ThisY invention relates generally to improvements in typewriting machines, but more'specifically to a billing device employed in connection with and forming a part' of a 5 typewriting machine. v
In billing operations generally, it is desirable to typewrite individual invoices and simultaneously record the typewritten data on a sales journal or book sheet. The book sheet is irst placed around the platenl and then the first invoice and intermediate carbon are placed around the platen in front ofthe book sheet. The account data is then printed simultaneously on the invoice and on the book sheet, and the invoice and carbon are then removed from the machine. The operator then effects a line spacing operation to' the book sheet, another invoice and carbon are then inserted, and the new data is then printed simultaneously on the invoice and on the book sheet. Heretofore, it has been usual. to turn the platen backwardly, together with the record sheet and carbon, to receive the new invoice, and then turn the platen forirst line upon the invoice.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a manually operable means which will separate the pressure feed rolls from the platen for the purpose of initially inserting the book sheet, carbon, and the first invoice, and for subsequently inserting other invoices, and to provide a separate manually operable means which cooperates with the pressure rolls releasing means for effecting a line spacing operation at the completion of a printing operation whereby the book sheet will be line spaced and certain feed pressure with to permit the ready withdrawal of the printed invoice and the ready insertion of y a new invoice, both of said means upon release by the operator being returned automatically to their initial positions after the insertion of the new invoice.

In the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a portion of a Royal typewriting machine, although any other typewriting machine may be employed if desired. v The machine includes a carriage A having end plates 5 and a platen B fixed to shaft 6 which are respectively journaled in said end plates. The carriage includes` on its left side the `usual line spacing means (not shown) which is employed where the usual single line spacing is re uired between separate items on invoices. uch line spacing means may be constructed in accordance with the Hess and Myers Patent 1,427,468, August 29, 1922.
Front pressure rolls 7 which are 1n the form' of sleevesv areloosely fitted on a rod 8 extending parallel with the platen. Obviously one or more rolls may be employed as desired. The rod 8 is supported on the forwardly extending arms 9 of bell-crank levers 10 which are pivoted at their angles as at 1l to the carriage A; The rearwardly extending arms 12 respectively engage in cam grooves 13 which extend transversely of an oscillating or rock shaft 14, and bear against the respective bottom or eccentric surfaces 15 formed by said grooves, as shown in Figure 5. Coil springs 16 are each connected' at one end as at 17 to the forwardly extending arm 9 of the bell crank lever 10, and at its other end to a pin 18 fixed to the carriage A..

tends transversely of the rock shaft 14, and bears against the bottom or eccentric surface 22 formed'by said groove, as shown in Figure 5. A fiat spring 23 is connected at one end to the carriage A and has its free end bearing on the arm 20 to normally and yieldably retain the rear pressure roll 19 in contact with the platen. Upon oscillation of the rock shaft 14 the cam surfaces 22 will swing the lever arms 20 against the tension of tho springs 23 and thereby release or separate the rear roll from the platen.
In order to actuate 'the rock shaft 14, I have pivoted a manually operable lever-24 on a stud screw 25 located in rear of the platen axis and mounted on the right hand end plate 5 of the carriage. This lever is provided with an arcuate rack 26 which el'iIgages a gear 27 xed to the rock shaft 14. hus upon a vforward pull on the lever 24'by the operator,
the rock shaft 14 will be oscillated in a direction to release simultaneously the pressure rolls 7 and 19 from contact with the platen, and upon release of said lever by the operator the springs 16 and 23 will automaticalo ly return all of the parts to their initial positions.
In order to effect a line spacing operation of theplaten and simultaneously release the pressure rolls 7 and 19 from contact with the platen, I have provided the following mechamsm Fixed to the platen shaft 6 is a line spacing ratchet wheel 28, and journaled 011 said shaft is a bell crank lever 29 having arms 30 and 31. A ratchet do or pawl 32 is pivoted as at 33 to the arm 30 or engagement with the ratchet wheel 28, and a spring 34 functions to urge the dog into engagement with said Wheel. A manually operable lever 35 is provided at its pivot end with a laterally extending hub 36 which is journaled on the pivot screw 25. A forwardly extending rock arm 37 is fixed to the hub 36 and a link 38 is pivotally connected at one end as at 39 to the arm 31 of the bell crank lever 29 and at its other end as at 4() to the rock arm 37. Thus, b y pulling the lever 35 forwardly, a line spacingr operation to the laten will be effected. The lever 35 is provi ed with a laterally extending pin 41 which is disposed in rear of the lever 24 and is adapted to engagel the said lever and move the same forwardly when the lever 35 is moved forwardly, thus effecting a line spacing operation and a pressure roll releasing operation. In order to automatically return the pressure roll release lever 24 to its initial position, .a link 42 is pivoted at one end as at 43 to the pressure roll releasing lever 24 and is provided at its other end with an elongated and arcuate slot- 44 through which a guide screw 45 passes, the screw being mounted on the carriage A eccentrically relative to the travel of the pin 41 and functioning to guide the link in its endwise movement upon oscillation of the lever 24. The link 42 is provided With a depending projection or tooth 46 at a point adjacent the pivot 43 of the link but slightly in rear thereof. Thus, during the forwardvmovement of the lever 35, the pin 41 thereof will engage the lever 24 and both levers will be simultaneously moved forwardly vfrom the position shown in Figure 2 ,to the position shown in Figure 4. In Figure 4 position, the pin 41 is located in front of the tooth 46 of the link 42, this position being brought about by reason of the pin 41 moving in an are whose center is the lever pivot 25, and the link 42 having its front end moving in an arc whose center is the lever pivot 25 and having its rear end slidably engaged on the fixed `guide 45. Therefore, when the operator returns the lever 35 to its initial position, the pin 41 will engage the tooth 46 and cause the lever 24 to be positively moved rearwardly until the pin becomes disengaged from the tooth, after which time the springs 16 and 23 will function to return the lever 24 to its initial position.
A table or .support 47 of usual construction is mounted on the carriage Ain rear of the platen B and a separating plate 48 is supported on the carriage and acts as a guide and separating plate for the sales, journal or book sheet.
Rolls 49 are rotatably mounted on a graduated rod 50 which is secured at its ends to the swinging bail arms 51. These rolls are also supported on the rod for independent adjustment therealong. The arms 51 are pivoted as at 52 to the end plates of the carriage A. A coil -spring 53 which is.con-' nected at one end to each bail arm 51 and at its other end to the end plate of the carriage, functions to yieldably retain the rolls 49 against the platen B. These rolls 49 are the means for holding the journal or book sheet in position when the other two sets of feed rolls 7 and 19 are released for the insertion and removal of the invoices, thus retaining the book sheet in the line space position where the last entry was made subsequent to the rotation of the platen and feed rolls preparatory to removing the invoice.
In operation, the lever 24 is first moved forwardly to release the pressure rolls 7 and 19 from the platen. A journal or book sheet C is then inserted around the platen between the platen, and the separating plate 48 and pressure rolls 7 and 19.
' An invoice or bill head E and carbon sheet D are then inserted between the separating plate 48 and the table or support 47 and between the sheets C and D and the pressure rolls 7 and 19. The lever 24 is then released by the operator and this lever and the pressure rolls then return to their initial positions. The desired entries are then printed on the invoice and on the record or book sheet. The lever 35 is then pulled forwardly to effect simultaneously a line spacing operation to the book sheet and a release of the pressure rolls 7 and v19. hThe printed invoice is then removed, a new invoice is inserted, and the lever 35 is returned to its initial position, the return movement of the lever also returnin the lever 24 as previously explained. T is operation is repeated as often as desired, and, as a result of the line spacing operation after each invoice is` completed, the entries onl the book sheet are.

I claim: In a typewriting machine, the combination with a carriage, of a platen journaled thereon, releasable pressure rolls cooperating therewith, means for releasing said pressure rolls including a manually operable lever fulcrumed on the carriage, a line spacing mechanism for the platen including a. manually operable lever fulcrumed on the carriage, both of said levers being fulcrumed on a common axis in rearoi'` the platen axis, a pin lixed to the line spacing lever and projectlng in rear of the roll releasing lever for engaging and actuating the latter upon movement of the line spacing lever, a guide pin fixed to the carriage and located eccentrically relative to the travel of the pin, a link pivoted at one end to the roll releasing lever and having a sliding pivotal connection at its other endv with said guide pin, and a tooth projecting downwardly from the link and movable in an eccentric path relative to the pivot of the levers and adapted to be positioned in rear of the pin when the levers are in operative position, whereby when the line spacing lever is returned to its initial position the pin. will engage the tooth and move the roll releasing lever towards its initial p osition.
