JASPER BAILEY THOEN, OF GILLINGI-IAM, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR CHECKING AND RECORDING RECEIPTS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1913.
Application filed June 28, 1913. Serial No. 776,249.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, JASPER BAILEY THORN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Gillingham, county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Checking and Recording Receipts and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that type of receipt checking and recording apparatus in which a receipt can be torn ofi' from a strip of paper and given to the purchaser while at the same time a duplicate record is made on another strip within the apparatus and which can only be got at by certain accredited persons. In this connection it has been proposed to employ two strips of paper, one a receipt strip and the other the record strip, and to automatically move such strips together in the required direction, the back of the receipt strip being coated or covered with a suitable transfer medium to enable a duplicate record to be made upon the record strip. Further, it is known that it has been proposed to employ a roll consisting of two paper strips and to feed such strips in the same direction on to a platform or table located below an opening in the casing, the lower of the strips passing beneath a strip or sheet of carbon paper so that a duplicate of the receipt written on the upper strip is obtained; the strips are then moved forward so as to carry the receipted portion of the upper strip out of the casing to be torn off and given to the purchaser while the duplicate or record is stored upon a roller located within the casing.
The present invention is described and shown in the accompanying drawings as applied to two strips of paper, the outer one of said papers being backed or coated with a transfer medium.
According to the present invention, the apparatus consists essentially of a cylindrical receptacle formed by two cases one of which is rotatable within the other in such manner that its rotation in one direction carries the receipt strip and record strip away from the writing position to the tear-off position for the receipt strip and at the same time winding up the record strip, while the rotation of the case in'the other direction brings a fresh portion of the receipt strip and record strip opposite the writing position.
In the drawings: Figures 1 and 2 are diagrammatic sectional views, cover removed and casing in section, Fig. 1 being the writing position and Fig. 2 the delivery position of the ticket for the purchaser. Fig. 3 is a side view of the inner case with paper in the writing position. Figs. 4 and 5 are exterior views seen from opposite dlrections, showing the writing and deliv ery openings in the outer case.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a is the outer cylindrical case, box or frame having a side cover G, exposed through the broken .away portions of said figures, and b is an inner cylindrical carrier rotatably mounted within said outer cylindrical case a. also having the side cover a. On this carrier Z) are mounted upon the spindles o and d the reels 6 and f, said reel 6 being the supply reel for the double strip of paper 9 and reel f the storing reel for the record strip. The two strips g, g of paper are led through an opening it in the side of the cylindrical. carrier 6 and thence over a table portion 2' past the writing opening 7'Figs. 1, 2 and 5-in case a. The strips then pass through opening 76 in the side of the carrier 1; and the strip 9 (the recording strip) led to the storing reel The other strip 9 (the receiving strip) is passed through frictional rollers m and n which effect a grip upon said strip g, the two paper strips passing between the walls of the casings a and b, said casing 6 being as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 spaced from the cylindrical case a as at 6* for that purpose. Roller m is geared to roller f by gears 0, p, g, r, 8, gear r being loosely mounted on the spindle 23 carried by and fixed to the base of case a but capable of being connected to said spindle t by ratchet wheel a and pawl '0 carried by said gear r, said wheel a being secured to said spindle. w is a gong rung on the comple tion of an operation by hammer as, its beveled projecting trigger tip 3/ engaging stop 2 fixed on the outer case a, and Z), 2) are studs carried by the cylindrical carrier Z) to engage with and pass through holes in the outer cover a. The hammer w is pivotally mounted and is yieldingly held normally adjacent the gong by a spring 00 interposed between said hammer and a fixed abutment A purchase having been made, the assistant writes the amount on the strip 9 showing at opening and by reason of the table or platform 2: and themediiim ofthe strip g makes a duplicate impression on the strip 9 He then turns the cover a whichis loosely mounted on spindle t and case it and connected tothe cylindrical earner Z2" in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, bringing case 5 into the position shown in Fig; 2', causing the reel f to rotated by reason of gear r being locked to spindle t and thus draw in the recording strip'gr and atthe same time as this operation takes. place roller m through gear 0, p, will have been rotatedfdrawing forward the paper strip so that said strip yvill protrude through opening a +FigsL2 and 3"the strip being torn ofi' against the edge (i or said opening m The inovement of the carrier?) in the direction oithe arrow in Fig. 1 is limited by thestop' a on the outer casing a striking against the ends 6 and b or the slot the said carrier Z), as indicaged by dotte ,1i s itrigs-1 and 2.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesis Y LA receipt check and recording apparatus in iudin in c'oi'nbinatioma pair of relatively rotatable aging member nested one within'the erhe1-' ,a u p1 reel carried the inner one of 'saidmember's and itself carrying a pair of paper strips, astoring reel adapted't'o wind'thereon one of the strips, gearing operated by the relative rotation ef said members and geared with the storing reel, andffeeding means for the two strips also operated from the by the relative rotation' of said members.
