Description

K; J. a, HESSE LMAN, WATER OOOLED INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
APPLICATION FILED MAB'. a, 1912.
' Pa,ten tedse t.9,191s.
, To all whom it may concern.
HESsnLMAN,"a' citizen Kim'g'dom [of- Sweden,,re'siding at Stockholm, swedenf have invented new and useful Improve-' ments' in Water-Cooled Internal: Gombusr t1on Engines, I of which the followingis a UNITED-STATES PATENT ormoE.
xnu'r eons-ems rms'snmnu, or srocxnon'm, SWEDEN,
wirhn-qoomn mmimer comnus'rron Enema.
Be it M m a Jae-shim specification.
I This invention relatesto improvementsin water-cooled internal combustion engines.
Experience has proved that'when the wall thickness of'the cylinder of aninternal com-- bustion en'gine. exceeds a certain amount the cooling of the cylinder walls becomes insuificient; The inner parts ofthe cylinder wall which are subjected directly to the heat of combustion attained an essentially higher temperature than the outer parts of the cylindei' wall which are in direct contact with the cooling water. The difference of temwhich .wliensaid difference reaches a certain limit can act ruinously on'the same.
. The object of the present invention is to. provide a cooling arrangement which will render it possible to'increase the wall thickness of the cylinder and thus the-size of the latter while maintaining a' 'sufiicient 'cool- "ing of the inner cylinder surface.
Theinvention consists, briefly, in the procated inside the usual water jacket. of a number of holes or channels fo'rmingpassages for the cooling watera d placed sufficientlynear the inner cylin or surface to 'eifect a suifioient cooling-of the latter. 7
In the accompanying drawing I have shown two embodiments of the invention.
. Figurel shows a longitudinal'section of a motor cylinder and F g. 2 a cross-section on line A.B of Fig.1. Figs. 3 and 4 show a part of another motor cylinder 1n longr .tudinal section and. cross-section on line inder consists of ,aninne'r mantle 1 and an C-D of Fig.8 respectively.
Referr'ng to Figs. 1 and 2, the motor cyl outer ina-ntle2 which form'between them ,a-

mantle 2'.
. I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- An internal combustion engine cylinder water space, and of .a head 3 having a wamantle lhas a-wall thickness-otherwise not permissible and is according to tlie'present 'inve'ntion provided with longitudinal holes I ing water flows into .the head 3 through the 1 usual openings between the chamber thereofand the'water space between the mantles, said openings being not shown in the drawin'g. The holes. or channels 4 which may be made for instance by casting or boring are Patented Sept. 9'. 1913.
iterclia l n'ber The upper part of, the inner located sufliciently. near the inner surface of the mant le 1 tocool the same. V g
Referring'to Figs. 3'and4, thechannels 4:: are formed by grooves provided in the outerside of the, upper reinforced part of the mantle- 1. The ribs between said grooves fit tightlyin the upper end of the outer Though in the forms shown in the drawing only the upper portion. of the inner mantle'w'hich is subjected to the highest pressure are assumed to have a wall thickness which is larger than that allowed in usual water cooled engines and the channels or passages 4 on account thereof are provided only in the said mantle portion,-it
I I is obvious that ifi'necessary the whole manvision in the portlon of the cyllnder wall 10-.
tle wall may have awal-l thickness otherwise not allowed, in which-case the channels or passages, 4 maycxtend along the vwhole length'of the cylinder. l
- Having now described my inventiom'what ters Patent is:
having a water chamber inits head, and
inner and'outer walls forming between them a water jacket, and also having on the outer ness that extends into'the waterjacket and from the inner side'of the outer jacket wall,
.is there separated byan intervening space and further having in said portion of increased thickness and extending throughout the length thereof a series of passages or as my invention, 1 have signedmy' name inranged intermediate of and inmommumca-y; presence; oil? ,twotsnbseribing witnesses. t1on wlth the chamber In the head and the Water jacket between the inner and outer tmq JONAS ELIAS HESSELMM" walls; the said series of passages surro und- Witnesses: ing the interior of the cylinder; Commn ULMAN, I f
In testimony thzitl claim the foregoing. j Anon Pam".
