JAMES W, HUNTOON, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
Letters Paten-tNo. 107,37 9, elated September 13, 1870.
IMPROVEMEN T IN HORSE-POWERS.
The Schedule referred to in these LettexsPatent and making parl: of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J Mns W. HUN'rooN, of Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alahama, llave nventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Powers; and I do herebydeclare that the following 'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being lhad to the accompanying drawing and tothe lettersof reference marked'thereon, which form apart of this specification.
'The natureofmy invention consists in the construction -and arrangement of a horse-power, and its combination, upon oneframe or truck, with aI gininill, as will lbe hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appert-ains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed draw-I wheels, B B, andhavng at one end a .gin-stand, 0,.
placed upon' it.
At theether end of the frame the upright wooden king-postl) has its lower bearing, while kthe upper bearing of said Vpost maybe in an upright frame, E, elected onthe bed-frame A, if it is intended to have the machine movable. But if the machine is to bestationary in a building, this upper bearing may be iu the timbers of the floor to the gin-house, or any building under which it is used.
G isthe sweep attached to the upperjend of the post D.
The main wheel H is attached at the lower end of the kiugfpost D. This position of the main wheel h has several advantages: a more rm and steady ac tion, less liability of getting out of order, and less exense. p This mai-n wheel gears with a pinion, a, on the shaft b, which shaft carries a large cog-wheel, I.
This wheel gears with another pinion, d, upon ashaft, e, which also carries a large cog-wheel, J. l
' This last cog-wheel gears with a pinion, f, upon the shaft of the cottongiu,a11d gives it a rapid rotary motion.
j The shafts b and e have their. bearings in journalboxes h h, which are adjusted .upon standards KKin the following manner:
The standards K K are firmly secured -to the bedi frame A, and are slotted vertically1 at their upper ends, as shown in fig. 1v. On one-side these standards are .provided with ratehet-teeth, as may be seen in lig-2.
The base ot' each of the journal boxes h his formed in the shape of a bar, provided with ratchetteeth ou ,its inner side, and then secured to the toothed 'standard by means of bolts, t, and nuts, thebolts'passing through theslottedportions of-tlie-standards..
By these'means the bearings for the shafts b and e may be firmly adjusted at any height desired.`
Having thus fully described my invention,
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let'- ters Patent, isf The slotted and toothed standards K K, in combination with toothed journal-boxes h h, and bolts e' f2, when used in connection with a horsepower, substantially as described.
In testimony .that I claim the foregoingfas my own, f
I aix my signature in presenceof twowitnesses.
'JAMES W. HUNTOON. Witnesses:
