To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Emi. Fnuns, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and- State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Safety Mechanism for Breakdown Guns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a particularly sim le and eilicient safety mechanism for break own guns; and
it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed. In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views. Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a gun equipped with my safety mechanism. Fig. 2 is a. plan of a portion of the trigger plate and contiguous parts.

10 is the thumb lever ofthe means for locking the barrels and frame together and normally preventing the brealng of the gun. The locking means also includes the usual catch which coperates with a rearwardly extending lug 12 onthe barrel, and also a sliding bolt 13 movable in a horizontal guide extending lengthwise of the frame and 'into and out of anotch or recess 14 formed in the depending barrel lug 15. The catch 20, as here shown, comprises a central body and a flange at the lower end of the body, the body being formed 'with a central recess 24 opening through its lower end face, and in which the spring 22 extends, and the liange 25 isannular in form and a portion thereof projects into the path of the arrel lug 15. Said flange 25 also engages contiguous parts ofthe frame t limit the movement of the catch20. The lowerl end of the spring 22 bears againstthe removablevtrlgger plate 26 and the catch is arran d so that it is .removable upon the detaching of the trigger plate. Y
The locking means shifts the safety mechanism of the gun into position to prevent the operation of the tiring mechanisms, and as here illustrated the safety mechanism Vin-V -cludes a longitudinally movable member 27 arranged between the tiring mechanism and having laterally extending shoulders28 normall engaging upwardly-facing surfaces 29 on t e'trlggers for preventing the operation of' the triggers, the member 27 having its front end arranged in the path of the bolt 13 and itsrear end engaged by a slide 30 arranged on the u per tang 31 of the frame. The rear arm 37 of the saety member 27 is engaged by a fork 38 engaged with front and rear faces of said arm 37 and rovided on the slide or fingerpiece 30, and) consequently when the lingerpiece 30 is moved forwardl the fork 38 and the arm 37 move the sa ety member 27 forwardly to carry the shoulders 28 out of engagement with the upwardly facing surfaces 29 of the triggers and into alinement with the cutouts or slots 39 in the triggers, and thereby release said triggersfrom the safety member. Obviously, when the n is broken the triggers will be automatically locked from movement.
The trigger-plate is detachably connected to the frame at 40 as by the screw 41 so that when the plate is detachedthe triggers and safety member will be removed therewith and the arms 36, 37 of the member 27 disengage themselves from their coacting parts 13 and 38 during the removal of the trigger plate.
The hammers and cocking members shown herein form the subject matter of my application, Sr. No. 528,855, filed November 19, 1909, and this application is a division of said application.
What I claim is:
1. In a break-down gun, the combination with aframe including a detachable trigger-plate, a barrel hinged to the frame, liring mechanism supported by the frame and including a trigger pivoted to the triggerplate, and locking means for normally holding the frame and the barrel from relative movement; of safety mechanism comprising a longitudinally movable member having its front end supported on the pivot for the trigger, and formed with a lengthwise slot for receiving said pivot, and having its rear end slidably supported by the trigger-plate at the rear of said pivot, the front end of the longitudinally movable member detachably coacting with the locking means, and a mov-` able hand-piece carried by the frame and detachably coacting with the rear end of the longitudinally movable member, said member being detachable from the locking means and the hand-piece by the detaching movement of the trigger-plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a break-down gun, the combination with a frame including a detachable trigger-plate, a barrel hinged to the frame, Eiring mechanism supported b the frame and Iincludin a trigger pivote to the triggerplate, a ug rising from the trigger-plate at the rear of the pivot for the trigger and provided with an engaging pin, and locking means for normally holding' the frame and the barrel from relative movement; of
safety mechanism comprising a longitudifl nally movable member having its front and rear ends supported respectively on the pivot for the trigger and on the engaging pin of the lug, and formed with lengthwise with a frame including a detachable tri gerplate, a barrel hinged to the frame, ring mechanism supported by the frame and including a trigger pivoted to the triggerplate, and locking means for normally holding the frame and the barrel frqm relative movement; of safety mechanism comprising a longitudinally movable member having its front and rear ends terminating in upturned arms, the front arm detachably coacting with the locking means, the front end of the portion of the member between said arms being supported on the pivot for the trigger and formed with a lengthwise slot for receiving said pivot, and the rear end of said portion being slidably supported by the trigger-plate at the rear of said pivot, and a movable hand-piece carried by the frame and detachably coacting with the. rear arm of the longitudinally movable member, said member being detachable from the locking means and the hand-piece by the detaching movement of the trigger-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a break-down gun, the combination with a frame including a detachable trigger-plate, tWo pairs of lugs rising from the trigger-plate and spaced apart in a direction lengthwise thereof, the lug of each pair being united by a pin, barrel hinged to the frame, iring mechanism supported by the frame and including a trigger pivoted on the pin uniting the front pair of lugs, and locking means for normally holding the frame and the barrel from relative movement; of safety mechanism comprising a longitudinally movable member having its front end supported on the pivot pin for the trigger and formed with a lengthwise `slot for receiving said pivot pin, and having its rear end slidably supported on the pin uniting the rear pair of lugs, the front end of the longitudinally movable member detach-4 ably coacting with the locking means, and a movable hand-piece carried by the frame .and detachably coacting with the rear end of the longitudinally movable member, said member' being detachable from the locking means and the hand-piece by the detaching pivoted on said pin, and locking means for A normally holding the frame and the barrel from relative movement; of safety mechanism comprising a longitudinally movable member having its front end supported on said pin between the triggers and formed with a lengthwise slot for receiving the pin, and having its rear end slidably supported by the trigger-plate at the rear of said pivot, the front end of the longitudinally movable member detachably coacting with the locking means, and a movable hand-piece carried by the frame and detachably coacting with the rear end of the longitudinally movable member, said member being detachable from the locking means and the hand-piece by the detaching movement of the triggerplate, substantially as and yfor the purpose specified.
6. In a break-down gun, the combination with a frame including a detachable triggerplate, two pairs of lugs rising from the trigger-plate and spaced apart in a direction lengthwise thereof, the lugs of each pair being united by a pin, a barrel hinged to the frame, rin mechanism supported by the frame and lncluding two triggers pivoted on the pin uniting the front pair of lugs, and locking means for normally holding the ,frame and the barrel from relative movement; of safety mechanism comprising a longitudinally movable member having its front and rear ends terminating in upturned arms, the front arm detachably coacting with the locking means, the `front end of the portion of the member between said arms being arranged between the triggers and supported on the pivot pin therefor, and being formed with a lengthwise s lot for receiving said pivot pin, andthe rear end of said portion of the lon itudinally movable member being guided etween the rear lugs and provided with a lengthwise slot for receiving the pinconnecting said lugs, and a movable hand-piece carried by the frame and detachably coacting with the rear arm of the longitudinally movable member, said member'being detachable from the locking means and the hand-piece by the detaching movement 'of the trigger-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a break-down gun, the combination with a frame includin a detachable triggerplate, a barrel hinge to the frame, firing mechanism supported by the frame and including 'a trigger pivoted to the triggerlate, and locking mea-ns for normally hold.
lng the frame and the barrel from relative movement, the locking means including a forwardly and rearwardly movable bolt supported by the frame above the axis for the trigger; of safety mechanism comprising a longitudinally movable member having its front end terminatingin an upturned arm detachably engaging the rear end of said l bolt, said member being slidably supported on the pivot for the trigger in proximity to the base of said arm and having its rear end slidably supported by the trigger-plate at the rear of said pivot, and a movable hand-piece carried by the frame and detachably coacting with the rear end of the longitudinally movable member, said member being detachable from the locking means and the hand-piece by the detaching movement of the trigger-plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
