lei-britt WILLIAM BETTS, 0F NO. 1 W HARF ROAD, CITY ROAD, ENGLAND.
Letters Patent N 107,320,1latcd S'cplembcr 13, 1870.
IMPROVEMEI'IT IN MACFXNEB FOR ELBOSSING- CAPSULES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same I, Willman Bn'r'rs, ol" No. 1 Wharf Road, City Road, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, capsule mamitacturcr, have invented Improvement in Machines for Embossing Capsules, ot' which the following is a specification. i
My invention relates to machines for embossing, in intaglio or reliei, soft-metal capsules, such as are generally used for covering the 1tops of bottles; and
My invention consists of two inclined shafts, 'carrying conical dies at the. outer ends, and geared together and arranged, as fully described hereafter, so that the blank capsules can be readily adjusted on the die, quickly embossed, and easily detached; and, in order that my said invention may be fully malerstood, I. shall now proceed more particularly to dcseribe the same, and, for that purpose, shall rci'cr to the several figures on the annexed sheets of drawing, the same letters of reference imli .atin r covwsponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l (sheet l) of the drawing represents a side elevation of my machine, which I have found lo answer well, in practice, for embossing the. sides Figure 3 (sheet No. 3) is an elevation of the front or driving-emi of the machine, showing the capsule,- mandrcl and rot-atory die; and
Figure 4 (sheet No. 4) is a similar view ol`-the opposite end ot' the machine'.
A is abuse-plate, intended to be screwed or otherwise secured to a table or other convenient support.
G are two brackets, which carry the bearings for the reception ofA the spindles l) and ll.
The bracket B, which contains the l'ront bearing F ot' thc spindle D, isby preference, for the convenience ol' construction, bolted, as shown in fig. l, to a smaller inclined bracket, B', cast, like the bracket C, on the hase A.
"lfheti'ont bearing oi the nppcrspindlc is upon a stirrup, which is supported by springs, resting in turn spou, brackets, secured to any stationary part ol' the machinc,so that the bearing may yield, when .subjected to downward pressure, for the purpose herenader described, the iront end of' the upper spindle working in a vertical slot on the top of' the bracket lli, to allow pf such movcinent ot` the bearing Il'.
'ifhe two bearings, K and L, l'or the rear ends ol' the spindles .i3 and lrespectivcly, are both 'carried inthe upright bracket -ll 'life the front en d of the spindle E is fitted a conical rotatory metal mandrel, M, of the same taper as the capsule to bc embossed, and composed ot'a metal sulciently soft, say tin, to receive the impression 'rom the engraved surface ot the rotatory die N, having the design engraved thereon in relief.
This rotatory die N is to be of the same taper as the mandrel, and is secured onto the front end of the spindle D, which is more or less inclined, iu orderlo'- insure a perfect contact or parallelism throughout the entire length of the two contiguoussurace et' the die and mandrel respectively, as will he clearly understood on referring to fig. 1 ot' my drawin".
In order to vary the angle oi' the axis of the die and mandrel to snit capsules of different taper,.which variation is very slight, I. raise or lower the rear bearing L oi' the capsule-spindle E,'by means ot' the adjnstihg-scrcws (l, and move the two spur-wheels 1' l, which gen1' the two spindles together 'along their respective spindles, in order to insure their continuing to gear together. p
When it is desired to employ dies and mandrcls el' larger or smaller diameter', then both the front and real' bearings ofthe spindle E' are 'to be raised or lowered togethe accordingly by adjusting-scrmv's for the purpose, the wheels l l being shifted along their respective spindles, to insure their proper gearing together.
Both the mandrel M and rotatory or rolling die N are removable, in order to admtot' diticrcntsizes ami shapes ot' mandrcls and dies being employed on the same machine.
lhe capsule. to bc operated upon may be placed either upon the mandrel-or upon the die, the design being engraved accordingly.
On the lower end of the inclined spindle l) there is keyed the spur-wheel Q, into which gears a spurwheel, Il, fast on the driving-spimlle S, which works in the bearings l l, and is provided with a winchhandle, U.
V is a horizontal-lever handle, working on a fixed center, \V, and having a curvilinear incline, X, formed upon its shorter end, which incline works between the fixed cross-piece, Y, screwed to the top of the bracket '15, and the top ei' a sliding brass, Z, restingr upon the upper spindle near its front cml.
lly moving the handle Y more or less, it is obvious that the capsule which is te be operated upon may bc subjected to any required degree of pressure betweenthe surface ofthe rotatoryde N and mandrel M, when,
hosscd on the side at the 'rate of from ten to fifteen per minute.
Haring now described and particularly ascertained the nature of my said invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be nsed or carried into ei'- fcct, I would observe, in conclusion, that That I consider to be novel and original, and therefore claim, is
1. The shaft D, its adjustable pinion P, and die N, in combination with the inclined shaft', E, its adjustable pinion l), die M, adjustable bearing and wedge X, all constructed and operating as specified.
2. The shaft E, adjustable at both ends, in combination with the shaft; D and with pinions 1..1, adjustable on both shafts, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name io this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
