do hereby declare the following to be a4 t'ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art: to which it appertains to make .and use the saine. v l
The' invention relates to thread spools ot the type in which the spool heads are provided with inclined or conical thread bearing surfaces, and its object is to provide a light and inexpensive spool which possesses great strength and durability.
To this end theinvention consists o the `features ot' construction and combinations otl parts here'iiialter described and claimed.
The invention will be readily understood trom an inspectionr ot the accompanying drawings and the following detaileddescription of the spoolillustrated therein.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal section through a thread spool ein bodying,` the .invention in its preferred torln, and Fig. 2 is an end view ot' the spool.
Asshown the. spool is pro-vided with a eentral tube l which may be conveniently manufactured Atrom paper, tiber or analogous inaterial. Surrounding the tube 1 is the cylindrical barrel 2 and the inclined head2-l which are formed integral with the barrel. rlfhe barrel and integrally connected l fads are t'ormed by nioll'ling about the tube l a conipound which, when it hardens, presents a smooth and mrvielding surt'aee tor supportupon the spool. By forming the barrel and heads ot' the spool i'rom molded material true and accurate thread engaging` surt'aces are provided which are unbroken by Ijoints which are .li able to open or work loose under atinos pheric changes and variations in temperature. and into which the thread is liable to it upon the spool, especially when wound under comparatively heavy tension.'
ln order that the spool may be as light as practicable, the heads C3 are molded in the forni ot comparatively thin conical llang'es extending from the ends of the ban rel portion 2 ot the spool. These end tlanfges are subjected to' heavy pressure when the lthread is wound upon the spool, especially when it is wound under comparatively heavy tension, and to support and strengthen the heads so that. they may etl'ectively withstand suoli pressure, end disks et are titled within the head flanges. '.lhese disks not only strengthen and support the heads against the pressure to which they are subjected, but
alsoy furnish itat plain surfaces at the ends of the spool and close the cavities which would otherwise be present. owing to the shape oi the head ttanges $3.
be conveniently `t'ormed o't liber, hardencd paper board orothersuitable material.
rthe ends of the inner tube l project beyond the barrel portion 2 ot the spool, and are arranged to abut against the inner suriace ot' the heads l. 'lhe heads are secured in position at the ends ot the spool by securing plugs which tit within the. tube l and are provided with conical t'langes o litting within similar holes in the heads -fl and retaining them against the endsl ot.l the tube l and the inner surface ol" the head tlanges 3. its shown. the plugs comprise hardened paper or fiber tubes i' within which are composition cores 8 niolded within the tubes. and provided at their centers' with cylindrical bearing surfaces t) lfor supportin; the spool. 'l`he plugs are cemented or otherwise secured to the inner surface ol the tubel and to the end disks et.
While it is preferred to employ die speA cilic construction and arrangement ot parts shown and described, it will be understood that this instruction and arrangement' is not essential except so t'ar as set Ytorth in the claims, and may be varied and moditied without departing t'roni the broader 'Features ot' the invention.
llavingexplained the nature and object ot the invention, and specifically described one l`orni ot spool in which it may be .anbodied, what is claimed is?d v1. A thread spool comprising an inner tube, a barrel and conical head tlanges surroundingY the tube. end disks tilting within the head flanges, and plugs securingthe disks to the ends ot' the inner tube.
