To all whom/it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON Gr. EYLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Cedar and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to chairs having adjustable backs and seats; and my primary object is to provide improved mechanism for effecting the back adjustment and seat adjustment in chairs of this type.
The invention is illustrated in the preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a broken side elevational view of a chair constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a broken rear elevational view showing the manner in which the chair-back is pivoted on the frame; Fig. 3, a broken vertical section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. Fig. 4;, a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the back brokenly and in a reclining position, in which position the seat is tilted to correspond approximately in inclination with the inclination of the back; and Fig. 5, a sectional view taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 1, but showing the seat removed.
In the preferred construction, which is that illustrated, A represents a chair-body, or frame, having arms A; B, a seat tiltably and detachably mounted in the frame; G, a detachably mounted adjustable back; and D, D, seat-adjusting devices connected with and actuated by the back.
The frame A may be of any suitable construction. As shown, it comprises sidemembers 1 forming the arms and legs of the frame, a front cross-member 2 and a rear cross-member 3. The sides are equipped on their inner surfaces with longitudinal cleats, or bars, 4 adapted to support the seat in its normally horizontal position.
The seat B may comprise a frame 5 and a cushion 6. The side-members of the frame 5 are equipped at their lower edges near their front ends with studs. or dowels, 7 which may comprise small headed screws, which are received freely in sockets 8 with which the cleats a are provided in their Specification of Letters Patent.

front ends, this connection affording, in effect, a pivotal connection between the front portion of the seat and the front portions of the cleats 4: of the chair-frame.
The back may comprise a frame 9 and a cushion 10. The side-members of the frame 9 are equipped at their lower ends with triangular plates 11 adapted to serve as attaching means for the devices D, D. The frame 9 of the back is equipped near its lower end at its rear surface with clips 12 adapted to engage a cross-rod 13 which connects the rear portions of the seat-members l of the chair-frame at the rear posts thereof. The plates 11 are provided at their rear edges with rearwardly opening notches, sockets or bearings 14 which pivot on the rod 13. The clips, or retainer-plates, 12 are pivotally joined to the back frame at their upper ends by screws 15, and their lower ends are bent outwardly somewhat and adapted to engage the rear surface of the cross-rod 13, as will be readily understood from Figs. 2 and 4. Stop-screws, or studs, 16 received by lateral notches with which the outer edges of the clips 12 are provided, afford stops for the clips and serve to aid the screw in more securely fastening the clips to the chair-back. The plates, or members, 11 have projections, or extensions, 17 which extend below and in front of the back-pivot 13 and are equipped with laterallv-projecting studs 18.
Each of the devices D, D, comprises a lever 19 connected, by a pivot 20, with a clip 21 carried by the lower portion of the side-frame 1; a bar, or link, 22 connected, by a pivot 23, with the link 19 near the rear end thereof, the upper end of the link 22 having a hook. or notch, 24 which engages the stud 18 of the corresponding plate 11 and a seat-carrying member, or link, 25 whose lower end is connected, by a pivot 26, with the link 19, said link, or bar, 25 extending upwardly through a slot 27 in the rear portion of the corresponding bar 4 and having a laterally turned upper end 28 upon which the rear portion of the corresponding side-member of the seat-frame 5 is adapted to rest. The device D is equipped, however, with means for securing the back in different positions of adjustment. To this end, the rearward extension 30 of the lever 19 of the mechanism D has connected therewith, by a pivot 31, a locking-bar 32, whose rear edge is provided with a series of locking-notches 33 adapted to engage the pivot rod 13 of the back. The locking-bar 32 has a downward extension 34 which is connected by a coil-spring 35 to the lower end of the downward extension of the link 22. Attached to the locking-bar 32 of the device'D is astrong coil-spring 36 whose lower end is attached to the chair-frame at or adjacent the corresponding rear leg. The spring 35 tends to hold the locking-bar 32 in looking engagement with the shaft, or back-pivot, 13. T 0 effect release of the locking-bar, at will, there is provided a crank-rod, or shaft, 37 journaled near its outer end in the correspondi-ng side-member 1 of the frame and journaled near its inner end in a bearing 38 in the form of a clip applied to the inner surface of the rear cross-member 3, as shown in Fig. 5. The shaft 37 has an intermediate crank-portion 39 which is adapted to engage the rear edge of the locking-bar 32 and to swing the upper end of the locking-bar forwardly. The rock-shaft 37 has its outerend equipped with an actuatinghandle 40.
The operation may be briefly explained. Assuming the chair-back to be in the standing position shown in Fig. 1, it may be lowered by a person sit-ting in the chair, it be ing necessary only to move the handle 40 to release the locking-bar fro-m engagement with the pivot-shaft 1'3, whereupon the person occupying the chair may lean back and force the back to a reclining position, in which operation the rear portion of the seat will be elevated through the medium of the members 25. The reverse operation may be effected by releasing the locking-bar 32 from engagement with the shaft 31, whereupon the springs involved in the structure tend to return the back to the standing position, the weight'of the occupant serving to insure such return, so that powerful springs are unnecessary.
The fixtures necessary in a construction of the character described are simple of construction and easily and cheaply manufac- As thus tured and readily applied, and the operation is certain and readily performed, and the construction of the chair is such as to render is particularly desirable for use for reclining purposes. Ordinarily, in chairs of this construction, extensible foot-rests are employed, but for simplification, I have omitted. to show the foot-rest in the accompanying drawings.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
WVhat I regard as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. In a chair of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a pivoted seat, levers pivoted on said frame, seatcarrying members mounted on said levers, aback pivoted directly to the frame, links connecting said levers with said back below and in front of the pivot thereof, and a lockinghar for the back connected with one of said levers.
2. In a chair of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a pivoted seat, a back pivoted directly to the frame, levers pivoted on said frame, seat-carrying members mounted on said levers, links connecting said levers with said back below and in front of the pivot thereof, a locking-bar for the back connected with one of said levers, and a rock-shaft equipped with means for releasing said locking-bar.
3. In a chair of the character set forth, the combination of a frame comprising sidemembers, a tiltably mounted seat, levers pivotally connected at their front ends with said side-members a short distance in front of the rear end of the chair-frame, a back pivoted on said frame and having its sideinembers equipped with plates extending downwardly and forwardly in front of the pivot, links pivotally connected at their upper ends with said plates and pivotally joined near their lower ends to said levers, springs connected with said links and tending to hold the chair-back in the upright position, and a locking-bar pivotally connected with the rear end of one of said levers.
