FILING APPLIAN To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. Hiclga citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a filing appliance adapted for the filing of papers, sales slips, bills, memoranda and the like in classified order.
For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of filing appli-. ance embodying my invention.
Figure 1 is a front View of a filing appliance, embodying my invention, the front doors of the casing being shown open Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the near side of the casing being removed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the key control mechanism. Fig. 4 is a front view of the parts shown in 3, a portion of the front plate being broken away and a part of a paper holding case or section, which contains a series of paperholding leaves shown. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on {the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 with .one of the lock and release members shown i in operative position and a device ofpa bill holding section seedy to engage therewith. If now it is desired to bring a particular bill holding section into operative position for manipulation, the following operations take place: The key 12 corresponding to that section is pressed inwardly. This operation slides the frame 10 rearwardly which in turn closes the switch. The motor now op-' crates and drives the chains 4. The inward sliding of the key 12 moves the notch 12 formed therein into register with the adjacent lock and release member 13. As soon as the notch 12* and member 13 register with each other, the. latter, acting under the influence of the spring 13, quicklyswings into the notch 12, looks the key 12 against rearward movement (see Fi s. 6 and 7) and moves the arm 13 carried by upward into the path of the trip 14 carried by the device 7 which is to be arrested at the operative position. As the key. The latter, being released, returns to normal position under the influence of the spring 12 and permits the frame 10* to return to its first position. invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely" illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
What I claim is:-
1. In. a filing appliance, the combination of a support, a series of filing sections, a mechanism for supporting and moving said filing sections through an endless path, a motor for driving said mechanism, a series of keys, a normally open switch common to said keys and operated thereby for controlling said motor, and a spring actuated device normally arranged in the path of movement of one of said filing sections and arranged to be operated thereby to stop the section at a prearranged position, each of said devices being held in in-operative position by an adjacent key, but being released thereb when said key-is 0 rated.

series of keys, one for each of said sections, for controlling the starting and stopping of said mechanism, a switch common to said keys and arranged to be closed thereby, a series of spring actuated release devices one for each of said filing sections and normally arranged in the path thereof, each key operating to hold an adjacent release device in in-operative position but permitting it .to move into operative position when the key is operated to close the switch, anda' stop or shoulder on each key arranged to be engaged by the adjacent release device for holding the key in operated position untilthe release device is engaged by its ,corresponding filing section. '4. series of spring actuated release devices one for each of said filing sections, and normally arranged in the path thereof, each key operating to hold an adjacent release device in in-operative position when the key is operated to close the switch, a stop or shoulder on each key arranged to-be .en-
gaged by the adjacent release device for holding the key in operated position until the releasedevice is engaged by its corresponding filing section, and means for returning the key to normal position when the release device is operated.
5. In a filing appliance, a series of filing sections each comprising a plurality of holders arranged to swing relative toeach other, mechanism for S11 porting and moving said sections through an endless path, a motor for operating said mechanism, a
series of keys, one for eachof said sections, for controlling the starting and stopping of said mechanism, whereby each of said filing sections can 'be brought to a predetermined position of rest, a normally open switch common to said keys and arranged to be closed thereby, a pair of cooperating elements for each filing section for controlling the opening of the switch, one element of a pair being carried by each filing section and the other element of a pair bein swingably supported adjacent to one of sai keys, each of the last mentioned elements being normally arranged-in the path of movement of its cooperating'element carried by a filing section and arranged to lock the adjacent key in operated position to close the switch,
.but operating when engaged by its coop! crating element to release the key and permit; the opening of the switch.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a leaf or frame holding section, mechanism 'for supporting and moving said section to and from an operative position, a motor for driving or moving the said mechanism, .a key and switch mechanism operated thereby for controlling the motor, a shoulder on said key, a swingable lock and release device engaging said shoulder for, locking the key in operated position and releasing it therefrom, and Ia trip carried by the saidsection for swinging the lock and release device to release the key. i

The combination of a series ofrframe holdingsections, mechanism for supporting and moving said sections to and from a predetermined position, a motor for operating said mechanism, a series of keys, one for each of said sections, for controlling the starting and stopping of said mechanism, whereby each section can be arrested at the predetermined position, a normally open switch common to said keys and arranged to be closed'thereby, a pair of cooperating elements for eachsection arranged to con- .trol the operation of one of said keys, one element of a pair being carried by a frame holding section and the other elementcof-a pair being swingably supported adjacent to one of said keys, each of said last mentionedelements beingnormally arranged in the path of its cooperating element carried by the frame holding section and arranged to lock the adjacent key .in operated position, but operating when engaged by its cooperating element to release the key and permit the opening of the switch, the elements of the pairs of cooperating elements carried by: the frame holding sections being movable to an inoperative position. 8. In a filing appliance, the comblnation of a casing provided with an opening, a
series ofjfiling devices, endless mechanism to lock the key in operated position and operating through the key and said sliding frame to maintain the switch in closed position, the said lock being held out of locking relation with the adjacent key when the latter is in inoperative position but being released by the movement of the key to close the switch and a device carried by each filing device and cooperating with one of the 'Sflld locks to release it after it has locked the adjacent key.

In a filing appliance, the combination of a casing provided with' an opening, a series of filing devices, endless mechanism for supporting and moving said filing devices relative to said openlng, a motor in gear with said endless mechanism for moving it, a switch, connections between said motor and switch, a spring for normally maintaining said switch open, a series of keys one for each filing device and each adapted to close the said switch when operated, a spring operated lock for each key provided with an extension,, and arranged to lock the adjacent key after it is operated to close the switch, each lock being held out of locking position by the adjacent key when it is in normal position but being released by the movement of the key to close 7 of a casing,
the switch, and devices, one carried by each filing device, the said devices being ofl -set relative to each other, and the said extensions of the locks being off-set relative to eachother and each arranged in the path of one of said devices, whereby theadjacent lock is automatically released by the latter.

In a filing appliance, the combination" a series of filing devices, each arranged to be stopped at a predetermined position, endless mechanism for supporting and moving said filing devices, an electric motor in gear with said endless mechanism for moving it, a switch, connections between said motor and switch, a sliding frame for opening and closing said switch, a spring for normally maintaining'said switch open, a series of keys one for each filing device and each adapted to operate said frame, a spring operated lock for each key provided -w1th an extension and arranged to engage the adjacent key for looking it in actuated sitionafter the release of the adjacent lock.-

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a leaf or frame holding section, mechanism for supporting and moving the said section to and from an operative position, a motor for driving or moving the said mechanism, a key and mechanism operatedv thereby for controlling the motor, an automatically operating device for locking the key, including an extended arm, and a trip device engaging said arm for releasing the lock device.
