implement with particular reference to ascuts and angles required in framing a hipped roof.
' The invention comprises an improved construction as hereinafter set forthy and Claimed., 7 v e n In theaccompanying drawings, wherein similar reference numerals designate cor- I v g o side pieces 2,
Jto
responding .parts throughout: Figures 1 and 2 are opposite side elevations of the imlement, Fig. 3l is a section on line 3-3 of ig. 1, Fig. 4 is a section `on line 4-4 of Fig. "1 and Fig. 5 is a a roof framework.
In the practice of a stock 1 preferably to a standard spacing for rafters and comprisingside pieces 2 and 3 spaced apart to receive therebetween the square 4, which is connected at the outer extremity of its' tongue 5 with a pivot bolt 7, seated in the 3 as clearly shown. Iniconjunction with stock 1 and blade 6 of the square IA rovide indicators, as 2O and 30 convenient yin the form of T-shaped blocks which are slidably engaged in longitudinally extending slots 2', 3 of side pieces 2, 3 and constitute a Washer and a nut respectively for a clampin bolt' 31 which passes through a -longitu inally extending slot 6 of the blade. Indicator 30 i s relate to graduations, as Hexnand Oct., which are provided on side piece 3 to indicate correct ositions forf'the stock relatively to blade. 6 or marking miter cuts-on sticks for hexagonal and octag'onal frames. Indicator 20 is related -to scalesR and H provided on side lpiece 2 for determining by angular adjustments of stock 1 the length 'in inches I and fractions thereof per foot of run,.for
common and hip rafters. These adjustments are based .on two series of,
value. s
to adjustments of the.
fragmentary view ofl my invention providev conforming in length tions as R and I-I provided on blade 6, the first of said series bearing relation to scale It and the second to scale I-I. The graduations R relate to common rafters and indicate inches of rise vper foot of run and are so numbered, while'the graduations- H are spaced proportionately to indicate the rise of hip rafters per foot of run and numbered consecutively for identification as to their .In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a portion of theV framework for suplporting a roof, the same comprising the ip-rafters 40, common or jack-rafters 41, rafter-plate 42, purl-in-plate 43, the plancher 44, and the fascia 45.
The proper use of the implement will readily be seen from the following: `Withy the stock adjusted to any one of Vthe graduations R', as for tion 8, as indicated in tongue of the squarewill be in relative po,y
Sition. to indicate respectively the top and 'bottom'cuts for a common rafter having a rise of 8" to one foot of run and scale R may be read, by reference to indicator 20, to ascertain the length of the raftei per foot of run. Taking the graduation 0f the same number in the series II and adjusting the stock thereto the length of the hip rafter per foot of run of the corresponding` com mon rafter may be ascertained by referring 'to scale H.v
For indicating 'the proper angle of thev stock for marking the hip rafters for tip cuts I provide on blade 6 a series of gradua- -tions T and number the same in accordance with the graduations H', and for indicating the set of the-stock for markin these rafters for backing a series of' gra uations Bis provided on the-tongue and numbered in a like manner to'series T. Adjustments of the stock for marking miter cuts for purlin and fascia, side cutsl for jackl rafters and graduations M provided on the blade and numbered in the same order as the series just described, -while adjustments for marking butt cuts on vurln, and dwn cuts on purlin and .planc er are indicated on theexample the gradua- Fig. 1, the blade and e for plancher are indicated by .Y
ios
blade by :respective series of correspondingly numbered graduations, as B' -and D. The related graduations in the various series are designated by the same numeral and the implement is therefore adjusted accordingly in framing a-hipped roof after the rise in inches per foot of run of the common rafters has been determined.
In use tongue is used as a guide in markin fascia for miter cuts, jack rafters for si e cuts and hip rafters for cross tip cuts, while blade 6 is used as guide in markinvl the other cuts indicated. In al1 cases stoc 1 is applied to the stick being framed with the ton ue or blade extending over the surface to stood.
The numerals accompanying the various series of graduation marks B, B and T on Fig. 2, refer to the rise in inches per foot run of the common rafters. In other Words,
in operating the device, for example, with a rise of eight inches per foot run of the com-l mon rafters, the side piece 3 would be adjusted throughout the several operations to the numeral 8 of the various series of graduation marks. 0
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 'as nevv and desire to secure by Lete marked as will be readily 'under.
ters .Patent of the'United States of merpanion side pieces receiving said square' therebetween, said stock being' pivoted at a fixed point to said square and provided with scales on one side startin from the ixed ivot point, the other bla e of said square eing formed with a longitudinal slot, the free end portion of said stock bein formed with a longitudinal slot, blocks sli yably engaged in the slots of the companion side pieces f said stock and carrying indicators associated with the graduatio'ns aforesaid,
