ln the present case, I have illustrated the second magazine A as containing the matricas YJ, which are preferably of the ordi-A nary style, and unlike thecompound matricas-stored in the magazine A. Lec-ated in `proximity to the escapements B of the magazine A is a locking device in the form of a rock shaft B, which in one position holds the escapements B against actuation, and -in another position leaves them free to act. The magazine A is provided With a similar rock shaft B', arranged to lock the escapements B thereof or leave them free to act, as desired. The spe-. ciic form and mode of action of these rock' shafts R and R constitute no part oflv my present invention. Similar parts are disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States to George A.. Bates, No. 719,422, wherein the two shafts are provided with connections and operatingr means, so that when one is turned to operative position, the other is moved to inoperative position, that is to say,
- so that when the escapements of one magrazine are locked, those of the other magazine are unlocked.
The operation of my improved devices will now be readily understood. lf it be desired to deliver the compound matrices X from the magazine A. the element M is moved to the position shown in Figs. l and 3, thereby shifting` the arms K to connect the slides H and lll; and the rock shafts R vand it are turned to unlock the escapements nality of channels, this release being'V In order to secure.

The operation of the key l now ed'ect-s the conjoint and successive delivery of a pair of the coni-` pound matrices X, in the manner already described. lf, however, it be desired to deliver the ordinary matrices X from the magazine A', the element M is `moved to the position indicated in Fig. 4, thereby breaking the connection betvveenthe, slides H and H; and the rock shafts R and R are turned to lock the escapements B and to unlock the escapements B. Theoperation of the same key J now effects the individual A in the usual Way. y
I have qillustrated the adjusting' element M as distinct from and independent of the means for operating the rock shafts B and R, but obviously this element may be connebted'to the said means, so that a single 85 adjustment affects both 'the unlocking,r and locking,r of the escapements, and the'corre Sponding connection and disconnection of the actuatingr slides.
As previously stated, l have shown my invention only in preferred form and by wayof example, and as applied to a particular style of machine, but obviously many .variations and alterations may be made therein, and in its mode of application, Withoutdeparture from its scope. Thus,
the same principles may be adapted to many different uses, and are by no means confined to the specific numbers of magazines or of escapements described; nor to the specific forms of matrices set forth. Moreover, the precise form of the escapemenbactuating,1 devices, and of their connecting means, and of the mechanism for locking the matrices in 'their respective magazines, are in themselves 105 unimportant. Modifications in these and many other respects will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Havin thus described my invention, its
construction, and mode of operation, What I 11o claim and desire to secure by Letters'latent of-the United States, is as follows:
l. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality of magazines for the type or matrices, and means whereby at a ,115
single operation type or matrices may be delivered in one quantity .from one of the magazines or in another quantity from ani other of the magazines, at will.
2. In atypographical machine, the combination of t-Wo magazines for the type or matrices, and means whereby type or matrices may 4be delivered either conjointly from one of the magazines or singly from the other, at will.
3. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality ofmagazines each provided With escapements, common actuating devices therefor, and means whereby the said devices may be adapted to actuate either 13G one number of escapements in one magazine or a different number of eseapen'ients in another magazine, at will.
