FROJECTILE WITH VISIBLE TRAJECTORY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ct. ist, 1913.
Application led January 25, 1913. Serial No. 744,224.
To aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, KARL lllrnsnn, residing at Bredeney, Germany, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Projectiles with Visible Trajectories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to projectiles, the trajectory of .which is made visible by means of a charge, such as for instance,.
a smoke producing charge.
One embodiment of the invention is represented in the drawing, Wherein- Figure 1 shows a partly in side elevation of a portion of a projectile and Fig. 2 a top plan 'View of l. The point of the projectile is designated by letter A, and B is a housing mounted thereon which housing comprises a slightly conical part 701, a top b2 and base 7). The base L is shaped to conform with the point ot' the projectile and riveted to the liange o* et' the portion b1.' A fuse C is built in to the top b2, and this use is constructed in well known manner, so that it operates in tiring the projectile. The fuse is intended to ignite a smoke producing charge l)l inclosed by the housing B. In order to permit the flame from the smoke producing charge to be emitted from the housing B orifices L are provided in the parts' o1., lo* of the housing.
The connection between the housing B with the projectile is accomplished by a bayonet lock, which comprises a plurality ot' L-shaped slits b cut in the flange o* and the base bz, and by screws athreaded in the point of the projectile. t
ln tiring the projectile the fuse C is put in action and ignites the smoke producing charge. D. 'The smoke arising from the combustion of the smoke producing charge is emitted through the orifices b5, which makes the trajectory ot the projectile visible, so that the position of the trajectory relative to the target may be observed.
The easily detachable connection ot" the longitudinal section housing B with the projectile possesses the advantage, that the projectile may be tired as required with or Without the smoke producing charge. i
ln order to make it possible to fire projectiles provided With smoke producing charge and projectiles without smoke producing charge from the same gun, one directly after the other, without having to resort' to other tables and the change in the sight; the housing B has been provided with such external shape that the projectilewillafollow approximately the vsame trajectory Wit-h the same elevation of the gun. and with the Same propelling charge, smoke producing charge or not. This result is made ,possible through the slender shape of the housing B, whereby the projectile red with a smoke producing charge will experience less air resistancethan a projectile without a. smoke 'producing charge. The influence on the muzzle veloc ity and the consequent influence on the trajectory of the projectile, of the increased weight of thev projectile, caused by the housing carrying the smoke producing charge, is almost counteracted by the diminished air resistance.
l claim: v
l. ln a projectile carrying n charge for tracing its trajectory; a housing for said charge constructed to be easily detachable from the point of the projectile; the external shape of said housing being such, that the trajectory will remain practically unchanged if the projectile is 'fired with or without said charge from a gun with the identical propelling charge and the same elevation.
2. In a projectile carrying a smoke pro ducing charge lor tracing its trajectory; a housing for said charge comprisinga base conforming in shape to the point of the projectile. a body slightly tapered forward and orifices in the side of said body to emit the smoke from thc burning charge ixedly attached to said base and a top carrying a fuse; L-shaped slits in the housing whether it carries' and studs in the point of the projectile reg- The foregoing specification is signed at istering with said slits for easily detaching Barmen, Germany, this 4th day of J anuthe housing from the projectile'; the'shape ary/,1913.
of said housing being'such that the trajec- 1 KARL WIESER. [L. s] 5 torywill be practically unchanged, under In presence of- I otherwise similar firing conditions, Whether ALBERT NUFERj rtheprojecizile carnes the housing or not. ADOLF. HALDEWUNG.
