It consists in an extension-staff, provided with socket cap for a candle or lamp, and with adjustable arms witlnsprings attached thereto for holding the sheet or sheets, arranged and operating as hereinafter more fully described.

The accompanying drawing represents my improvedmusic stand as ready for use.

A is the staif, which may be madeof either wood or metal, with one or more joints, either screw-joints, as seen at B, or telescope or sliding joints, and with either a spike O, at the lower end for allowing the staff to be struck into the floor or ground, or between the bricks or stones of a pavement, or with three or more legs, by means of which it may be supported as may be found most convenient or desirable.

I) is the socket cap, which fits onto or is attached tothc top of the staff in any suitable manner.

E is a socket. for supporting arcandle or-small lamp.

F F are ears, forming a part of or attached to the socket cap D.

G: isja pin or wrist, which supports the clasp H.

I and J are arms of uniform length, which are pivoted to the clasp, as seen at K, so that, they may be brought together or spread apart, as may be desired, for holdlng'the sheet, or for packing away.

By virtue of the wrist G, .the arms may be raised or lowered as may be necessary for properly adjusting the sheet, book, or paper.

L represents aspring on the lower end of each of the arms, for holding the sheet or sheets in place.

The joint or joints in the stalf allows the stand to beso reduced in length as to be packed in the instrument-box, and also to accommodate the performer when he is in a sitting position.

The cap turns readily on the top of the staff, so

that the arms and sheet or paper thereon may be ad-- justed laterally as well as vertically, without moving the staff.

The advantages of this mode of constructing portable stands for. musical performers and other purposes must be obvious to all.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The extension or sectional staff A, socket cap D, candle socket E, and adjustable arms I J', arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
