Be it known that I, KARL KELLER, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Romanshornerstrasse, Arbon, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embroidering-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a iull, clear, and exact description ol the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to a mechanism for impelling the shuttles and needles of embroidering machines by means of two cams mounted on the driving shaft.
According to my invention a bell-crank lever mounted to rock about a fixed axle and attached to a connecting rod is positively rocked in such manner, that the motion in one direction is produced by the, action of one of the cams on one arm ot the bell-crank lever and the motion in the opposite direction by the action of the second cam on the second arm of the bellcrank lever. Two such bell-crank levers are pro vided for impelling a connecting link which itself is used to vary the stitch in a wellknown manner.
As compared with the mechanisms which hitherto have been proposed for this pur pose, the mechanism according to this invention possesses the advantage, that the regulation of the movements of the needles and shuttles becomes very easy while hitherto the regulation could be performed only by very complicated means. Moreover by the use of the eonnectingdink a very perfect variation of the stitch is obtained.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention by way of example.
Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 a horizontal section and Fig. 8 a front view of the same. Fig. 11 is a plan view showing parts of Fig. 1.
Two pairs of cams 3, 4, 5, 6 are mounted on the driving shaft 1, the pairs of cams being of different curvature. Two pairs of crank- levers 7, 8 and 9, 10 are mounted on the frame 2 of the embroidering machine and provided with rolls 11, 12, 13, and 11, which engage the periphery of the cams. A. crank-lever and a pair of cams are omitted in Fig. 1 for the sake of clearness. Connecting rods 15 and 1G attached to the arms 7 and 10 of the crank-levers carry at one extremity, opposite to the rolls, a connecting link 17 ol segment form, in which a slide block 1S is fitted. B v means of an axle 31, passing through the block 18 the drawing rods 15, 1G are connected with one arm of a hell-crank lever 32, whose other arm engages in the drawing rod 33. Several of these drawing rods are provided, o1 which only one is shown on the drawing. The drawing rods are guided in a straight line and engage in the shuttle guide holder bar Bil. 35 designates the shuttles and 36 the shuttle slide tracks. The needles are impelled from the bell-crank lever 32 in a well-known manner.
Above the bell-erank levers 7, 8 and 9, 10 an axle 19 is secured to the frame 2 of the embroidering machine, about which axle a lever 20 is mounted to rock. A rod 21 composed oi two parts is pivoted by one end to the lever 2O and by the other end to the connecting rod 15. Those ends o1 the parts of rod 21 which are turned toward each other are provided with rightand lefthanded threads and connected to each other by a nut 22 provided with corresponding threads. By this means the length of rod 2l can be adjusted. The connecting link 17 may be secured at any desired level by securing the lever 2O in a distinct position. For this purpose a bolt 23 is guided in openings provided in projections oi the lever 20. The bolt is pressed by a spring 21 into the recesses of a toothed segment In order to release the lever 20 the bolt may be drawn back by means of the handle 2.1l in which position it can be secured by a projection 20b of the lever. A toothed wheel 26 mounted on the driving' shaft 1 meshes with a toothed wheel 2Gn of larger diameter mounted on the shaft 27. The latter shaft carries a disk 28. An arm 29 mounted to rock about the axle 19 carries a roller 29 which projects into the lateral cam groove 28FL of the disk 2S. The arm 2S) can be connected to the lever 2O by moving a slide 80 attached to the arm 29 into a forked projection 20 of the lever 20.
By revolving the driving shaft 1 the connecting rods 15, 1G and the connecting link 17 are reciproeated by the cams 3, il. 5 and 6. If the connecting link is in the posi tion shown in full lines 1n Fig. 1 back-stitch is produced, While if the connecting link is raised intoY the position shown indottedY lines running stitch is produced. The change may be performed either by hand or automatically. In the iirst case the lever 20 and the arm 29 are disconnected Whereaft-er the lever 20 and the connecting link 17 may be secured in the desired position by means of the bolt 23 and the toothed segment 25. If however the change is to be perfor-med automatically the bolt 2 3 is released from the toothed segment 25 but the lever 2O Ais connected to the arm 29 by means of the slide 30. The shaft 27 is then revolved from the driving shaft by means of the toothed Wheels, 'whereby the arm 29, lever 2O4 and vconnecting link 17 Yare vertically reciprocated. Any desired ratio of gearing of the shafts 1 and I27 may be vselected bv correi spondingly selecting the toothed Wheels. y If ,for instance the shaft 27 performs one revolution during three revolutions of shaft 1, there are alwaysprod'uced tivo back-stitches and thereafter one running stitch. By changing the ratio of gearingthe ratio of the stitches may be changed. By lengthening or shortening the rod 21 the degree of the stitch can be changed and any variety between the tvvo extremes may be obtained.

Ina mechanism for in'ipelling theI shuttles and needles of embroidering machines, the combination with a stitching mechanism, of a driving shaft, tivo cams thereon, a bell-cranklever, a slotted member, means connecting the bell-crank lever to the latter and a slide in the slot connected to the stitching ymechanism, `the bell-crank lever Y being positively rocked by said cams so that the motion in one directionis produced by the action of one of the cams on one arm of the bell-crank lever and the motion `in the opposite direction bythe action of the second cam on the second arm of the bellcrank lever.
