Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ULYSSES s. HENDERSON AND VADOLPH F. scHRAMM, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, Assmuons,
TO THE E. M. HULSE COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
8011A OR DAVENPORT BED.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented se t. 23, 1o 13.
Application filed May 19, 1913. Serial No. 768,451.
- 1,061,777, dated May13 1913, issued upon the application of William A. Pease, and has for its object to provide improved means for moving the back out of osition to interfere with the operation of tie seat and bed.
The invention is embodied in the construction herein shown and described, the features of novelty being pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings forming part hereofFigure 1 is a view in elevation of the end of the structure with the .end
member or standard removed so as to expose the niechanlsnp In this view the bed is shown as opened. Fig. 2 15 a similar view showing the bed-closed.
As usual in such structure 11 designates the end members or main supporting standards of which thereare two, between which is suitably secured and supported the base boxer stationary frame 10. To the forward upper corner of the base box or frame 10 is hinged at 12 the seat frame 12.
spectively the-inner, outer and middle sec The characters-13; 14 and 15 designate rctions of the folding bed frame which are 7 operated by suitable devices connected with the seat frame substantially as shown in the patent hereinbefore referred to and require no description herein because they do not constitute an invention.
Pivoted at 22 onthe end-of the base or. frame 10'is a lever21. having at the extremity "of its. upper arm a lateral inwardly extending bearing-to acton the edge of the essential part of the present seat,"said bearing being indicated herein by broken lines at 2 3 (but shown in detail in said former patent) and said lever also having connecte -with the rising seat.
with its lower end one end of a strong coiled spring 24 that has its other end connected to an eye 25 secured in the rear wall of thebase box or frame. When the seat frame is closed the edge of the end of the frame depresses the upper arm of the lever 21 and stretches the spring thereby stor ng powerfor actuating said lever to as sist 1n raising the seat when the bed is to be v.opened all as explained in said former patent.
In the present invention the back 9 is pivoted at its upper part to swing between the ends 11 on an axis at 9 and is provided at its lower corner with a slotted member 8 fixed thereto. Pivoted at 7 on the end of the box 10 is a lever 7having at one end a pin at 7 to engage the slotted member 8, and hinged at the other end at 7 to one end of an arm 6 pivoted at 6" on the lever 21. When, therefore, the seat is raised to open the bed the lever 21, being actuated by the spring, draws up the arm 6 and throws down the upper arm of the lever 7 thereby throwing rearward the lower portion of the back and removing it from position to interfere at all Because of the construction shown the movement of the back is very slight and so as not to be objectionable. l urthermore the seat is held in substantially this rearward position until the seat is nearly closed, it being observed that the op; erating parts cause only slight movement at the back.
The mechanism described can be and preferably will be' inall respects the same at each end of the sofa or davenport bed.
not broadly claimsuch.
