AUGUST w. nnanrnnunm or oHIcAGo, ILLINOIS, AssIGNoR'To AMnRIcAN oAItANn FOUNDRY COMPANY, or sin. otus, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
' all whom, it may concern I Beit known that I, AUGUST LQHART- is-Anna, a citizen'of'the United States, re-
1 siding at Chicago, Illinois, have invented. a j c rt-am: new and useful Improvement j in Deck-Sash Pivot and Latches, of whichthe fol-low'ing isja 'full,'fclear, and exact description,,such' as will-enable others skilled in the art-m1 which it .appertains' to make and use the same',='reference being had to the accompanyingrawings, forming partof this 'fspeci'fication, in which fF'gure-fll i s aperspective view ofaportion'of arailway car deck showinga deck with my improved pivoting and latching device. Fig.2 is an enlarged vertical section sash or window, the same being provided taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig, 3 is a front elevational view of the parts seen. looking in the direction indicated by the arrow '3 in Fig. 2. Fig.v 4
i is'afdetail sectional View of a modified form of the latch.
[This invention relates generally to the Isashes or windows in thedecks of railway passenger cars, and more particularly to a the pivoting and latching means for said sashes.
It: is essential, for ventilation purposes {that the deck sash be arranged so as to be 1 readily shifted intoan open position, and
A \tofthis end-pairsof hinge la'tes are ar- .,rangedon theqen-ds of the andheld at different pointssi open position, I propose to provide notch'ed quadrant plates on the do sash,- the points of which-pawls are adapted to engage in the-notches in the quadrant plates, thereby firmly holding the deck sash 1n itsadjusted-position.
One- 0f the principal objects ofmy invention isto provide a quadrant plate having notches on both side faces along" one edge,
' and thus the quadrant plate is interchangeeck sash and tionof said upon the-adjacent deck posts, and in order to permit the deck sash to be re dily opened posts,- and to arrange spring-held pawls onbrackets carried by the DECK-SASH P vo'r AND LATCH.
'for use, and which permits the sash" to be rea ily shifted from one position to another. To the above purposes my invention con-. sists in certain novel features of construction and, arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed. i

ing drawings: l-qdesignates the deck roof,
2. the deck posts and 3 the deck sash which isarranged in the usual manner between the posts 2. Fixed in any suitable manner to'the lower portions of the posts 2 and projecting. .outwardlytherefrom are quadrant plates 4,
and formed on or fixed .to the side faces of these plates along the curved edges thereof are ribs or flanges 5' in which are formed notches 6,'""the same being suitably spaced apart. Fixed to the side portions of the deck sash 3 and projecting outwardly therefrom at points immediately adjacent to the plates 4 are brackets which are rovided with vertically disposed plates 8., *ormed. on each plate isa pair of cars 9, and pivotallymounted upon a pin 10 seated in said ears is a pawl 11 provided on'its upper endwith'a tooth 12 which is adapted to engage in the notches 6. The up- 1 per portion of the plate 8 is provided with an openlng 13 to accommodate the tooth 12.
Formed integral with the lower portion of :thepawl 11' is a depending'lip 14, and interposed between this lip and the lower porplate8 is a small compression spring 151 Formed onor fixed to the bracket 7 is an outwardly projecting pin or trunnion 16 which is mounted for rotation in a suitable hearing formed in the corresponding plate 4-.
When the deck sash is closed the teeth 12 on the pawls 11 engage in a corresponding pair of-the notches 6 and said pawls maintain their positions by the power stored in the springs 15. When it is desired to open the deck sash the upper portion on the inside thereof is engaged and pulled inwardly with suflicient power to overcome the resistance offered by the springs 15, and as a result, the teeth 12 ride out of the notches in which they have been engaged, and said 7, the outer ends of teeth ride along the surface of the ribs or flanges 5 until they drop into the succeedin pairs of notches, and thus the deck sash W1 be firmly held in open position. The spaced notches 6 which are engaged by the teeth or points of the pawls -11- provide means whereby the deck sash may be held openat differentdegrees In the modified construction shown in Fig. 4 a torsionally bent spring 15 is positioned on the pivot pin 10, one end of which spring bears against the plate 8 and the opposite end against the depending lip 14:.
A deck sash pivot and latch of my improved construction is comparatively simple, is composed of few parts which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and assembled, permits the deck sash to be readily closed or swung into open position and efl'ectually' holds said sash after movement in either direction.
By forming notches on both side faces of the quadrant plates the same can be interchangeably used at the ends of the sash, thus doing away with the necessity of forming said plates in rights and lefts.
It will be readily understood that, minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved deck sash pivot and latch'can bemade and sub stituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is setforth in theappended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a deck sash and deck post, of anmember fixed 'to the deck post, which member is provided with a series of notches in its side face, of a bracket fixed to the deck sash and pivotally connected to the first mentioned member, a plate on the outer end of the bracket, which plate is provided with an opening, and a spring-pressed pawl pivotallym ounted on the plate, the point of which pawl passes through the opening in said plate to engage the notches in the side face of the first mentioned member.
2. The combination with a deck sash and deck posts, of interchangeable quadrant plates fixed to the deck posts, which quadrant plates are provided with notches in their side faces, brackets fixed to the deck sash adjacentto the quadrantplates, trunnions on said brackets which operate in bearings in the quadrant plates, plates integral with the brackets, which plates are provided with openings, and spring-pressed restraining pawls on said last mentioned plates, the points of which pawls pass through the openings in said plates to engage the notches in the quadrant plates for holding the deck sash in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of twowitnesses, this 18th day of September, 1912.
