Description
A. MEOKEL.
FILE FOR LETTERS, INVOIOES, AND THE LIKE.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV.14, 1911.
1,74,805. Patented 0ct.7,1913.
UMTED STAILWEENT osmos- AUREL MEoKEL, or. ELBERFELD, GERMANY.
-FILE non Ln'r'rnns, INVOIGES, AND THE trim.
To all whom/1'1 may concern Belt known that I, AUREL MEQKEL, a sub- .ject of the German Emperor, and resident. of
erfeld, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Files for Letters, Invoices, and the like, of which the following is a specification. The present invention relates to a file for filing letters, irvoices and the like.
The file consists of loose leaves joined together in form of a boo-k and secured to a a bottom which has four partly creased flaps,
.of which two or four carry a locking device.
The leaves are indexed on the rlght hand' side'with the letters of the alphabet or with numbers and are joined together at the left side'in' an accordeon-like fashion. The top vation with 2- flaps clos'ed. Fig.
leaf is ruled as a general index.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is exemplified in a constructional form.
Figure 1' is the file seen from above, with all four flaps opened. Fig-2 is a side ele- 3 shows the arrangement of the leaves on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is the file opened in side elevation. Fig. 5 'is the file seen from above astack or plurality of leaves a, which are joined together on one side by a bellows-like joint so as to forma book between the leaves of which letters, invoices and the like may be filed. This joint, as shown in the drawings, is made by folding each leaf parallel to its edge three times, each fold being in the same direction, thus providing an outwardly projecting V-shaped portion hand an inwardly projecting flap 2',
which flap is glued or otherwise suitably attached to the top of the lower adjacent leaf.
In this Way, a flexible or bellows-like joint is provided which permits the leaves to be separated. from one another without losing their parallelism to accommodate a greater or less number ofpapers filed between said leaves. The maximum separation of the leaves which may thus 'behad is, of Course. determined by the-width of the two parts of the V-shaped portion 71. As the leaves separate from one titlulihfl'. this V-shaped portion opens u until finally its parts are substantially ahned vertically with one another.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
The leaves are indexed in the usual manner Patented Oct. 7, 1913. Application filed November 14, 191-1. Serial No. 660,277. I
with the letters of the alphabet and the top leaf is ruled with lines 1 for indexing purposes. The lowermost leaf (1 is attached to a relatively stiffer bottom Z), which may be made in one or several pieces and is provided with flaps c at the four sides thereof, which flaps are folded over the stack in opposite pairs so as to constitute with the bot,- tom 1) a cover for said stack. Instead of .havingthese flaps c on all four sides, they may be used only on one pair of opposite sides. To hold the flaps in place, when closed, and the file locked, a button d is provided'on one flap while the opposite flap is provided with cooperating holes a, which holes end in narrower slots through which said button cannot pass. Or locking members, as described, may be placed on both pairs of opposite flaps where four flaps are used. At' the places where the button and the holes are arranged, the flaps are reinforced by pieces of a stronger material f pasted under them.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a file for letters or the like comprising a stack of leaves, each leaf having an edge folded parallel to itself more than twice and so as to provide an inwardly pro ecting fiap which flap is attached to the top of the lower adjacent leaf so that the leaves may be separated without losing their parallelism, a relatively'stifi' bottom for said stack provided with a partially creased flap at each of the four sides thereof, said flaps being adapted to fold over so as to constitute, with said bottom, a cover for said stack, and locking devices attached to two opposite flaps for holding said cover closed.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a file for letters and the like comprising a stack of leaves, flexible bellows-like joints between said leaves for attaching them to one another, each joint being formed by folding tin: edge of a given leaf parallel to itself and in the same direction three times so as to provide an inwardly projecting flap, which flap is attached to the top edge of the lower adjacent leaf so that the leaves may be separated without losing their parallelism, a
, of the four sides thereof, said flaps being adapted to fold'vover so as to constitute, with said bottom, a cover for said stack, and locking devices attached to two opposite flaps for holding said cover closed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
