To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CONRAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding "Writing-Tablets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in manifolding writing tablets.
One object of the invention is to provide a writing tablet having arranged therein,
means whereby checks may be made out in triplicate, one copy of which is retained in the holder as a permanent record.
Another object is to provide a writing tablet of this character having a main copy manifolding mechanism whereby triplicate copies of original checks may be made out and having means whereby additional checks may be made out in triplicate for orders given subsequent to the making out of the original check.
Another object is to provide a manifolding writing tablet which may be constructed in small compact form adapted to be readily carried in the pocket.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the casing of my improved tablet of rectangular oblong form and of suitable size and depth to receive the paper holding and operating mechanism. The casing 1 is divided transversely by partitions 2 and 3 into compartments 4, 5 and 6. Secured to one side of the compartment 4 is a shaft bearing strip 7 having formed therein a series of notches 8, the outer ends of which open through the outer edge of the strip, while the closed inner ends of the notches form bearings for the journals formed on one end of the paper holding shafts hereinafter described. In the opposite side of the casing 1 and in line with the bearings in the inner ends of the notches 8 are formed inwardly extending circular depressions 9 in the centers of which are formed bearing apertures 10, adapted to receive the journals on the opposite ends of the paper supporting shafts.
To theside of the casing at one end of the compartment 6 is secured a strip 11 in which is formed a bearing notch 12 corresponding to the notches 8 in the side of the compartment 4: and in the side forming the opposite end of the compartment 6 is formed a depression 13 and a bearing aperture 14 corresponding'to the depression and bearing apertures 9 and 10 in the side of the compartment 1.
In the outer bearing notch 8 and aperture 9 is journaled the shaft 15 of an outer roll 16 of paper, while in the intermediate and inner bearing notches and apertures 8 and 9 are journaled the shafts l7 and 18 of paper rolls 19 and 20. The paper from the roll 20 is adapted to form the triplicate checks while the paper from the rolls 19 and 16 form respectively the duplicate and original checks. Fixed on one end of each of the shafts 15, 17 and 18 are friction gears 21 having rims 22 formed of rubber or similar material whereby a close frictional contact is produced between the gears as shown. By thus gearing the shafts of the roll to gether the latter turn in unison which makes it impossible to draw the paper ofi' any one of the rolls without turning, and unwinding the paper from, the adjoining roll. In thus arranging the rolls it is necessary to unwind the paper from the intermediateroll'from below or in a direction opposite to that from which it is unwound from the outer rolls for the reason that by gearing the rolls together the intermediate roll is revolved in an opposite direction to the outer rolls.
Arranged over the compartment 5 is a paper supporting plate 23 having revolubly mounted on its outer end a small paper guiding roller 240 over which the paper from the rolls 16 and 19 and 20 passes when drawn across the plate 23. The ends of the paper from the rolls 16 and 19 after being thus drawn over the plate 23 pass through and are adapted to be drawn from the inner end of the casing. The paper from the roll 20 is lowermost in position over the plate 23 and the end of this paper is secured to and is adapted to be wound upon the record shaft 24: arranged in the compartment 6 of the body and jo-urnaled in the bearing notch 12 in the strip 11. and in the bearing aperture lt in the side of the casing forming the opposite end of the compartment as shown. The shaft 24 is preferably split from one end to a point near the opposite end to form two spring members between which is engaged and fastened the end of the paper strip from the roll 20, said end being securely gripped or clamped between the members of the split shaft by a pinion 25 which is slidably engaged with one end of the shaft as shown and is adapted to be removed at any time to permit the disengagement of the end of the paper from the shaft or the clamping thereto of the end of a new strip of paper.
The shaft 24 is automatically revolved to wind the strip of paper thereon by means of a spring actuated gear 26 which is revolubly mounted on a short stub shaft 260 secured to the side of the casing forming one end of the compartment 6, said gear, when thus arranged Ineshing with the pinion 25, thus providing means for automatically rotating the shaft 24 in the proper direction for winding the paper thereon from roll 20. When the paper has been unwound from roll 20 and upon the shaft 2 1, and it is desired to remove this paper from the holder, the: outer end of the paper is grasped and drawn from the holder, thus rotating the shaft 24: in a reverse direction, which operation will, through the pinion 25 rotate the gear 26 in the opposite direction, thereby re-winding the spring secured thereto, thus storing the spring power for again rotating the shaft 2a to wind thereon another record holding strip of paper. In this manner additional rolls of paper to receive the permanent record of the checks made out in the holder may be readily placed and operatively arranged in the holder. In order to prevent the spring 27 from unwinding after being wound up by the removal of the finished roll of paper containing the record of the checks from the shaft 24, while the end of a new roll of paper is being secured to the shaft in the manner described, I provide a spring pawl 28, secured at one end to one side of the casing 1 below the inner end of the bearing notch 12 and in position to engage the teeth of the pinion on the shaft 24: when the shaft is placed in the bearing notch. The free end of the spring pawl 28 is provided with a tooth 29 adapted to engage the teeth of the gear 26 when the shaft 24: is removed from the bearing notch 12, thus locking the gear and holding the spring against unwinding. When placed in position in the compartment 6, the end of the shaft 24 will engage and depress the spring pawl 28, thus disengaging the tooth 29 from the gear 26 and permitting the gear to be actuated by the spring for revolving the shaft through the pinion 25 to wind up the paper strip from the roll 20 containing the permanent record of the checks.
Between the sheets or strips of paper from the rolls where the strips pass over the plate 23 are arranged sheets 30 of carbon paper whereby impressions of the writing made on the outer sheet of paper from the rolls is made on the intermediate and inner sheets thus enabling checks to be made out in triplicate. The side edges of the carbon sheets project beyond the side edges of the strips of paper from the rolls and said projecting edges of the carbon sheets are securely fastened to the plate 23 by means of longitudinally disposed upwardly projecting clamping ribs 31 formed on the plate 23 and which are adapted to engage longitudinally disposed slots 32 formed in a cover plate 33 secured to the upper side of the body or casing 1 and over the rolls of paper therein. In the plate 33 above the plate 23 and the portion of the strips engaging the latter is an opening 34: through which the upper strip of paper is exposed as said strips are drawn from the rolls so that the matter may be written on the paper. The plate 23 is securely fastened in the upper portion of the body 1 preferably by barbs 35 struck and bent downwardly from the plate 23, said barbs being adapted to be engaged with a suitable portion of the body. When arranged in place the ends of the plate 23 rest on the partitions 2 and 3 of the body, thus forming a firm support for the paper strips from the rolls whereby the latter may be readily written upon. The outer or cover plate 33 is fastened in any suitable manner to the lower end of the body and at the upper end is preferably locked to the body to prevent the casual removal of said plate and tampering with the mechanism within the body of the holder. The inner or lower end of the cover plate 33 is preferably provided with a centrally disposed groove or notch 36 which permits the ends of the paper to be readily grasped and drawn from the holder.
In the compartment to one side of the body 1 are arranged two rolls 37 and 38 of paper, supported on shafts 39 and 40 one of the ends of each of which is journaled in bearing apertures 41 formed in the partition plate 2 while the opposite ends are removably j ournaled in bearing notches 42 formed in a bearing plate 43 secured to one side of the partition 3 as shown. On the shafts 39 and 40 adjacent to one end of the rolls of paper are fixedly mounted friction gears 44 whereby the shafts are connected together to turn in unison. The strips of paper are unwound from the rolls 37 and 38 in opposite directions and said strips pass through a slot 45 formed in the bottom of the body 1 and across the adjacent portion of said bottom, said portion being preferably inwardly depressed to a slight extent as shown. After passing across the depressed portion of the bottom, the inner strip of paper from the roll 37 passes back through a slot 46 in the bottom and is secured to a winding shaft 47 revolubly mounted in the partitions 2 and 3 in the same manner as the shafts 39 and 40 of the paper rolls 37 and 38. The shaft 47 is split longitudinally or constructed in the same manner as the shaft 24 to form means for securing the end of the paper thereto. Engaged with one end of the shaft 47 is a pinion 48, serving to clamp the split sections of the shaft together and into engagement with the end of the paper as described in connection with the shaft 24.
Revolubly mounted on a stub shaft 49 se cured to the partition 3 adjacent to one end of the shaft 47 is a gear 50 to which is se cured one end of a coiled spring 51 the opposite end of which is secured to the shaft 49 whereby when said spring is wound up, the pressure of the same will be applied to the gear 50 for the purpose of operating the latter. The gear 50 meshes with the pinion 48 whereby when said gear is turned by the spring, the movement of the gear is imparted through the pinion to the shaft 47 to wind up the strip of paper from the roll 37. The gear 50 is held against movement and the spring thus prevented from unwinding or running down when the shaft 47 and pinion 48 are removed, by a spring pawl 52 which is constructed and operated in the same manner as the pawl 28 which locks the gear 26 hereinbefore described.
The strips of paper passing over the inwardly depressed portion of the bottom of the body are guided and held in position by a plate 53 below the inwardly depressed portion of the bottom and is secured to the latter at one end by suitable lugs formed on the plate and adapted to be engaged with apertures in the adjacent portions of the bottom, said plate having at its opposite end of a spring catch 54 which is adapted to spring intov engagement in a slot 55 formed in the bottom and cannot be released except from the inside of the holder after the top plate has been removed therefrom, thus securely fastening the frame 53 in place. Between the strips of paper from the rolls 37 and 38 is arranged a carbon sheet 56 by means of which an impression is made on the inner strip, of the writing on the outer strip thus duplicating a check written on the outer strip. The carbonsheets are held in position by clamping ribs 57, (see Fig. 9)
I formed on the inner sides of the frame adjacent to the side edges thereof, said flanges or ribs being adapted to engage grooves or recesses 58 formed in the adjacent portions of the bottom of the body as shown. The rolls 37 and 38 of pap-er are provided and arranged as herein shown and described to provide means whereby additional orders given subsequent to the making and turning in of the original checks may be written and recorded. In making out these supplemental checks or orders the number of the original check or order is placed thereon so that these additional or supplemental checks may be identified with the original checks. In making out the supplemental checks the outer sheet or strip of the paper from the roll 38 is drawn out between the outer portion of the frame 53 and the bottom of the body 1 at one side of the holder in the same manner that the strips from the rolls l6 and 19 are drawn from the end of the holder while the strip from the roll 37 is wound upon the shaft 47 and forms a permanent record of the supplemental checks.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inventionwill be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
1. A writing tablet of the character described comprising a casing, a plurality of paper holding shafts revolubly mounted thereon and carrying rolls of paper adapted to be unwound therefrom, a platen for supporting the paper unwound from the rolls, a paper winding shaft revolubly mounted in said casing, said shaft being split longitudinally to receive the end of the paper from one of said rolls, a pinion mounted upon the open end of said shaft whereby the split sections of the same are clamped together to fasten the paper engaged between the same, a spring actuated gear engaged with said pinion whereby said shaft is turned to wind the paper thereon, and a spring pawl adapted to engage said spring actuated gear when said winding shaft and pinion thereon are removed from the casing thereby preventing the spring from unwinding, said pawl being disengaged from the gear by the said pinion when the latter and said winding shaft are placed in position in the casing.

A writing tablet of the character described comprising a casing having in one side a series of depressions each of which isprovided with a bearing aperture, a bearing plate arranged in the opposite side of the casing, said plate having formed therein a series of bearing notches opening through the outer edge of the plate, a plurality of shafts revolubly mounted in said bearing apertures and notches and carrying rolls of paper, a paper supporting plate arranged in the casing to receive and support the strips of paper one above the other when drawn from the rolls, a cover plate adapted to be locked on said casing to cover said rolls of paper, said cover plate having there: in longitudinal carbon paper holding grooves and an opening through which the outer strip of paper may be written upon, longitudinal ribs arranged on the paper supporting plate and adapted to engage in the grooves in the cover plate and grasp sheets of carbon paper arranged between the strips of paper above said paper supporting plate said sheets of carbon paper having their edges secured in the grooves of said cover plate by the ribs on said supporting plate whereby duplicate and triplicate copies of the written matter on the outer strip of paper are made on the intermediate and inner strips of paper.
