CONSTRUCTION OF TBOLLEY INSULATED SECTIONS.
Application filed. Dec-ember 2, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROYAL RUEBEN MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Trolley InsulatedSections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in construction of trolley insulated sections adapted to a trolley line conveying electric current, and providing an insulated section therein, and the objects of my invention are; first, to provide a more economical method of constructing an insulated section; second, simplicity of parts there n; third, to provide an insulated section readily attachable to a trolley line. I attain these objects by the mechanisms illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 shows the device attached to an electric trolley line; Fig. 2, shows one end of the insulating section in side elevation; Fig. 3, shows a top plan of one end of the insulated section; and Fig. 1 shows in perspective the insulating material and its form.
At each end of the insulated section is the clamping piece 2 attached to the main trolley line 1 by means of set screws 5, and the exterior end of the clamping piece 2 may if desired be bent over the main line 1. The lips 3 and 1 are provided on this clamping piece 2 with suitable holes for the bolts 8. The insulated section head 6 is provided with lips 11 and 12 with suitable holes therein for the bolts 9 and having thereon ears 10 to which may be attached guy wires. Suitable holes are also provided in an eX- tended interior piece 7 for the set screws 7 to hold the insulated trolley section 1". The insulating material 13 is provided in the form shown in Fig. 1 having on the under neath side the slot let to fit over and receive the trolley wire 1, and is provided with holes 15 to admit of the bolts 8 and 9. A space intervenes between the clamping piece 2 and the insulated section head 6 so that by means of the insulated material 13 the section 1 is completely insulated from all current passing over the trolley line 1. It will thus be seen that the clamping piece 2 is readily attachable to the trolley line 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

without interfering with the same, and by reason of the set screws 5 being brought into operation, the same may be clamped firmly to the trolley line 1 and thus avoid any cutting of the trolley line for the placing of the insulated section. Nhatever strain may be placed. upon 1 by reason of the trolley wheel running on it, is relieved and taken care of by reason of the guy wires attaching to the ears 10 and it will readily appear that such insulated section may be readily applied at any desired part without the necessity of cutting the trolley line and may be removed without in any manner affecting the trolley line. The device also provides readily for the replacing of any part and as the ends are similar the parts are readily interchangeable for repairs without having to replace the whole of the line, and in like manner the insulated section 1 may be readily replaced at any time and given the desired length without interfering with the rest of the construction.
I am aware that insulated sections of trolley lines are not new and I do not claim the same broadly, but in the construction of an insulated section in an electric trolley.
Tn an insulated section for a trolley wire, as described, a clamping piece with an inclined plane constituting an approach, attached to the trolley line by opposed set screws; lips provided on said clamping piece adapted to receive insulating material retained by bolt means; a head piece of the insulated section provided with lips adapted to receive the insulating material retained by bolt means and provided with ears usable for guying purposes and an extended element adapted to receive a wire provided with set screw means to retain the same; said insulating material disposed between the lips of said clamping piece and the lips of said head of the insulated section said insulating material provided with a groove partly to inclose the trolley line; said clamping piece and said head of the insulated section so disposed upon said insulating material as to leave a space between them, all substantially as set forth.
