Letters Patent No.v107,482, datedJScptemberQO,1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters `Patent and making part of the salme.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. GoULD, of Bos ton, .in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Shield for Carriage- Steps; and I do hereby declare t-hat the following -is a full and exact'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part cf this specilicationv Figure 1 being a side viewof a carriage-step pro- -vided with my improved shield, and
Figure 2, a cent-ral Vertical section of the same.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in both iigures. v Various modes of applying India-rubber shields or coverings to carriage-steps, to prevent slipping and to give more softness and elasticity to'the step, have been devised, but they are all more or less objectionable in different ways, either because they are ,expen-v sive or not easily applicable, removable, or replacable, or because the edges' are exp0sed,or some meta-l, either of the stepl or ofthe shield-fastening, is exposed, so that the shieldis'not fully effectual. My in: ventiou obviates all of these objections; and
It consists in a shield which ts over and around the edge or edges of a metallic 'disk or plate, so that, when the disk or plate is applied to the top of the carriage-step, the lip turned under shall come betweens the disk and the step, and thereby not only be held securely, but give additional elasticity and softness to -the shield.
In the accompanying drawing- Let A represent a carriage-step.
The shield B, of India rubber, or equivalent substance or composition, is (preferably) molded or othern wise formed so that it will cover and t aroundand c, through the middle ofthe carriage-step, and inserting the screw b therein, the disk is lfirmly'held to the step by screwing a unt, cl, upon the screw under the step. The edge a of the shield is thus clamped'v between the disk and step. o r
Thus, not only is a neat-looking shield produced, the edge (or edges) of which is not visible, and no metallic surface is presented on the top of or around it, to slip ou, but the shield is easily attached to any carriage-step, and can vas easily be taken olf .and replaced.
YWhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shield B, having the lip a thereonhtogether with the disk or plate 0, formed and arranged substa-ntially as described, and secured to a carriagestep, A, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified. v Specification signed by me May 25, 1870.
. CHARLES H. GOULD.
