PAUL OTTO BOESKE, OE MANTON, RHODE ISLAND.
AIR-REGULATOR FOR ORG-ANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. so, 1913.
Application filed July 10, 1912. Serial No. 708,614.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL O. BOESKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manton, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air-Regulators for Organs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air regulators for pipe organs and the like, the object in view being to provide means for automatically throwing the air pump out of operation, when the bellows are filled, thereby doing away with the usual safety valve now employed on bellows, and the constant disagreeable noise which has been found annoying to choirs and persons located adjacent to the mechanism of the organ.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mechanism for throwing the air pump into and out of operation. Fig. 2 Fig. 3 is a detail view of the slotted arm.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the crank shaft of the air pump to be used in connection with organs for filling the bellows.
In carrying out this invention, fast and through the eye 5 of a slidable belt shifting.
member 6 mounted to slide in one or more bearings 7, as shown, so as to carry the belt either on the fast or loose pulley, and alternately from one pulley to the other.
8 designates a bell crank lever which is fulcrumed, at 9, on a suitable pin or stud supported in any convenient way, said lever comprising a short arm 10 which is terminally connected by a pivot joint to the adjacent end of the belt shifting member, as shown. The longer arm 11 of said lever is actuated by an arm 12 securedto the movable side 13 of the bellows, so as to rise and fall therewith. Intermediate its ends, the said arm is provided with a semi-circular oflset 14 to dodge the crank shaft 1, and at its outer extremity, said lever is provided with an upstanding extension 15, in which is formed a vertical longitudinal slot 16, in which the longer arm of the bell crank lever is received.
Thelength of the slot 16 is adjustable by means of a stop 17, extending across the slot and made adjustable up and down by providing the opposite portions of the extension with openings to receive the stop, which may be in the form of a bolt, screw, or pin.
The idea of rendering the stop 17 adjustable is to regulate the point at which the arm carried by the bellows will begin to act on the longer arm of the bell crank lever, for the purpose of shifting the belt from the fast pulley onto the loose pulley.
It will now be seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that as the bellows fills, the arm carried thereby will move upward, and when the stop 17 comes into contact with the bell crank lever, the latter will be swung on its fulcrum, thereby operating the belt shifting element and throwing the driving belt from the fast pulley onto the loose pulley, thereby terminating automatically the operation of the crank shaft of the pump. As soon as the air begins to exhaust from the bellows, the belt shifting element will, in the same manner and by the same means, return the belt from the loose pulley to the fast pulley, thereby again throwing the pump into operation. By the mechanism described, it is practicable to do away with the usual safety valve now in common use'on bellows at the same time dispensing with the disagreeable noise accompanying the use of such device.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a bellows, of fast and loose pulleys on the crank shaft of the air pump, a belt passing around said pulleys, an arm projecting from the movable side of the bellows and having aslotted extension formed with a longitudinal series of holes, a belt shifting member, a lever connected to said member and passing through the slotted extension of the arm of the bellows, and a stop insertible in any of said holes. I
2. The combination with a bellows, of fast and loose pulleys on the crank shaft of the air pump, a belt passing around said pulleys, an arm projecting from the movable side of the bellows and provided with a slot, a belt shifting member, a lever connected to In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two wltnesses.
PAUL OTTO BOESKE.
said member and passing through said slot, Vitnes sesf and a stop extendlng across the said slot and RALPH KQRNGIEBEL, made adgustable lengthwise of the same. EVA L. PIKE.
