To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES 11.31011, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city 01" Noolrich, county of Clinton, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Attachment for Lip-Gontacts of Drinking Vessels, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to devise a novel fastening device whereby a piece of material of any desired nature may be retained in position with respect to the container with which it is employed so that such piece of material may readily be replaced, thereby e.- abling one to maintain the drinking vessel li. a sanitary condition at all times.

It further consists of a novel construction of an attachment which may be secured with respect to any desired type of glass, tumbler or other drinking vessel, in order to hold a sanitary piece of paper or other ma terial in a position to prevent the lips of the user coming in contact with the glass or the container which is being used.

It further consists of a novel construction of an attachmentwhich is removably connected with the glass or other container and which engages with the means employed for maintaining the glassor the container in a sanitary condition in such a manner that the lip contacting portion of the glass will be covered by such means.

It further consists of a novel construction of a cli to which is adjustably connected means or securing a piece of material at the u per edge of a container.

It turther consists of other novel features of construction, all as will. be hereinafter more fully set forth.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings preferred embodiments which are at present )retcrred by me, since the same hav been tound in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and or 'anized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a drinking vessel having an attachment embodying my invention in assembled position with respect thereto. Fig. 2 represents a sectional elevation of a portion of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a sectional elevation of a portion of Fig. 1. Fig. at represents a sectional elevation of my novel attachment. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 rep-resent perspective views of other embodiments of my invention. Fig. 8 represents a perspective view of another embodiment of my invention. Fig. 9 represents a perspective view of another embodiment of my invention with a portion of a glass.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings :1 designates a container or drinking vessel of any desired or conventional type andwhich for purposes of illustration I have shown as consisting of an ordinary glass.

'Iteferring first to the embodiments seen in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, 2 designates the body portion of my novel attachment to which are preferably secured the arms 3 which latter are formed of resilient or elastic material and have a portion deflected upon itself as is indicated at l, the strip of material being then bent upon itself 1n a reverse direction. as is indicated at 5, the end of the arm 3 exterior of the body por tion 2 is curved or outwardly deflected as is indicated at (l in order that the attachment may be readily removed from the containcr 1 when desired. Any desired number of these arms may be employed and in the present instance I have shown the body portion 2 as provided with two of such arms, which latter may be oonnectcd'with or separate from the body portion as desired. The body portion 2 is provided at one end with a tube or sleeve 7 having a slot 8 in the side thereof. \Vithin this tube is mounted a rod 9 having a clasp or grasping portion 10 connected therewith and extending to the slot 8. l1 designates a spring clip which in this embodiment of my invention consists of a Single piece of material, the ends of which are connected with the rod 9, it being noted that the spring members of the clip 11 extend downwardly from the upper end of the rod 9, then laterally and then upwardly in order to form a U-shaped portion 12. 13 designates a piece or strip of sanitary material such as for example paper, which is, placed over the edge oi the container and then the rod 9 is moved downwardly so that the clip 11 will engage the strip 13 both interiorly and exteriorly of the container, as will be clearly understood-by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. When it is desired to place a new piece of sanitary material to cover the lip contactirg portion of the container it is simply necessary to move the rod 9 upwardly and remove the piece vof unsanitary material 13 which has been used and replace the same with a-new piece of sanitary material.

The embodiment seen in Fig. 5 illustrates another form of my invention which may be advantageously employed and readily removed from the container in conjunction with which it is employed. In this embodiment 14 designates a U-shaped body portion, the sides of which are resilient in order that the same may be readily at tached'to the upper portion of a drinkin vesseL. This body portion 14; has connecte therewith a plate 15 provided with ears 16 in which is pivoted an operating handle 17 to which latter are connected the wires 18 and 19 respectively which are curved or bowed intermediate their ends and their free ends are bent into engagement with each other as indicated at 20. It will be seen in this embodiment of my invention that when the device is in assembled position that in order to remove a piece of unsanitary materal, it is simply necessary to actuate the handle 17 to cause the spring arms 18 and 19 to move upwardly out of engagement with the unsanitary piece of material which has already been used.

vIn the embodiment seen in Fig. 6, the grasping handle consists of a piece of wire 21 which is twisted at 22, and has the free ends 23 and 24 telescoping in the U-shaped clip 25, so that this type of clip may be employed in conjunction with glasses 'or containers of different dimensions.

In the embodiment seen in Fig. 7, the body portion consists of a knob or handle '26 to which is connected the ueshaped spring clip 27. I 1 v It will be seen that in all the embodiments of m invention I employ a U-shaped clip, the, si es of which are downwardly deflected insuch a manner that thesanitary material employed will be engaged by the lips of the user so that the lips-of the user will not'come in contact with either the clip itself or the container, and the embodiments seen in Figs. 6 and 7 are specially designed to be carried inthe pocket of the user.

The strip of sanitary material is clamped both interiorly of and exteriorly of the drinking vessel so that there is no liability of-leakag'e around such material during the act of drinking.

eferring now to the embodiment seen in Fig. 8 I have shown a sanitary piece of mag terial 28 having embedded therein a wire 29 preferably annealed to assist in holding the lip-contact surface of the material to the lipsurface of the drinking vessel. This embodiment may be readily carriedin an en-' velop or in the pocket 'ofthe user and readily formed over the edge of a vessel of any size, the wire or other materialemployed serving to retain the sanitary material in place.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a sanitary attachment for lip-contacts of drinkin vessels, which :embodies the features o advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of theinvention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described preferred embodiments thereof which have beenfound in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to] be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of theinv'ention or sacrificing any of its advantages. Having thus described myfinvention, what I clalm as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a v l. Ina device of the character stated, a body portion, means for securing said body ortion in position, arod movably carried by said body portion, and a loopshaped clip connected with said rod.

5. In a device of the character stated, a bodyportion having an aperture therein, a rod movable in said aperture, and a loopshaped clip connected with said rod.

6. In a device of the character stated. a body portion, a rod adjustably carried by said body portion, and a loop-shaped clip having its ends connected With said rod and the sides of said loop downwardly curved, whereby one side of the loop Will engage the inner periphery of a vessel and the other side of said loop the outer peripheigv of the vessel to clamp a piece of material thereto.

7. In a device of the character stated, a body portion having a sleeve connected. therewith and provided with a slot, a rod mounted in said sleeve and provided with a grasping portion extending through said slot, and a loop-shaped clip connected with said rod.

8. In a device of the character stated, a body portion, aloop-shaped clip having its ends connected with said body portion and having the outer end of the loop adapted to fit over and engage sides of said loop being adapted to engage the inner and outer peripheries of the vessel or sanitary material carried thereby.
