*me emm;
JOHN HORNSBY,-OF WOODBRIDGE NEW JERSEYr Letters Preteni No.107,496, datel September 20, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN KILNS FOR BURNING'- TILES, PIPES, &0.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concrn: I
Be it known that I, J OHN Houxsnr, of the .town of Woodbridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and. useful' Improvements in Kilns for Burning Tiles, Pipes, &0.; and I' do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acompaiying drawing forming a part of this specificatiou and to the letters of reference marked thereon. r
My invention has forits object an improvement in kilns for burning tiles, and pipes for drains, bricks, and such other prcparations of clay as are used for i like purposes, and which are required to' be burned.
The nature of my invcntiou consists First, in constructing and arranging the chimney or principal fine directly iu the center of the kiln, into which' are di'ccted a suitable number of other flnes, so as to distribute the hoat eveniy throughout the mass` of nolded clay that is designed to be subjeeted to the action ot' the beat.
It consists, in the second place, in making the kih ina eircular form, andcomluoting the heat to the top ot' the mass of nolded clay, and by the peculiar and novel Construction of the fluesthe heat is drawn down -through the mass equally on all sides, so, that every piece of clay in the mass is equally 'suhjected to its action, by which means the whole mass is burnt evenly and iu the very best manuer.
V in the manner hereinbefore stated, and a large percentagc of fuel is saved, for the reason that the heat is so evely distributed that it does not have to be forced, so as to reach the remote portions of clay' within the kiln to give it a 'suficient burn.
Itmay state that my invention is more particularly designed to bo used for burning dra-in-tilcs and Sewerppes. i
Toenable others skiiled in 'the art to make and use nyjnvention, I will procecd to describe its Construct-iou and operation.
. Figure l is a plan View of my improved ki1n,ivith a. portion of the perforated bottom broken'out, so as to show more clearly the position and arrangement ot Figura 2 is alongitudiual seotional elevation of the same,- taken through the line a: x.
r Letters of like name and kind refer toJi-ke' parts in each of the figures.
A may represent the base, containing the furnaces, V
of ny improved kiln, which may be made of any re quired Capacity, and circular in form.
Breprcsents the entraucc to the fire-ohamberg 'from thence into the main'center chinney or flue H,j
from which it escapes into the general atmosphere.
The perforated bottom F lies'or is supported on the fiues, or near them, in any well-known manner,
and the tiles or bricks or other molded `clay designed to beburned are packed thereon, through an opening made in the side of the shell or body of the kiln, (not' shown in the drawing, as it is not claimed as any part of my invention) until it is' full, when it is ready for putting in the fire.
lt will be understood that the perforations in the i bottom F come directly over the flues G G, so as to allow perfect freedom of dra-uglt.
Having thus describedin y invention,
What I claim as new,\and desire to s'ccure by Letters' Patent of the United States,-is-
In the circular kih, provided with a perforated floor, E, flues G, central chinney H, and peripheral furnaces A, as herein shown and described, the distinct upright flues D, when constructed and arranged, with reference to the other' parts named, in the manuer' and for the purposes herein shown and described.
