Specification of Letters Patent; Pa tentetl (mt. 7,1913,
Application and November 11, 1912 swim to. ates-e.
To all whom it may concern Q v Be it known that I, JAMES H. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi,-,
provide an improved deviceof the character indicated which may be readily and securely fastened to the clothing .in an improved mannen v v The invention 'is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of'a pencil-hplder constructed in accordance. with this invention, the view showing, also,,in section, a fragment of a vest to which the device iss'ecured; Fig. 2, a front elevational view of the device with the pencil-holder attached; Fig.3, a rear elev'ational view of the device; Fig. 4, a sec tional view taken as indicated at'line 4' of Fig. 2; Fig. 5-, arear view of an improved device in modified formya-nd Fig. 6, a side elevation'al view of the device shown in Fig.
5, but with the pencil-holding loop indicated by dotted lines. I
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, thedevice, as there shown, comprises a shank or plate 1; prongs 2 secured to the upper portion of the shank 1'; and an expansible pen oil-holding loop or ring 3 secured to the front side of the shank 1 at the upper end of said shank. 1
In Fig. 1, the device is shown fastened to a plyof cloth 4, which may constitute the front-piece of a vest, for instance, which is provided with a pocket 5 having a front Wall S v The prongs 2 which lie adjacent the rear surface of the shank 1 are preferably formed integral with each other by bending a wire provided. with sharpened extremities into general U-form to provide a web portion 2 and the depending prongs 2. This U-sha'ped fmember has its base or loop end rigidlysecured'to the upper end of the shank 1.. This is preferably accomplished by providing the upper end of the shank l with lateral clenching-lugs 1 and an upper clenchinglug 1 which are curved rearwardly and point of I with vertical slotsor recesses 1".
' vardlyfprojecting they are received.
clenched, respectively, on the upper portions of the prongs 2 and on the webe The lower end of the shank 1 is curved forwardly, as indicated titl and above the curvature the shank is provided The prongs 2 are provided above their points with forbends or" curvatures 2 which register with the slots 1 by which he loop 3 which serves to hold the pen- Cll, pen, or the like, may be of any approved construction. In'the form shown, it is a tubular member having wall's formed of connected, resilient, vertical loops of wire 3*, this being a well known form. of pencil holding loop. The member 3- is securely.
attached, in any approved, manner,to a short plate or slide 6 which is rigidly secured in a guide-portion 7 with which the shank 1 is equipped on its forward side near its upper end; The shank 1 is also preferably provided below the device 3 With a rear'wardly-struck embossment orrib 1 In use, the prongs 2 may be thrust through a ply of the users clothing, and the construction and arrangement are such that the clothing will be firmly gripped between the prongs and the shank '1, thus obviating the danger of loss of thedeviee. This is illustrated in Fig. l, which figure also. serves to "illustrate the convenience with which the device can be located with reference to the pocket "The figure shows the device so located that the pencil-holding loop 3 is dispose-d above the upper margin of the pocket. If desired. the device may be wholly concealed in the pocket, being secured to the rear wall thereof. On the other hand, there is an advantage in locating the projecting loop 3 above the pocket to avoid forming a lump in the pocket. An additional advantage which the improved device possesses is that it overcomes the objection of attaching a device of this character to the front wall of the vest pocket, or to the outer wall of the breast pocket of a coat.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the construction is similar to the construction already described. In the modified construction, 1 represents the shank; 2, the prongs; and 3, the pencil-holding loop or circlet. The prongs form a part of a' U- shape member whose base portion is secured to the upper end of the shank 1 by a up no NEEDLE comrnn'ry,

- with outward curvatures 9 That is,
The slots l are are provided the prongs are curved away from e'achother at the points 9, thus forming enlargements, which, after'being forced through the clotharately-formed metal clip 8. omitted, and the prongs 2 I ing, will serve'to-prevent'the device from becoming accidentally disconnected from the tages 1n use, 'The rigid attachment of the U- shank or plate of clothing.
j A device of the character described is simple, cheap,.and possesses many-advansha-ped member to the upper endof the the device renders it possible to apply the device readily to the'clothing. Also, the rigid attachment of the U- shaped member and its close proximity to the rear surface ofvthe member .1 insure the ;-be understood therefrom.
prising a shank lower extremity,
a Y'e having its upp r portion" comprising a shank having its upper portion equipped with a pencil-holding member and having its lower extremity curved forgripping of the clothing between the piercing-prongs and shank 1.
