Be it known that 1, PAUL ILLEs, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Screens, of which the following is a p ification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to window screens and the primary object of my invention is to provide an adjustable metallic fly screen that can be raised and lowered, similar to a window sash and locked in an adjusted position.

Another object of this invention is to furnish a window frame with novel guides for screens, the guides preventing the screen from being blown out of the window frame or becoming accidentally displaced.

A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and easy to in stall in connection with various kinds of window frames.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame provided with the adjustable screen. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the screen. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a screen guide, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional View of the window screen.

The reference numeral 1 denotes an ordinary window frame and secured to said frame by screws or other fastening means are the apertured lugs 2 of vertical oppositely disposed channel guides 3. These guides are located in the upper part of a window frame and the inner wall of said guides are provided with stops 4 and notches 5, the stops being located adjacent to the apertured lugs 2 of said guides. The stops are simply used in lieu of the notches for the reason that it is impractical to provide notches at the apertured lugs.

Slidably mounted in the guides 3 are the Specification of Letters Patent.

each screen comprising a metallic frame 6 supporting interwoven wire 7. The inner edges of the frames 6 are bent to provide stops 8 that limit the opening movement of said frames and to guide said frames. The top and bottom edge of said frames have lateral flanges 9 and 10, the former having bolts 11 extending through slots 12 provided therefor in the latter. The bolts 11 are retained in position by nuts 13 and the length of the slots 12 is sufficient to permit of said frames being properly adjusted and positioned in the guides 3.

The frames of the window screen, at the upper ends thereof and at the outer edges are enlarged to provide bearing plates let and pivotally connected to said plates, as at 15 are looking pawls 16 provided with outwardly extending handles or knobs 17. Engaging said handles are flat compression springs 18, carried by the flanges 9 and 10 of the screen frames. The locking pawls are adapted to engage the stops 4 or engage in the notches 5 to hold the window screen in a raised or adjusted position.

It is thought that the utility of my invention will be apparent without further description, and I would have it understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. In combination a pair of oppositely disposed channel-shaped guides adapted to be secured to a window frame and provided with stops, a screen formed of adjustable sections and extending into said guides, means arranged at the top and bottom of said sections for adjustably con necting the sections together, each of said sections at its upper end enlarged to provide bearing plates, and spring pressed pawls carried by said bearing plates and adapted to engage the stops of said guides for supporting said screen when vertically adjusted.

2. In combination a pair of oppositely disposed channel-shaped guides adapted to be secured to a window frame and provided with notches and stops, a vertically movable screen extending into said guides and having each upper corner enlarged to proide a bearing plate, spring pressed pawls pivotally connected to said bearing plates and adapted to engage in said notches and further engaging said notches for supporting the screen when adjusted vertically, and handles carried by said pawls to facilitate the shifting thereof to release the screen. 7

8. In combination a pair of oppositely disposed channel-shaped guides provided with apertur-ed lugs for the passage of holdfast devices to secure the guides to a win= dow frame, each of said guides in proximity to certain of its lugs provided with stops and between the stops and lugs formed With notches, a screen slidably mounted in said guides formed of a pair of adjustable sections, said screens extending into said 1 guides, each of said sections at its top formed with an'enlargement to constitute a bearing, and spring pressed pawls carried by the bearings and ada ted to engage in the notches or the stops for supporting the 2 screen in vertically adjustable position.
