RICHARD POPP, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
AUTOMATIC ADVERTISING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 17, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Rieimnn Pore, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, De mrtment of the Seine, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Advertising Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an automatic advertising apparatus.
This apparatus comprises a band carrying advertisements which passes over two driving drums and is fixed to two other drums from which it is wound and unwound alternately. These drums are operated by one and the same mechanism, which imparts to the said band an intern'iittent motion so as to insure the regular succession of the advertisements allowing their reading. In order to produce this intermittent motion the operating mechanism comprises a Mab tese cross, which is turned at equal intervals and acts on the drums carrying the band. The apparatus, moreover, comprises a reversing g ar which, at the end of the course, reverses the operating mechanism.
In the accompanying d'awings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of an apparatus in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of such apparatus. Fig. 3 shows a modification of the operating mechanism. Fig. 1 is a plan of the same.
The apparatus is operated by a driving shaft 1 upon which is slidable a sleeve 2 carrying two bevel- wheels 3, 3 According to the position of the sleeve 2 one or the other of these bevel wheels meshes with a bevel wheel l keyed on the shaft 6. The displacement of the sleeve 2 is effected by means of a fork 7 pivoted at 50. An arm 51 attached to this fork, carries a peg or pin 52 projecting into a groove in a screw nut 01' traveler S on the screw spindle 21. The groove in the traveler forms a shoulder at each end thereof adapted to engage the pin 52. The screw spindle receives its rotation from the shaft 6 by means of the two pinions 22 and 23. The fork 7 is held in each of its end positions by means of a spring 9 which is fastened at one end to the fork and at the other to the frame 10.
On the shaft 6 is keyed a disk 5 carrying a peg or pin 24. This latter engages suc- Patented Sept. 23,1913.
Serial No. 709,908.
cessively the grooves of a hlaltese cross 26 firmly connected with a pinion 27 engaging a pinion 28 keyed on the shaft 29 of a drum 12. This shaft 25) operates by means of the bevelavheels 3t) and ill a shaft 32 which imparts its rotation by means of a suitable bevelgearing to a. drum 12 similar to drum 12. The band 19 carrying the advertisements passes over the drums 12 and 12 provided with teeth it) and alt) respectively, and the ends of the said band are wound or rolled up on or wound or rolled off from the two drums 11 and 11 which are set in motion by means of bevel wheels similar to those operating the drums 12 and 12 In order to compensate the variations of diameter of the roll formed by the band on the drums l1 and 11 each of these drums is connected with its driving shaft by means of springs 13 and '13 respectively.
The working of the apparatus is as fol lows: The fork 7 being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the main driving shaft 1 rotates by means of the bevel gear 3, 1 the shaft (3. The peg 21 of the disk 5 turns the Maltese cross 26 for a quarter of a circle which corresponds to a certain length of the band. During the same time, owing to the transmission of motion effected by means of the shaft 32, the drums 11, 11 12 and 12 rotate in the same direction. As all the drums are operated or driven by the same driving mechanism the band is not. submitted or exposed to any undue strain or effort and will therefore not be distended. After the Maltese cross has been turned for 90, the pe 2-1 and the cross disengage; the latter and the drums remain at rest, while the former performs an idle course. During the rotation of the shaft (5, the screw spindle 21 is rotated by means of the pinions 22, 23 whereby a lateral motion is imparted to the nut S. \Vhen this nut is near one end of its course one of the shoulders thereon will engage the pin 52 and thereby shift the fork 7. Under the action of the spring 9 the fork 7 is rocked; the bevel wheel 3 disengaged and the bevel wheel 3 thrown into gear with the bevel wheel l: whereby the rotation of the shaft (5 is reversed. (lonscquently the direction of motion of the l\laltese cross and of the drums ill, 11 12, 12" is likewise reversed. The dimensions of the transmission organs or elements are chosen in such a manner that the number of revolutions of the disk 5 effected in either direction corresponds to the complete unwinding or unrolling of the band 19.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate-a slightly modified construction of the driving mechanism. The main driving shaft 1 carries, in this instance, an endless thread or worm 25 meshing with a worm wheel 33 which drives by means of a gearing 34, 35, 36 and 37, a crown-wheel 38. Above the latter is arranged a sleeve 41 provided with two pinions 39, 39 The said sleeve rotates with its shaft 6 but is capable of being displaced thereon in longitudinal direction. The dis placement of the sleeve 41 is effected by means of a fork 42 pivotally jointed at 43 to the frame and at 44 to an arm 45 the free extremity of which is engaged between two pegs or pins 46 fixed to the frame. The arm 45 and the fork 42 are connected by a spring 47 which secures the sleeve 41 in each of its end positions. The fork is displaced by a screw nut 8 mounted on a screw spindle 21, operated as in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by pinions 22, 23. The transmission of the rotation of the shaft 6 to the drums is effected in the same manner as before.
The apparatus forming the subject matter of the invention affords the advantage that its operation and function is very reliable and its construction simple and economical.
The apparatus may advantageously be used in connection with cabs and carriages in which case the main driving shaft may be operated preferably by the flexible shaft actuated by one of the wheels of the carriage. The apparatus may also be operated by means of a clockwork or any other suitable driving means (electric motor for eX ample).
I claim:
1. An advertising apparatus comprising winding rollers, guide rollers, a web associing said winding rollers and said radially directed arms.
2. An advertising apparatus comprising winding rollers, guide rollers, a web associated with said winding and guide rollers, means to actuate one of said rollers, direct mechanical connections between the shafts of all of said rollers to actuate the same simultaneously, radially directed arms secured to the shaft of the winding rollers, and springs connecting said winding rollers with said radially directed arms.
3. An advertising apparatus comprising winding rollers, guide rollers, mechanical means for driving all of said rollers, a reversing mechanism associated with the driving means comprising a shiftable reversing sleeve, a pivoted lever having connection with said sleeve, means to actuate said lever comprising a worm shaft, a traveler adapted to be shifted longitudinally of and by the worm shaft, said traveler provided with shoulders thereon and said lever adapted to be engaged by said shoulders on the traveler to shift the reversing sleeve, a second lever pivotally connected to said firstnamed lever and directed away therefrom, means to guide the free end of said second lever, and resilient means connecting the opposite ends of said levers whereby said sleeve is normally held in its extreme shifted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of. two witnesses.
