from the groove 16. The springs 25 and 26 now suddenly depress the plunger thus forcing the fluid in the pump barrel into the engine, and suitably priming the same for starting in any convenient manner.
What I claimis:
1. An engine primer, comprising a reservoir, a pump communicating with the reservoir and having a spring actuated plunger, a, latch to hold the plunger from operating, a stop cock in the outlet of the pump, and means for disengaging the latch operated by turning the stop cock to open position;
2. An engine primer, comprising a reservoir, a pump communicating with said reservoir, a spring actuated plunger in said pump, a rod outside the pump attached to the said plunger and moving therewith, a latch adapted to engage said rod to hold the plunger.raised against the tension of its spring, a stop cock in the outlet of the pump, andmeans for disengaging the latch from the rod operated by turning said stop cock to open position.
3. An engine primer, comprising a reservoir, a pump communicating with the reservoir, a stop cock in the outlet of the pump, a spring actuated plunger to the pump, springs connected to the plunger to operate the same, a rod attached to the plunger and having a groove'therein, a latch to engage the groove and hold the rod, a lever pivoted at the middle and connected at one end to the latchto remove the same from the groove, a projection on the stop cock to engage the lever and operate the same when the said cock is turned to open position.
4. An engine primer, comprising a reservoir, a pump barrel, a conduit connecting the lower end of the barrel and the reservoir, a stop cock in the conduit, a lower extension to the pump having a conduit to communicate with the engine, a stop cock in the base of the pump, a cam on said stop cook,- a plunger reciprocable in the pump barrel, a spring connected to the plunger and conduit, a rod connected to the plunger at one end and having an enlargement at the other end provided with agroove, a spring connected to the rod, a latch to enga e the groove and hold the plunger with rawn from the pump barrel, a lever pivoted near the middle, a rod connecting one end of the lever to the latch and the other end of the lever engaged by the cam to release the latch from the groove whenever the cock is turned to open position.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
