' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,005, dated December 25, 1888.

To a ur7L0712 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT SCOTT, acitizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a double-stitch sewing-machine with an attachment whereby it is rendered available for the production of an improved trimming for fabrics of the general character forming the subject of J. D. Morleys application for Patent bearing even date herewith, Serial No. 283,611, and of the special character set forth in my application, likewise bearing even date herewith, Serial No. 283,627. in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l. is a side view of a sewingmachine with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is an end view of the attachment. I ig. is a plan view of the same; and Figs. 1, 5, and (i are diagrai'ns illustrating the operation of parts of the machine.
My invention canbe applied to any sewingmachine having stitch-forming mechanism adapted to form two parallel rows of stitches some distance apart. adapted to a suitable bearing on the bed of the machine and carrying an arm, n, which terminates close to the needle 00 of the machine and has an opening serving as a guide for a thread; or, it may have more than one opening, so as to guide more than one thread, if desired. The face-cam acts upon one arm of a bell-crank lever, F, the other arm of which is connected to a slide, G, guided in a suitable bearing on the frame A, and forked at the outer end for connection to a pair of levers, I I, which are located in advance of the needles and are hung to a suitable pro jection on the head of the machine, one fork of the slide being connected to the lever I between the fulcrum of the same and the lower end, while the other fork of the slide is connected to the lever I at a point beyond the fulcrum of the same, the consequence being that as the slide G is reciprocated in either direction movement in opposite directions will be imparted to the two levers I I, which are provided at their lower ends with openings serving as thread-guides.
The face-cam i is so formed that the levers- I I will be moved from the position shown in Figs. 1 and l, where the ends of the levers are outside the line of the needles x, to the position shown in 5, where the ends of the levers are inside said line, and then to the position shown in Fig. 6, where the ends of the levers are outside the line of the needles, but are in a position the reverse of that shown in Figs. and I, the next movement of the levers being back again to the position shown in Fig. 5, and then again to the position shown in Figs. 1 and -I..

y l l the formation of but two stitches, but occupy the intermediate position for a much longer time, so that after a cross-thread is bound into each of the parallel rows of stitches a number of stitches will be formed by the sewing mechanism before the cross-threads are again bound in by the same, so that said threads are laid at'an angle from one row of stitches to the other and cross each other in their passage.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to seeure hy Letters latent- 1.
