ln the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the body portion of the iron, which is preferably formed of a copper casting. The upper end of this body portion is 'formed open and is normally elosed by a t'op plate G, preferably formed ot' cast iron. At its upper end the body portion 5 is provided with relatively large openings 5, through which pass the tproduets of combustion from a burner to be described. If necessary, a packing ring 26 may be interposed between the flange 23 and the wall at the bottom of the aperture in the` boss 24. The depending portion 22 has free communication with the central longitudinal passage 12 and hence with all of the passages 13, through the medium of a port or opening 27.
Mounted within t-he 'lower portion of the body portion below the boiler or steam generator 18 is an open tubular burner 28 preferably of'- the shape shown. This open tubular burner 28 receives therethrough the depending portion 22 of the steam supply pipe. This generator' is adapted to use gas as a fuel, either natural or artificial "gas or other fuel. The outer end29 of the burner 28 extends through an openingin the end wall of the body portion 5 and is connected wit-l1 a4 fuel supply pipe (not shown) through the medium of a coupling 30. As more clearly'shown in Figsf2 and 3, the burner 28 (which is in the form of a pipe) is'provided with openings or perforations 31, 32,33, 34, 35, and 36, as shown. These openings are preferably made 1/16th of an inch in diameter. The openings 34 Yand 3 5; are preferably arranged at an angle of 45 with relation to the plate 11 and the opening 36' is perpendicular with relation p' .ii-hereto. The function in this angular arrangement of the openings 34, 35 and 36 is to direct the llame so that the same will, properly fimpinge against the plate 11 to heat the'samef The opening 33 is disposed at anQ-anigleof 45 to the horizontal, the openinglis perpendicular to the horizon-k" tal. and'theopening 32.-is disposed' at an" angle'of '609,110 the'horizontal. I have found by this angular arrangement of the openings 31, 32 and33, that the flame passing therethrough will impinge against 0r heat the lower` turns 20 of the boiler 18 in a most Ivefiicient manner.
. The operation of the iron is as follows: The water is continuously supplied to t-he lower turns 20- of the boiler 18 from the hose or pipe v(no'tshown). This hose or pipe is provided with a check valve -for preventingthe back ow of the water'- or steam.

prior to its pasagc through' the depending portion 22. This steam n ow passes through the depending portion 22 and discharges into the passages 12 and 13. In these passages the steam is further heated or superheated, while the same is discharging through the outlet ports 16. The object in providing the plate 11 with the passages 12 and 13 instead of' having an integral open space or chamber formed therein, is to lessen the heating area which is engaged by the steam therein. It is obvious that the gas burner will provide flames which extend upwardly and downwardly at the. proper angles to efficiently heat the boiler 18 and the plate 11.
It is tobe understood that the form ofy my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be re-v sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
