[Be it known that we, ALEXANDER .A. Forzoors and GEORGE L. MORR SON, citlzens of the United States, residing at Detroit,, county of Wayne, and Hudson, county of' Lenawee', State of Michigan, respectively, have lnvented a certain new and useful Impror'ementin Collapsible Boxes, and declare the following to be a full,-clear, and exact. description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference beingl had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to paper boxes and has for its object a box that is collapsible and that has va reinforcing member which .and the reinforcing member is drawn into serves to impart rigidity to the box when it isin, position for service. a
This box is especially designed for hats position, as the box is opened out from a collapsed position, by the strings which tie the cover on and which may be used to carry the box. v

The blank is scored parallel to its four edges by the lines a;o. These lines are set a distance from the edge equal to the height of the box that is desired to be constructed. These parallel scorings cross forming the four .gussets 1 that are diagonally scored by the lines b-b, so that each gusset is bisected to fold together as shown in Fig. 2. The sides 2fof the blank are vdiagonally scored-by .the lines 0, which substantially bisect the angles at the inside corners of thesides and extend to the edges. These sc'oringsallow the collapsing of the sides inward, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the othertwo sides of the 'box may fold down oven.
the sides -The gussets 1 are fastened to the sides 2 of the box by staples or other fasteners that are inserted at'the top as shown in Fig. .2 at 3. Cooperating with these gussets or corner-members at each side is a reinforcing member or strip t which comprises a strip of stifi paper board, or metal may be used if desired.- The ends are scored as at d by a diagonal scoring that registers with the scoring 0 when the strip is in place at the bottom of the side 2. It is, therefore, evident that when the reinforcing member 4 is at the bottom of the side 2 that it is still held between the gusscts 1 and the side 2 and yet it in no way interferes with the collapsing of the box, as in Fig. 3.. Its position at the bottom of the side 2 is shown in Fig. 5. There are a couple of perforations 5 in the strip and through these passes a cord 6, which passes to the outside of the box through the two perforations 7 in the'side 2 which are spaced apart the same distance as the perforations 5 and are in horizontal line, hence when both portions of the cord 6 are simultaneously pulled through the hole 7, the reinforcing strip rises to the top of the box, as shown in Fig. 6 and is'held in place by the gussets 1. It is, however, obvious that this reinforcing strip now counteracts the tendency of the sides to collapse along the scorings 0.
By tying the two cords 6 (one cord being connected to each reinforcing strip) as shown in Fig. 11, the reinforcing strips are held in their upper position where they are of service. It is apparent that when the box is carried by the cords 6 that the reinforcing strips will be forced to their upper most position and hence the more strain on the cords the tighter do the reinforcing strips engage with the gussets. These cords 6 serve also to tie the cover 8 upon the box. This cover 8 is scored parallelto its edges by lines ee.. A collapsible box comprising a rectangular blank, having parallel scorings forming the bottom and the sides of the box and forming portions intervening between the sides that are scored obliquely. and which form gussets that fold into the box, means for fastening the folded gussets to some of the sides, the said sides to which the gussets are folded having oblique scorings Which allow 'thesaid sides to collapse and separate reinforcing strips reciprocable between the bottom of the collapsible sides and the top of the collapsible sides, the said reinforcing strips being slid able between the scoredsides and the gussets that are fastened there to, substantially as described.
