raienacctai-ia13- To ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that LCHAizLns BERGER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im rovement in Car,
End Underframes, of which the following is afull, clear, land exact description, such as willv enable others skilled in theyart to2- which it PPertains. to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming, part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 isaplan view of a car end under frame of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is -a sect-ion taken lengthwise through the center of the car end under framel and upon the line 2-2of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken approximately onf the line 3-3 of lilig.- 2.' Fig."4'is a'plan View underframe. Figz 5 is al rear end elevation of the modified constructionA of the underframe, illustrated in' Fig; 4i
This invention relates generally to car under frame construction and more particularly to an Aunder frame. of the ends of passenger cars having vestibule ends. In'Patent No. 873,800 issued tome December 17, 1907 I disclosed an Vunder frame construction particularly adapted for use in connection with freight cars and my present invention is an improvement on 'the con# struction shown and described insaid 'patent, and contemplates the combination of a I '35 series of special castings arranged and com- The principal objects of my inventionl are to rovide a strong, rigid built-up car end undJer frame, the parts of which combine in resisting service strains` and stresses, and y which under frame can be easily assembled, or taken apart for the purposes of repair,

j. ,fashion, thereby takingthe shearing strains S. SHALLEN` off the rivets lor like fastening devices used for 4attaching the platform member to the vunder frame member. 'llo 4thealiove purposes my/ invention con- .sists in certain lnovelifeaturfes of construction and arrangement -of-.parts .hereinafter `more fully described and claimed. i
.--As shown in the accompanying drawings lthe main casting of the under frame comv prises a bolster 1, end sill'2, side sills 3, pair of center sills 4 and diagonally disposed ,brace members 5, between the. central por- {tion ofthe bolster land the ends vof the end sill 2, all of which parts areforined integral. Y The bolster 1 is preferably -Ishaped in cross section having a center bearing plate 6 formed integralwith its bottom flanges at ,its center, and provided at its ends with the .pairs of' depending perforated lugs4 7 tol ,which the-ends of'ithe side truss'rods are attached. 'The end sill 2 may be of any desired shape in cross section, and formed integral with. the top-of said end sill along Athe front edge' thereofis a vertically disunder frame.
' An integral transversely dis vosed'plate 10- unites the upper portions'of t e center sills at a point preferably midwayA between the bolster 1 and end sil12. The platform .memf
ber of my improved under frame is preferably cast in one piece and comprises a hori-l zontally disposed plate 11, vertically disposed 4front and rearfwalls 12 and T13, vertically disposed side walls 14 and centrally ,i disposed .Walls 15,(Which perform the function of braces.
The rear 'Wall 13 is `positioned directly against and is `fixed to the cent-ral portion of the vertically disposed flange 8 by means of rivets or like fastening devices. Formed integral with the under side of the plate 11 is a pair of longitudinally disposed vertical Webs 16, portions of Which project beneaththe top plate or flange of the en d sill 2, and said projecting portions 'lie immediately against the inner faces of the vertically disl posed Webs of the center sills 4:.
.rest directly upon arid are attached in any suitable manner to my nnproved car Aend underframes, and when saidsills are prop erly positioned their' ends bear directly I platform casting', and at the front edgeagainst the longitudinally disposed flange 8. Thus a very solid and substantial support is formed yfor the end portions of the car body, .and all buiiing and pulling strains upon the buiing beam, and said underframes, vare distributed ovei areas of considerable eX- tent at both ends ofthe car body.
By my improved construction the latforni casting is supported from 4the en sill 'of the underfraine casting in cantaliver fashion, and thereby the platform castinof is -capable of supporting great Vivveiglit iersides eifectually resisting the various service strains and stresses to which it is ordinarily subjected. i
Formed integral with theunderside of the thereof is a transversely disposed plate 18 adapted to receive the stirrup or angle utilized for supporting the draw-bai'. Formed integral With the lower edge of the front' Wall 12,01 the platform casting is av forwardly projecting' transversely disposed plate 19, which serves as a support for the' buffer beam` 20. This buffer beam, which is preferably castin a single piece, is hollow and is provided in its topy surface Witha centrally disposed vrecess SOaadapted to receive a threshold plate (not shown). This butiing beam is rigidly fixed to the platform casting by means of rivets or like fastening devices inserted through suitable openings formed through the rear `Wall of said buffer beam, and through the front Wall 12 of the platform casting. 1
Formed through the front and rear Walls of the buffer beam, and through the Wall 12 of the platform casting are aliued openings 21 adapted to receive the stems of the buffer plate, which is positioned in the usual inanner. immediately in front of the central portion of the buffer beam.
In the modified construction illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 an extension-22 is formed inbolster 1, and Which extension is approximately of inverted U, shape or box shape in crossv section, and serves as a support and bea-ring for the attachment of the center sills. By such construction the draft sills are in direct alnement With the center sills 4, and all direct bufling and pulling strains imparted to the underframes are, in turn, transmitted to the draft sills.
'A car end underframe .of my improved r\construction i's composed of three main parts', which, when properly assembled and united, are `so disposed with rela-tion yto one another as` to act as a unit in effectually resisting all service strains and stresses, combined lightness of Weight With great strength` and rigidity, can be easily and cheaply manufactured, and assembled and the platform casting carrying the buffer beam is connected to and supported by the underframe casting after the manner of a cantaliver, thereby insuring great strength and carrying capacity of said platform casting and buffer beam.
It Will be readily understood that minor changes in the construction and 'combination of the various parts of my improved device may be made and substituted for those here in shown and described, Without departing fi'om the spirit of my invention, the scope ofy which is set forth in the appended claims.
