Description
"HENRY n. GALE; or 'EUGENE orrY, OREGON.
Letters Patent No. 107,246, dated September 13, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GALLY-RESTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the :samel To all 11:71am it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY H. GALE, of Eugene City, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Proofgalley Rack; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to anew and useful improve-v` ment in a rack for supporting printers pi'oof-galleys for correction, whereby the galley Vmay be corrected without interfering with the type of .the case or the operations ofthe compositor, and consists in the construction and .arrangement hereinafter described. l
. In the accompanying drawing- A.Figure 1 represents a top or plan vlew of the rack. Figure 2 is a cross-section, looking `to the right from the line .fc :e of iig. 1. v Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
' A represents the frontof the type-case.
B is the galley-rack attached to the case., as` when ready for use;
This rack consists of two end-pieces, C C, of triangular form; two longitudinal rods, D D', by which thel end pieces are connected together; aud the slotted center piece E, which is attached to the longitudinal rod D. The rack is hinged to the front of the type-case by means ofthe rod D and staples driven in the case, or in any other suitable manner, so that it will swing out of the-way beneath .the case when not in use.
The upper limbs of the triangular end `pieces 'C Gv are hooked onto the front of the case, as 'seen at VF,
when the rack is in use. l -The slotted center-piece E hooks onto the case 1n the same manner.
G is a screw, which` is confined in and .made to revolve in the slot in boxes by the thumb-piece H.
I is a clamp-nut, which works on the ,screw backv and forth in the slot as the screw is revolved.
J is a lng which projects np fron each of the end pieces C C, against which the galley rests when it is placed upon the rack. \Vl1en the galley is so placed, the screw is turned, and the clamp H v'is brought down against the other edge, and the galley is thus held fast while correcting the proof. v
This proof-galley rack is easily adjusted to the or'dinary case, and, aftcr using it, is readily displaced and 'swung beneath the case, where it may be held ybyv-,a-
hook entirely out'of the way. y
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire'to secure b'yllctt'ers Patfv ent- The triangular end pieces C C, provided with hooks F, and pivoted at their lower ends, longitudinal rods- Witnesses:
