To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHAN W. Price, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbus, in the county of Lowndes and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in self-cleaning curry combs.

My invention has for its object to im' prove the construction of a curry comb to the end that the same may be easily manipulated to instantly free the comb of all hair and dirt between the teeth and comb plates.

Another object is to provide a self-clean i ng curry comb including a slotted pivotally held cleaner plate which can be instantly actuated to free the comb of all adhering hairs and other matter, the comb being simple of construction and positive of operation.

With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claim, it being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1, shows a top view of a comb embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a section on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a section on line 3, 3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detached detail of the cleaner plate. Fig. 5, shows an end view of the comb showing the cleaner plate in its tilted position.

In the use of a curry comb as conventionally constructed, the tooth plates soon become clogged with the hair and dandruff removed from the animal in the currying operation. Ordinarily the operator frees the comb in tapping the same on a solid base as well as using a brush to remove the adhering matter. This requires two tools and entails a considerable loss of time. In my present invention I provide a curry comb which can be instantly cleaned.

In the drawings I show a strap metal member forming the frame and handle, the handle being marked 1, while the two frame members 2, 2, extending from the handle, are held in parallel spaced relation each bar 2, being provided with suitable openings. Held to these frame members 2, 2, by means of the eyebolts 4, and the rivets 3, is a comb plate 5, having its forward edge 6, bent at right angles and serrated to form a tooth plate while strips of metal within the plate are bent at right angles and serrated to form the tooth plates 7, 8, 9 and 10, as shown in Fig. 2. The edges 11 and 12, of the plate 5, arefiared inward and each ends in a securing flange (1, through which suitable rivets and eye-bolts pass to secure the plate to the frame, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The edge 12, has a portion 13, rebent to form a tubular pin sleeve within which is held the pin 14. Pivotally held upon the pin 14, by means of the integral ears 16, shown in Fig. 1, is the slotted cleaner plate 17, which strides the combs as will be understood in referring to Fig. 2. llithin the slots 18, shown in Fig. 4, of this plate are held the combs. One end 19, of the cleaner plate 17, is slightly curved upward while the opposite edge is in the form of a flange 20, having an opening 21, as shown in Fig. 4. Pivotally held within the eyes of the bolts 4, is a crank shaft 22, having its end 23, bent at right angles to serve as a stop. Intermediate of its ends the shaft, which is preferably made of wire, is provided with the outstanding crank 24, in the form of a loop while the opposite end 25, extends at right angles and is curved to form an operating lever 25. As shown the operating lever is positioned adjacent to the handle 1. The lever 25, serves as a stop at that end to prevent lateral displacement of the shaft. EX- tending from the crank 24, is a link 27, which has its end 28, engaged within the opening 21, of the cleaner plate.

The cleaner plate as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, is provided with two openings 29, and held within these openings is the curved end 30, of the coil spring 31, which has its remaining end 32, secured within an opening within one of the bars 2, and the flange 11, as shown in Fig. 1. By this means the cleaner plate is normally held astride of the tooth plates as shown in Fig. 3.

In the use of the comb when it is desired to clean the same it is simply necessary for the operator to extend his thumb and tilt the operating lever 25, downward. This results in the cleaner plate 17, sliding over the combs to remove all hair and other clinging matter. The outward movement of the cleaner plate 17, is limited by the eye 28, of the link 27, coming in contact with the flange 12, as shown in Fig. 5. On releasing the lever 25, the plate 17, is at once again brought over the teeth.

A curry comb constructed according to my invention, is simple of construction, durable and efficient in operation, and can be cleaned with ease accuracy and despatch.

Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

In combination, a frame including a handle ending in two bars held in parallel spaced relation, a comb plate having oppositely positioned converging securing flanges, portions of said plate being stamped out and serrated to form a plurality of combs, one of said flanges having a portion curved outward to form a pin sleeve, a pin within said sleeve, means to secure said flanges to said bars, two eye-bolts secured to one of said frame bars, a slotted cleaner plate striding said combs having bars engaging said pin and an outstanding apertured flange, a crank shaft held within said eyebolts, having an operating lever positioned adj acentto said handle, a link extending from the crank of said shaft and engaging said aperture, and a spring extending from one of said bars and engaging said cleaner plate, as and in the manner set forth.
