TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2,1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP STERN, a citizen of the United States of America, resid- State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a type bar slotted se ment in which the type bars are pivoted.
in the accompanying. drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation: F ig. 2, a central transverse section: and Fig. 3, a similar section showing, however, an ordinary type bar guide adjacent the printing point and a type bar in printing position.
The segment 1 is cut with slots 2, for the reception of the pivot ends of the type bars 3 all pivoted u on a common pivotrod or wire 4 inserte in a segmentally curved aperture or seat 5 formed in the segment. In the present construction, however, the
First, a slot 7 of uniform depth is cut, preferably in the curved lower or peripheral face tion of the pivot wire 4 has a greater diameter or widt 1 than the slot 7 and is cut by a headof greater diameter than the wi th of. the slot and a shank of such thickness as to freely pass Fig, 2 shows the pivot wire seat or groove as square in cross section and. in Fig. 3 it is indicated as round. To the segment is applied the usual vertically disposed type ba'r guide 8 below which is a segmental abutet erjhan the seat extending :disposed in said seat across t ment 9 against which the bodies of the type bars strike to prevent too deep an impression of their type faces into the paper being printed on. The segment so formed with the "pivot wire groove may, of course, be made of a single piece or casting.
I claim:
1. An integral type bar segment having a radial web and a thickened rim formed with radial slots for type bar bearings, a segmental seat extending through the slotted part and a slot of less width than said scat extending therefrom to the exterior of the rim, a single pivot rod disposed in said seat and extending across all the slots and, therefore, locked positively against lateral strains in all directions and type bars occupying the slots and turnin about said rod.
2. An integral type bar segment having a rim enlarged in a forward direction and formed with radial slots open on three sides but closed at the back, a segmental pivot rod seat extending through the slotted part of said Tim and a segmcntalslot of less diamthe exterior of the rim, a sin le pivot rod he slots and, therefore, locked positively against lateral strains in all directions and type bars pivoted in the slots on said rod.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
PHILIP STERN.
