SEWING-MACHINE BRAIDER OE CORDER.
Application filed April 6, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HUBnir. M. Grnis'r, a citizen of the United States, and EMANUEL J. BorLnn, a citizen of Canada, and both residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machine Braiders or Corders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a sewing machine braider or corder, and has for its ob-' ject to provide an attachment of this kind which is of such construction as to provide a convenient adjustment of the guiding passage, so that the same may be readily varied for use in connection with braids or cords of different widths or sizes; as also to provide a construction whereby the braid or cord may be readily inserted into the guiding passage. To this end the body of the attachment is formed in two sheet metal parts, portions of which are so bent as to provide a guiding passageway, one of these parts being adjustable relative to the other so that the width of the said guiding passageway may be readily varied. The adjustable part, in the preferred form of the invention, is acted on by a bell-crank lever one arm of which has a lip or projection engaging a recess in the said adjustable part, and the other arm of which is preferably provided with a spring loop which embraces portions of both of the sheet metal part-s of the attachment in such a manner as to afford a frictional grip on the two parts of sufficient strength to maintain the said parts, and also the said adjusting lever, in any desired position of adjustment. The improved braider or corder is preferably adjnstably and detachably secured to a presser foot which is, in turn, adapted to be readily attached to a sewing machine presser bar.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved braider or corder, and Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Figs. 3 and t are opposite side views of the improved attachment.
Referring to the drawing 12 denotes a presser-foot provided with a shank portion 13 by means of which the said foot may be detachably secured to the presser-bar of a sewing machine. The braider or corder Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 688,906.
proper comprises two sheet metal parts or plates 14- and 15. The plate 14, in the construction herein shown, is provided with an upwardly extending flange or portion 16 provided with a key-hole slot 17 to enable the said flange or portion to be brought beneath the head 18 of the two-part clamping bolt 19 having a milled head 20 by which it may be tightened and loosened, this clamping bolt construction being similar in operation to the clamping bolt attaching device shown and described in Patent No. 900,067, dated Sept. 29, 1908.
In applying the braider or corder to the presser-foot the larger portion of the keyhole slot is brought into register with the head 18 of the clamping bolt, and the device is then moved laterally to bring the said head opposite any desired part of the narrow portion of said key-hole slot. From this it will be understood that when the clamping bolt is loosened the braider or corder may be adjusted laterally on the presser foot, as circumstances may require, or may be readily removed from the said presser foot by again bringing the larger portion of the key-hole slot into register with the said head 18.
The front portion of the normally fixed part or plate 1 of the braider or corder is bent downward to form a lip 21 which is connected with the body of the said part let by a vertical flange 22 which forms one side or wall of the braid guiding passage, the other side or wall of said guiding passage being formed by a vertical flange or lip 28 on the adjustable plate 15. The plate 15 is also provided with a horizontal lip 24 overlying the guiding passage and having an upturned end beneath which a braid or cord may be drawn, when it is desired to insert the same into the guiding passage, the said lip and the plate on which it is formed being of spring metal so that these parts will yield to such pressure as may be necessary in inserting a braid or cord into this guiding passage. The adjustable part 15 is also preferably provided with a small finger 25 extending across the front portion of the bottom of the guiding passage and entering a small aperture 26 in the vertical wall or flange 22.
Pivotally attached to the plate lat, by means of a rivet 27, is a bell-crank adjusting lever comprising the arms 28 and 22 The said bell-crank lever overlies the ad justable plate 15, the latter being slotted for the passage of the rivet 27 so that the said plate 15 may move laterally to a limited extent. The forwardly extending arm 28 of the bell-crank lever is provided with a downwardly extending lip 30 which enters an aperture 31 formed in the said plate 15; and the free end of the laterally extending arm 29 of the said bell-crank lever is formed into a spring loop 32 which embraces portions of both of the said plates 14: and 15 in such a manner as to have a frictional grip thereon, so as to hold the said plates and the said lever in any desired positions of adjustment. That portion of the movable plate 15 which is beneath the arm 29 of the said bell-crank adjusting lever is provided with lips 33 embracing a portion of the stationary plate 14, so that said movable plate will. be slidingly engaged with the said stationary plate in such a manner as to maintain the side walls of the guiding passage in par-' allel relation to each other in all posit-ions of adjustment of the plate 15 relative to the plate 14-.
From the foregoing it vill be understood, that the width of the braid or cord guiding passage 34 between the walls afforded by the vertical flanges 22 and 23 on the fixed and adjustable plates 1 1- and 15 may be varied by changing the position of the adjusting bell-crank lever comprising the arms 28 and 29, the lip 21 forming the bottom wall of said guiding passage which is closed at its top by the overlying lip 24. It will also be understood that the said plates and the said lever will be maintained in any desired position of adjustment owing to the frictional grip afforded by the spring loop 32 on the arm 29 of the said bell-crank le er, and which spring loop frictionally embraces portions of both of said plates 14 and 15. The adjustment of the device, for accommodating different widths or sizes of braids or cords, may be readily and quickly effected without requiring such inconvenience and delay as is incidental to the use of set screws heretofore generally employed in devices of this character in holding adjustable parts in any desired positions in relation to each other.
. When the width of the guiding passage 34 is considerably varied it may be necessary to adjust the braider or corder laterally relative to the needle or the presser-foot, and in a plane transverse to the direction of the feed of the work, in order to maintain the variable guiding passage in central aline-' ment with the notch or needle recess 35 in the presser foot 12; and such slight lateral adjustment as may be required, under these circumstances, may be effected simply by loosening the clamping bolt 19 and adjusting the connected parts of the attachment laterally on the presser foot by virtue of the construction aflorded by the narrower portion of the key-hole slot 17 in the up wardly extending part or flange 16 on the plate lt.
The invention is not to be understood as being limited to all the details herein shown and described, nor to any particular manner of mounting the braider or corder proper on the presser foot. While the construction herein shown and described provides what is termed a top braider it will be understood that it will. be within the present in vention to so mount the parts of the attachment as to provide an under braider if desired.
Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
