REFRIGERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 30, 1913.
Application led November 29, 1912. Serial No. 4734,188.
To all whom t may concern Y Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. PARK,
M. D., acitizen of the .United States, residing at Rockford, inV the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have'invented' certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerators; and I 'do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchV as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to portable receptacles for containing samples of milk collected during a tour of inspection of a health officer or a like person.
The invention consists in an outer receptacle within which is contained requisites for the sanitary reception and storage of samples of milk collected for the purpose of chemical or bacteriological examinations.
The invention further consists in means for refrigerating the articles stored in the receptacle, whereby chemical action within the milk is prevented.
The invention further consists in novel details' of construction which will be hereinafter more clearly set forth in the following specication and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred form of my invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view partly broken away of my improved apparatus, and, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the inner refrigerator.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates an outer casing having a hinged cover 2 carrying a suitable handle 3 to facilitate transportation. Within the casing 1, upon the opposite longitudinal sides thereof, are provided strips f1 for supporting in spaced relation in the casing, a refrigerating compartment 5. At one end of the casing 1 is left sufficientspace for analcohol lamp 6 and the two receptacles 7 and 8, for a purpose which will be hereinafter more clearly set forth. The refrigerating compartment 5 is preferably formed rectangular in shape with an open upper end adapted to be closed by ahollow cover 9, hinged at one end to the end wall of the compartment. Adjacent the bottom of the interior surface of the side walls is secured a plurality of bracket arms 10, vadapted to support in spaced relation from the ioor of the compartment, a tray plurality 11, having an upwardlyextending handle 12 secured Vcentrally thereof. The space between the tray 11 and the floor of the compartment 5 is adapted to be filled with ice, as shown. Arranged upon the tray11 is a of sample containing bottles 13 having sanitary coverslfl secured thereover by means of cords or the like 15. The hollow. vcover 9 of the refrigerating compartment .is provided with longitudinal side and bottom walls, a perforate hinged end 16, and a hinged door 17 at the opposite end, normally held in closed position by the spring 18. To facilitate drainage of the melted ice contained in the hollow cover 9, the bottom of said compartment is inclined toward the hinged end of the compartment and formed of sufiicient length so as to pro-ject into a drain passage 19 formed at the end of the compartment by means of the partition 20.
On collecting a sample of milk, the operator removes the cover from the bottle and passes the flame from the alcohol lamp 6 over the mouth of the bottle to thoroughly sterilize the latter. The sample of milk is then poured into the sterile bottle and the paper tied over the neck of the bottle with the string, as before, an inner stopper being disposed in the mouth of the bottle before the outer cover 14; is placed thereover if such precaution is thought necessary. The receptacle 7 `is employed for containing fuel for the lamp 6 and the receptacle 8 is for the purpose of containing sterile gauze to be used in cleaning the bottles or the thermometer employed for taking the temperature of the mill The water resulting from the melting of ice within the refrigerating compartment 5 may be drawn off, at convenient times, by opening the valve in cock 21 connected to .the lower portion of the compartment. The bottom of the casing 1 is provided with an opening fitted with a funnel 22 into which the water discharged from the cock 21 Hows, and is emptied outside of the casing.
From the foregoing, lit will be seen that I have provided an efficient and convenient means, and also an entirely sanitary one, for collecting and storing samples of milk until such time when it is convenient to make tests or examinations thereof.
What I claim is 1. The herein described refrigerator comprising a casing, a hollow cover hinged thereto, thebottom of said cover being inclined from the free to the hinged end, a perforate end Wall for the hinged end of said hollow cover, and a door hinged to the free end of said cover.
2. The herein described refrigerator oomprising a easing,y a hollow cover hinged thereto, a partition in the end of said cas-V ing forming a passage between the end wall of said Casing and said partition, the bottom of said hollow Cover being inclined from the free to the hinged end thereof and the. lowermost end thereof extending into said pas sage, and a perforate end in the hinged. end of said cover. v
3 The herein described refrigerator comprising a casing, a hollow cover hinged thereto, the bottom of said coverfbeing inclined from the free to the hin ged end thereof, a' door hinged to the free end of said covena partition in said easing forming a of said casing, the loWermost end of the botwithin said passage, and a removable tray support above the bottom of said' casing.
In testimony whereof I. have Signed myV name to this specification in the presence of two subsribing witnesses.
