ACETYLENE-GAS Specification of Letters Intent,
.ln tented Sept. 23, i1 913.
Application filed November 29, 1912. Eermi No. 734.],99.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W oLroANo Gscnwimnman, a citizen of the United States, residing at (.lleato-n, in the county of l\[uhlenberg and State of Kentucky, have invented new and Improvements in rtcetylene-Gz'ls Lamps, of which the following is a specili-- cation.
This invention. relates to acetylene gas lamps, the object in view being to provide a lamp of the characttn' referred to, especially designed for the use of miners, the said lamp being accessible in all of its parts and capable of being easily and quickly put together, after being: tilled, and also cn'lbodylug novel means for coupling the sections of the lamp together, and at the same time sup nn-tirethe lamp as a whole upon the hat or helmet of the minor.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, cornbinatimi and arrangement; 01'' parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the itttnlll hlllylHQ drawings, and pointed out in, the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l. is a perspective view of the complete lamp. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same. Fig". 3 is a top plan view thereof. Field; a side clevation of th lamp, showing the two sections locked together. Fin. 5 is; a similar View, showing the lock tl'lrovm back. I
The miuers lamp contemplated in this in vention comprises a bottom section 1, and a top section 2, said sections being substantially square in cross section and of approximately equal size.
The bottom section 1. forms a single compartment in itself, and is adapted to receive the carbid, said bottom section 1 being open at the top when detached from-the top section, and the top section forming a closure or cover therefor. "he bottom section is also provided with the outwardly projecting keepers or projections 3 at opposite sides thereof, for a purpose which Will hereinafter a p p ca 1. I
The top section 2 is divided oti' nteriorly to iform a gas chamliier l in the bot! rthercof, the bottom of said gas chamber being: pei-l mated. as shown at 5, to admit the gas generated in the carlnd holding section 1. A burner tube 6 communicates with the gas chamber referred to, and provided with a suitable burner tip 7, back of which is arranged a reflector 8 attached to the top soction, as shown.
l rojccting downward from the Water com mrtment or chamber located directly over the gas chamber is a guide tube 9, in which mounted the stem 10 of a valve 10',
the stem of which projects up through the top wa ll of the upper section 2, and pro vided at its upper end with a cross head ll, the ends of whichare formed into hooks 12. These hooks 12 are adapted, when the stem is pushed dow nvard, to interlock with an other stationary crosshead or keeper 13 hearing a fixed relation to the top section 2. When these two cross heads are interlocked, in the manner illustrated, the valve is closed, thereby muting oh the llow of water from the water chamber into the carbid chamber. l'iy partially revolving the stem of the 'alve by means ol. the cross head thereon, the latter may be thrown out of interlocked engagement with the fixed cross head or keeper and drawn upward, thereby allowing the water to How through the tube into the carbid chamber, until. a sufiicient amount of gas has been generated for the nuposes ol the miner.
il ldesignates a plug for closing the filling aperture 1.5 in the top of the upper Section 2.
In order to fasten the two sections of the lamp together, and at the same time provide for supporting the lamp as a whole on the minefis hat or helmet, a forked lever 15 is provided, the arms of said forked lever straddlinp the top section of the lamp and being pivotally connected thereto at 16. To the central portion or crown of the forked lever is attached a hator l'iclmct-engaging hook 17, the point of which extends dowir ward, said hook also acting as a handle for coupling or uncoupling the two sections of the lamp.
Iivotally connected to the oppositelylying arms of the forked lever are coupling hooks 18, the lower hooked ends of which are adapted to engage under the keepers or projections at opposite sides of the 'cttom section 1 of the lamp.
By placing the hooks 18 in engagement with the keepers on the bottom section of the lamp, and then rocking the forked lever by means of the combined hook and handle, the two sections of the lamp are drawn tiohtly together and rigidly held, aftcr which the ,or recharging the acetylene lamp,
hook on the crown of the lever may be inserted in the rim of the hat or helmet.
An emergency oil burner 19 is inserted in a compartment especially provided therefor in the top section of the lamp, said pocket being water-proof, so as to exclude the water contained in the upper chamber of the top' section. This emergency lamp is adapted to be filled with oil, and embodies a wick 20, a filling cap 21, and a hook 2% adapting said emergency burner to be applied to the miners hat, while he is engaged inrefilling The emergency burner is wholly contained within the plane of the top section of the lamp,
' and does not interfere withthe use thereof in any way.
23 designates a gasket forming a tight joint between the upper and lower sections of the lamp. v
. The plug 14 and the cap 21 are attached Gopies of this patent may be obtained for pivotally attached thereto, a supporting 30 hook projecting from the crown of the fork, coupling hooks pivotally connected to the side arms of the forked lever, and projec tions on the bottom section engaged by said couplinghgoks.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
