A'f-urther object of my invention is to produce adevice of the class described particularly adapted for use oncombined typewriting and adding machines.
In the use of billing machines or comblned writing and computing machines inwhich in the course of business a large number of separate and individual accounts or statements are usually prepared, it isoftendesirable to retain a complete unitary record of all the'separate and individual computations, accounts, or transactions prepared upon the machine. For these records,- only the successive amounts are required, the names or writing applying thereto being unnecessary. By the device chine is enabled to make such an independent and unitary list simultaneously with the preparation of the individual or separate accounts.

By mea'nsof the screws 9 there is secured to the upper frontpor-tion of the frame 1, an oblong plate 10 which carries at its extreme lfront end the yoke 11 equipped with a spindle 12 for holding a roll of paper 14.- At the extreme rear end or the plate 10 are mounted two small rollers 15 and 16 for the purpose of transmit ting and guiding the strip of paper 17. intermediate theroll M- and the rear pair of rollers is mounted on theplate 10 a pair of cars 18 provided with a spindle 19 carrying the reel 20. Upon one end of the spindle l9 vis carried the toothed wheel 21 and upon the hub of the spindle 19 adjacent thereto is mounted the rocking lever 92 which, at its forward .end is drawndownward by the coil spring 24% anchored in the plate 10. At its. other end, the lever 22 carries the pawl which is normally forced into engagement with the rack wheel :21 by the spring 26. On a downwardly projecting portion of the lever 22is provided the lug Q7 projecting laterally therefrom. v A stop pin 28' is carried bythe ear .18 and operates upon the end of the pawl to limit the movement of the lever 22 under the infinence'of the spring 24.
To the rear of the reel 20., the small guide roller 29 is pivoted in the ears 18 close to the plate 10. At the point'X. the plate 10 is down-set and bifurcated byan opening 30', within which opening the type. bars 8 oper-' .ate.- At Y. the aperture 30 is widened by an in-set'which provides an aperture through which the type 31 of the letter printing. mechanism operate.
The two branches of the bifurcated portion of the plate 10 are provided at their rear extremities with notches 32 which 'engage pins 34 which are set in the frame 1, which pins taper from each end toward the middle, as illustrated in Fig. 2, so as to 'form positioning means for holding the notched end of the plate 10 at the proper elevation. One of the branche of the biiurcaied plate 10 has a projecting portion 35 which is bent downwardly so as 'to lie Y and below the ribbon 3, passes the link 36 which is guided at its forward endby a pin 37 secured tojthegtrack 3'8 and operating through slOtSQin thelink 86. At its front ,tip, the link 36is provided with a flattened head 40- which abuts against. the projection 27 of the lever 22. At the point Z, the link 36 is bent downward so that it may pass below the guard plate el, and at its rear end, the link 36 is provided with an up turned ear d1. A post 42 is secured to the frame 1 and carries, pivoted at 44- to its upper portion, a lever 4.5 having a downwardly extending arm 46 pivot ed-tothe ear 4-1, an upper arm. l7, and a lower arm 48. A link it) is positioned in the frame and adapted to be reciprocated vertically from the line spacing mechanism.

This paper is supplied in rolls 1% mounted on the spindle 12, and as fed to the machine, passes from said roll rearwardly across the plate 10, over the type 8 of the adding machine but to one side of the opening'Y, over the roll 15, and then backforward under the roll 16, under the ribbon 3., under the roll 29 and on to the reel 20.
I The parts thus described are operated in the following fashion. Sheets for the reception of the individual bills or items are introduced in the well known fashion behind the platen 51 of the paper carriage 52 and between it and the ribbon 3, in which position itniay be printed upon by the type 31 of the letter printing mechanism whichstrikes the ribbon 3 at the printing point through the aperture Y to one slde of the .tally strip 17-.- The number printing type 8 likewise prints upon the individual" sheets through" the ribbon number printing type'strikes upon the low-' but in so doing the ermost pole of the tally strip 17 and forces the uppermost layer of said strip against the under side of the ribbon 3, whereby a reverse impression is, received upon the upper side of said tally strip. Ateach operation of the line spacing mechanism, -the link 49 is reciprocated downwardly. In this movement of the link 49,- the projection contacts with the arm 48 of the lever l5, forcingit "dle 1 9 and winds the tally strip on to the reel. ZQgthus feeding said strip the properdistance for the line sparing of the numbers. As seen through the transparentstrip 1'7, the numbers printed thereon in reverse order appear in their normal order, and as all numbers printed by the adding machine type are printed upon this tally strip in the manner above described, a complete record is retained thereon. of all transactions or. computations made by the machine.
\Vhile the foregoing description and illustration showsmy invention applied to one specific type of billing machine, it is ob} vious that by.changing the structure, it may be applied to other forms of machines, or that other modifications and .changes of structure may be made without. departing from the scope of my invention.
' What I claimn 1. In combination with a billing machine having a platen, separate sets of printing type, and an inked ribbon positioned between said platen and said type and adapted to be struck by type of one of said sets, a tally strip positioned between the other of said sets of type and said ribbon.

a tally strip and means for guiding said tally strip rearwardly over said type and forwardly under said ribbon.
3. In combination with a platen and type,
a continuous tally strip, means. for feeding a portion of said tally strip between said type and said platen and an integral portion 1 of said strip between said first mentioned portion and said platen.
4. A tally roll attachment comprising plate, a supply roll at one end of said plate, a guide roll at the other end of saidplato, and a receiving roll'intermediate said rolls.
5.:In a tally roll attachment, a plate, a supply roll at one end of said plate, a guide roll at the other end of said plate, and feeding mechanism intermediate said rolls.
