' Specicaton of Letters Patent.
lPatentedsept,9,1913.
Application filed April 22, 1913.A Serial No. 762,811,
To all whom t may concern: f
Be it known that l, FREDERIGKWVALDNER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Hanson and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Wrench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willv enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful wrench. f
As one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim to provide two members pivotedl together, and provided with angular portions having means including a right and left threaded screw, for cooperating with the angular portion whereby the jaws of the wrench may be moved relative to one an` other.
In practical fields, the details of construction of the improved wrench may necessitate alterations, to which therpatentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved wrench constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2
`is a view showing parts in elevation and parts in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate two members pivoted together as at 3. Said members are formed with correspondingly shaped angular portions 4 comprising the inclined parts 5 and 6, and 7 and 8. Just beyond the inclined parts 5 and 7, the members 1 and 2 terminate in jaws 9 and 10, the opposing faces of which are recessed at 11, whereby a nut or the like may be easily gripped.
In order to move the jaws 9 and 10 toward and from one lanother cross heads 12 and 18 are provided, the ends of which are provided with anti-frictional rollers 14, adapted to engage 'the inner inclined faces of the angular portions A of said members, whereby, when the cross heads are movedto separate, the jaws 9 and 10 will be moved apart. To bring the jaws 9 and 10 together U-shaped straps 15 and 16 arch over the in-4 clined parts 5 and 6, 7 and 8, which straps are pivoted upon the pins 17 on which the rollers/14 are mounted Springs 18 connecting the said straps at 19 laref provided, 4for holdingfthe straps yieldablyjin position, 'Y
thereby allowing'thel straps to conform readily to Vthezshape of the'angular portionl was the cross heads are moved toward orjfrom one another, in order to prevent binding, f. the rollers 14 also constituting means toprevent binding.
cross heads apart4 or f toward each other. This screw device comprises a knurled disk 21, from the opposite iatfaces ofy which the pins 22 and 23 extend in opposite directionsy v A screw device 1s provided for moving the and axially or in alinement. The said pins, are provided with right andleft threads', Y
and are threaded through thecross heads, so that upon moving or rotating the-fdisk 21 in either direction they cross heads 'will be VThe moved toward for from one another'.
threads of the pin 23 are somewhat finer and at a different pitch than those of the pin 22, owing to the fact that when the jaws 9 and 10 are separated, the space between the inclined parts 5 and 7 will be greater than the space between the inclined parts 7 and y8. `In' other words, the cross head 12 should be separated or moved from the cross head 13 together and provided with correspondingly shaped angular portions comprising inclined parts, cross heads interposed between and cooperating with said inclined parts, whereby the members may be separated, U-,shaped straps arching the inclined parts and pivoted tothe cross heads to coperate with the inclined parts to bring the members together, a screw device comprising a disk member disposed between the cross heads and provided with oppositely extending right and left threaded pins threaded into the cross heads, whereby the cross heads may be moved toward and from one another, said members immediately beyond the angular portions terminating in opposing j aws.
2. In combination, two members pivoted together and providedv with correspondingly shaped angular portions comprising inclined parts, cross heads interposed between and by the members maybe separated, U-shaped straps arching the inclinedparts and piv` oted to the cross heads to coperate with they inclined parts to bring the members together,l a kscrew device comprising a disk member disposed .between the cross heads and provided with oppositely extending right and left threaded pins threaded into the crossV heads,l wherebyl the cross heads may be moved toward and fromzone another, said members immediately beyond the angular portions terminating in opposing jaws,
`means for yieldably holding the straps in place', and'. anti-frictional rollers carried by 15 the cross heads to engage the inclined parts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my presence of FREDERICK WALDNER.
