Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
Application filed July 8, 1909. Serial No. 506,477.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES G. FnAvnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plain township, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shock- Tiers, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap and economical fodder tier but the invention can be used for tying things or material other than fodder.
The inventionis embodied in the construction herein shown and described and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is side elevation of the device showing a cord secured in the tier member proper.
Fig. 2 is a plain View of the tier member with a fraction of the cord attached thereto. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the coil end of the tier member proper.
The tier member proper comprises a coil portion 4 and a shank portion 5. These portions 4 and 5 are bent out of a single piece of suitable stifl wire. The coil portion consists of about one and a half cycles of wire with an end left standing off at a. tangent as seen at 4* to facilitate the insertion of the cord in tying a bundle. The shank portion 5 is bent to stand at right angles to the coil portion and into the form of an eye, as seen at 5* to afford a convenient device for attaching an end of the cord as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
6 designates the cord.
In tying a bundle the free end of the cord 1s passed "around the bundle and drawn tight. After this it is wrapped one or more times around the shank 5 and then passed in between portions of the coil and drawn tight. The coils pinch the cord and efiectually prevent the cord from slipping loose, and it can only be detached by proper manipulation. The coil members can be furnished to husbandmen in quantities and ordinary twine such as is used as binders added by them in spare moments.
I do not confine myself to the eXact form of the device shown but modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A device for tying shocks or bundles, said device formed of a single piece of wire and comprising, in combination, a coil portion 4 the strand of which terminates at one side of the coil in a tangential portion 4 to described' CHARLES G. FBAVEL.
