INVENTOH Jaco 6 fi. 6'90 ATTORNEY JACOB A. GEYER, 0F MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 3, 1913.
Patented Sept. 2, 1 913.
Serial No. 777,170.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jaoon A. Gni'nn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a SIJCClfiCEtt'iOIl, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail fasteners, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish a tie with novel tie plates that can be easily and quickly placed in position to positively hold rails thereon.
Another object of this invention to provide a tie with rail fastener plates that prevent vertical and lateral displacement of rails and also prevent said rails from unduly wearing or injuring the ties.
A further object of this invention is to furnish a tie with rail fasteners that are simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and highly etlicient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie provided with fasteners in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a plan of one of the fasteners, Fig. t is a perspective view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another of the fasteners.
Further describing the invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a tie of the ordinary and well known construction and arranged upon said tie is a plate 2 that has a reduced central portion providing a neck 3 between the ends of said plate. The ends of the tie plate are adapted to support the base flanges 4; of rails 5 and the ends of said plate are cut and sheared, as at (S and the cut and sheared material bent upwardly to forln outer rail fasteners 7 that are staggeredly arranged, that is, the fastener at one end of the plate is upon one side thereof and the fastener at the opposite end of the plates upon the opposite side thereof. The outer fasteners are adapted to extend over the outer base flanges of the rails 5 and to hold the inner base flanges of said rails, I provide inner fasteners 8. These inner fasteners are stamped and pressed from rectangular plates 5) and said inner fasteners are staggered, as best shown in Fig. 2.
The tie plate 2 and the neck thereof is provided with spike openings 10 to receive spikes U. The rectangular plates 5) have spike openings l2 and these spike openings are adapted to register with spike openings 13 in the tie plate 2 whereby spikes 1-11; can be employed for simultaneously holding the tie plates and the rectangular plates. The tie plate 2 has spike openings 15 positioned whereby spikes .lli driven in said openings will engage the inner edges of the rectalr gular plates 2) and brace said plates.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the inner rail fasteners can be removed without disturbing the outer rail fasteners, consequently rails can be easily and quickly renewed when occasion so demands.
()ne embodinmnt of my invention has been illustrated but it is to be umlerstood that the structural elements are susceptible to such 'ariations and n'lodil'ications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
\Vhat I claim is:---
In a rail fastener, the combination with a tie and rails, of a tie plate arranged upon said tie and having a central. reduced portion providing a neck adapted to be secured to said tie, said plate having the outer ends thereof cut and the out material pressed to provide outer 'lasteners that are staggered and adapted to extend over the outer base flanges of said rails, rectangular plates arranged upon the ends of said tie plate and 7 having stamped portions providing inner are staggered With relation to the outer fasrail fasteners adapted to extend over the teners. 10
' inner base flanges of said rails, and spikes In testimony whereof I affix my signature securing said rectangular plates and said tie in the presence of tWo Witnesses. plate to said tie, some of said spikes being 1 JACOB A. GEYER. arranged to brace the inner edges of said Witnesses:
rectangular tie plates and said plates ar- JOSEPH DEUTSGH,
ranged whereby the inner fasteners thereof MAX H. SRoLovITz.
