W. R. MATHIS.
SUBSOIL ATTACHMENT FOR FLOWS.
APPLICATION FILED 111111.11, 1913.
1,075,585. Patented 001.14, 1913.
TTNTT A air this WILLIAM R. IVIA'I'HIS, OFINEW BOSTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO MATHIS 'SU'BSOIIJER ATTACHMENT COMPANY, OF NEW BOSTON, TEXAS.
"SUBSOIL ATTACHMENT FOR"PLOWS.
Specification .of. Letters. Patent.
Patented Oct. 14, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM R. MATHIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Boston, in the county of Bowie and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Subsoil Attachment for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a subsoiling attachment for plows, one of its objects being to provide a simple, durable and efficient attachment which can be placed readily in position on a plow and will operate eflioiently to loosen the subsoil.
Another object is to provide means whereby the attachment is held fixedly relative to the plow so as to be maintained constantly at the desired depth without pushing upwardly under the resistance offered by the soil.
A further object is to provide an attachment which can be adjusted easily to plow to desired depths.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :--Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plow having the present improvements combined therewith. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates a plow beam merging at its rear end into a standard B to which is connected the plows C. Handles D diverge rearwardly from the standard B and the moldboard of the plow and braces E connect the handles to the beam A.
The attachment constituting the present invention is preferably formed of a metal strip folded at its center to provide an elongated loop 1. From this loop the opposed portions of the strip extend along parallel lines and in contact, they being spaced apart at one point to form an eye 2 and at their free ends to form a fork 3. The contacting portions of the strip are also so shaped as to form a standard 4 in which the eye 2 and the loop 1 are produced and to form a forwardly extending arm 5 oflset at an intermediate point, as shown at 6. The opposed portions of the metal strip can be held together at desired points by means of rivets 7 or the like.
The fork 3 is adapted to embrace the beam A and is held in place by a bolt 8 which also serves to connect the braces E to the beam A. The eye 2 receives the flattened end 9 of a brace rod 10, this end 9 being provided with a longitudinal series of apertures 11 any one of which is adapted to receive a bolt 12 which extends through the eye 2. The forward or lower end of the brace 10 is preferably flattened and has an opening 13.
This end portion is adapted to rest at one side of the lower end of standard B and is secured in place by a bolt 14 which also serves to connect the standard B to the landside of the plow C.
The loop 1 receives a bolt 15 whereby the subsoiling plow 16 is secured upon the front face of the loop. It will be apparent that by removing the bolt 12. the standard A can be swung upwardly or downwardly relative to the brace 10 so as to bring the point of the subsoiling plow toany desired elevation relative to the plow C. A fter the subsoiling plow has been brought to the desired position, bolt 12 can be reinserted into the eye 2 and also into the opening 11 alining therewith. After the brace 10 has thus been secured to the standard 4 it will be seen that the standard will be held positively against movement relative to the beam A, this being due to the fact that said standard has its forwardly extending arm. 5 bolted to the beam at 8. As the brace rod 10 is extended upwardly and rearwardl'y, it will be seen that it is subjected solely to a longitudinal strain while the subsoiling plow 16 is in use and there is thus no danger of the brace becoming distorted as the result of the severe strains to which it is subjected.
\Vhat is claimed is A subsoiling attachment for plows, including a standard formed in a single length of metal folded at its center to produce an elongated loop and an eye spaced from and above the loop, there being a forwardly extending arm integral with the standard and terminating in a fork made up of the terminals of the strip, said arm being offset adjacent the fork, a laterally ofiset brace for attachment to the lower end of a plow stand- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. MATHIS.
ard, one end of said brace being extended l/Vitnesses: through the eye, and means for adjustably A. W. DESI-IONG, connecting the brace to the eye. M. E. TAYLOR.
