My ,invention relates to a controlling meansrfor fluid pressure operated machines, having reference particularly to machines, such as laundry presses, embodying a mov- .able bedwhich is actuated by fluid pressure,
' and it has for its object the provision of a simple and convenientlyarrangcd mechamsm by which the operator can admit 0r eX- haust pressure to or from the pressure cylinder.
A further lobject of my invention consists in providing a construction by which. a single actuating device serves to alternately admit and exhaust .pressure to and from the pressure cylinder upon successive operations.
To these and other ends the invention con sists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinaftermore fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the present embodiment, I have shown the invention in its application to a laundry press in which 1 designates the frame of the machine, while 2 is the operating member, or
standard, which may be connected to a movable bed of the press, as usual in this type of machinery. The operating member 2 1s connected to the links 3 which are in turn pivotally connected to the link 4, mounted on the 'pivotal support 5. The toggle joint formed by the links 3 and 4 coperates with the connecting rod.6 the latter beinfr connected to the iston 7 which travels 1n the pressure cylin( er 8. The cylinder'8is provided with extensions 9 whichY are pivotally mounted on the beforementioned support 5, and it also carries a downwardly extendin abutment 10 having a post l1 'threade therein and arranged toY adjustably engage the base 12. Upwardly extending arms 13 are provided to receive the adjustable posts.

The admission and exhaustof fluid pressure to and from the cylinder is controlled through the valve casin 15 which is connected with the cylinder y means" of a passage 16, and with the atmosphere by means of the port 17. A pipe 18 connects with the valve casing 15 and is supplied with steam or other Huid under pressure in any convenient` manner. Arranged within the valve casing is the rotary valve 19 provided with inlet ports 20 which extend therethrough, and exhaust ports 21, each adapted to connect the passage 16 with the exhaust port 17, as shown in Fig. 5. The inlet ports 20 are oppositely disposed, and the exhaust ports 21 are also oppositely disposed, being arranged between the inlet ports, as shown in Fig, 8. By this arrangement, as the'valve is actuated, the inleta-nd exhaust ports are alternately registered with the passage 16 leading to thecylinder, causing the operatingmember 2 to be suc- Cessively raised and lowered. In order to effect thesuccessive movements of the valve by a single actuating member, I mount said valve on the rod 22, the latter Carrying a ratchet wheel 23. Also mounted on said rod 22 is an arm 24 which carries the spring controlled pawl 25 arranged to engage the ratchet wheel 23. I claim as my invention: 1.
