This invention relates to gas burning devices wherein a pilot light is'e nployed'in conjunction with the main gas supply, and in the present form of embodiment there of is particularly adapted for use in corn. noction with water heaters. In the forms of devices of this class now in use it has been found that the pilot light is sometimes extinguished and when the main gas supply is turned on, either manually or by auto matic means, no ignition thereof occurs withint-he heater and, when an effort is made to ignite either the pilot or the main volume of escaped gas within the casing of the heater andto the continued escape thereof from the burners, and it is to avoid any possibility of such explosion that my invention was conceived.
The object of my invention is to provide a barrier for the pilot light, such as a door or equivalent, which is in operative connection with a valve in the main gas supply pipe in such manner that when the barrier is removed to ignite the pilot, in the event of its having been extinguished, the main gas supply to the burners is shut oh, the gas which had been'permitted to escape from the burners passing upwardly and outwardly through the flue aided by the draft occasioned by the opening of the door, when a door is employed as the barrier, and by the time a match is lighted and inserted into the heater no gas remains therein, or very little, and the flow. of gas to the burners having been stopped, no explosion occurs and the pilot may be lighted with perfect safetyand, when the door 1s again closed, the safety or emergency valve referred to'again permits the passage of gas to the main burners where it is ignited 'by the pilot.

orm to give a large heating surface, these pipes not being shown, however, as they form no part of this invention and, from the foregoing, it will be seen that a constant flow of gas is permitted to the burners when the door 0 is closed and the valve a open, but when the door 0 is opened the supply of gas to the burners is stopped and the pilot maybe lighted without fear of explosion and, while I have shown my invention adapted for use in connection with water heaters, it will be evident that it is adapted for any gas burning device wherein a constantly burning pilot light is employed and wherein explosions are possible due to escaped or escaping gas, and it will also be evident that many changes in and modifications of the details of construction shown and described may be made to adapt my invention either to water heaters or other uses and still be within the spirit of my invention and without sacrificing the advantages thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In a gas burning device, a casing provided with a door, main burners therein, a
gas supply pipe for said burners, a valve in said pipe, a pilot fixed in said casing and in communication with said pipe between said valve and the source of supply whereby a constant gas supply results to said pilot, and means connected with said door and valve for closing the valve upon opening the door and thus preventing the supply of gas to said main burners when thedoor is opened.
2. In a water heater, the combination of a combustion chamber, a door therefor, a burner within the combustion chamber, a fuel supply pipe leading to the burner, a valve for said supply pipe, a pilot normally in cooperative relation with the burner and in constant communication with a source of gas supply, and means actuated by the door for closing the valve on the opening of the door to cut oil the gas supply to the burner.
3. In a-heater, the combination of a combustion chamber, a door therefor, a main burner and a pilot burner within said chamber, means for supplying fuel to said burners, a valve controlling the supply of fuel to said main burner independently of the supply of fuel to said pilot burner and means actuated by the movement of the door for closing the valve upon opening the door and 7 cutting off the su ply of gas to the main burner without a to the pilot burner.

In a heater, a combustion chamb r, a door therefor, a main burnerand a gilot burner in said chamber, means for supplying ectmg the supply of gas fuel to said burners, a main valve for controlling the supply of fuel to said main burner, a; valve for controlling the supply of fuel to said pilot burner independently of the supply of fuel to said main burner and means of connection between said door and said main valve for operating said main valve when said door is open without affecting the valve controlling the supply of fuel to said pilot burner.
5. In a heater, :1 combustion-chamber, a main burner in said chamber, a fuel supply pipe leading thereto, a main valve in the supply pipe to the main burner, a door for said chamber, hinges for said door independent of said valve, means of connection between said door and said valve for closing said valve upon opening said door and open ing said valve upon closing said door and means for igniting the fuel from said main burner withinsaid chamber when the door is closed.

In a heater, a combustion chamber, a main burner insaid chamber, a supply pipe leading thereto, a main valve in the supply pipe to the main burner, a door for said chamber, hinges for said door substantially in line with but independent. of said valve, an arm for. transmitting motion from said door to said valve to close said valve when said door is opened and adjustable means for connecting one end of said arm to one of said elements. i i
